In Lord of the Flies the boys used fire for many purposes. Ralph use the fire as a way to Signal passing ships in order to be rescued. Jack used fire to cook the meat of the pigs that him and his Hunters would go out and kill. Fire had an exponential growth throughout the story for an indication of power. another dominant indicator of power was the conch. In Lord of the Flies, like the fire, the conch had several uses. An indication of this is in the first chapter when the book says, “Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence” (Golding 22). When ralph held up the conch and they became silent it shows the reader how the conch has influence over the boys. Its first purpose was to send out a signal to all the boys on the island indicating that there will be a meeting. at these meetings the boys would discuss things like rules, jobs, and give updates. Each group of boys would take turns giving updates and in order to speak a boy needed to have the Conch. The shell was used as an indicator to show who could talk without this rule in place all of them would attempt to talk at once, and nothing would get done. Unfortunately the conch had an exponentially decaying indication of power as the boys slowly stopped caring about the conch. The fire becomes the form of power which creates conflict between Jack’s and Ralph’s
There is a famous quote by David Brin which states: “It is said that power corrupts. But actually it’s more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.” This quote means that not everyone can be corrupted, but sometimes, people are too weak to handle the pressure. Additionally, power comes in many forms, but one way that really stands out is when it boils down to influence on other people. Furthermore, in real life and in novels, power often corrupts people and characters. In both the novels Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, power has the ability to bring out the worst qualities in human nature in the antagonists, a concept that can be also be applied.
Dictatorship, is it truly evil or can it be more than that? North Korea has been under a strict rule for many years by over three generations of of leaders. Because of the tight rule citizen have been scared to speak in public and are still scared to this day. Stronger, more powerful humans prey on and dehumanize the weak in order to maintain a higher status. Jack did just this when he came into power on the island. North Korea’s government and Jacks rule from the novel, Lord of the Flies, are very similar in the way that they both are dictatorships, and they control their citizens with fear.

William Golding’s masterful use of symbolism is exemplified in his book Lord of the Flies, in which he uses masks to represent . These masks come in many forms, and by careful study of events throughout Golding’s novel, one discovers their significance. Physical masks are used by many characters such as Jack and Piggy, and they are perhaps the least ambiguous forms found in the book. The idea of a mask encompasses more than just these literal interpretations, however. Metaphorical masks are used in abundance throughout the book, and much can be revealed about the characters based on how or if they chose to wear their masks. The significance of these masks is also tied closely to the theme stating Man’s heart is evil.
“In absence of orders, go find something and kill it” Erwin Rommel world war II 7th panzer division general. It doesn’t seem to have much to do with lord of the flies but it does. When these boys are in left alone they start fighting and pick sides. In the Second World War people picked sides. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey utilizes different motifs to show the hierarchy in power. While the book may have included sexist and racist elements, it does not have an overall theme that is based off it, thus it is not critical towards a specific group. Instead, Kesey made use of those premises to incorporate those ideas into developing the division in power that is held throughout the book.
For the boys in the novel the conch was an empowering movement that made them be civilized for a while. The conch showed leadership to the boys, for example Golding states “’Him with the shell. Ralph! Ralph! Ralph! Let him be chief with the trumpet”’ (Golding 22). This quote is showing the boys saw the shell as an entitling necessity. So far, the boys maintain civilized and try to create rules for themselves as Ralph leads them. As the story progresses, Jack starts to separate from civilization the boys are starting to forget about their main purpose for creating the fire which is to be rescued.
