Pow: The Haybaler Problem

Decent Essays

POW The Haybaler Problem We are trying to find the weight of 5 hay bales. The bales were weighed in pairs. The pairs for the bales are bales 1 and 2, 1 and 3, 1 and 4, 1 and 5, 2 and 3, 2 and 4, and 2 and 5 and so on. The weights are 80, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, and 91 measured in kilograms. What are the individual weights of the bales? Is the answer I found the only possible sets of weights? Explain how you know. So I thought that if you know that there is 5 bales of hay and 10 weights, you should just add 80+82, 83+84, 85+86, 87+88, and 90+91, then divide by two. The reason why you would divide by two is because half of ten is five, and there are ten weights and five bales. But then I figured out that that didn’t work. …show more content…

Bales A+C=82, A+D=83, A+E=86, B+C=84, B+D=85, B+E=88, C+D=87, C+E=91, D+E=91. That is just one way to do the problem. My proof that this is the correct answer is because the numbers for each letter added up, equals the weights as given in the book. There are 10 different ways to this problem. I only could figure out one of the ten different ways to do the problem. The grade I think that I should get is 2/2 points for the problem statement. The reason why I think that is because I gave all the necessary information. For the process I think that I should get 3/3. The reason why is because I told what I was doing. I also gave 3 pieces of evidence that I tried something. I explained why it was the wrong answer and how I did the steps for trying to figure out what the answer is. Then I think that I should get a 3/3 on the solution. The reason why is because I got the right answer, gave proof, and had an equation. I think that I should get a 1/1 because there are no words spelled wrong or any errors. The math that was learned from this is the system of equation. By: Cadence Whitlow 1st
