The power of congress had gone over several things. I thought the major ones were, the expressed powers of money and commerce, the implied powers, and the non legislative powers. The expressed powers of money and commerce is talking about the purpose of having taxes and the limits on the power of them. The implied powers tells us about the war powers and other expressed powers. The last is the Non Legislative powers tell us about the impeachment of the president . The three main points i'll talk about will be the purpose of our taxes, other expressed powers, and impeachment.
The article of confederation had not given the power to tax. “To lay and collect taxes, duties imposts and excises, to pay the debt and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the united states”. The purpose of taxies, is

Chief justice presides over the senate when a president is to be tried.there has been two presidents who have been impeached by the house Andrew Johnson 1868 and Bill Clinton 1998. the senate voted to acquit the two men that is they found them not guilty. Andrew johnson became the nation's 17th president.Soon to become enmeshed in disputes with the radical republicans who controlled the congress.then matters came to a head when congress passed the tenure of office act over the president veto in 1867. Johnson's deliberate violations of law had triggered. His impeachment by the house bent on a political revenge. Bill Clinton was the 42nd president was impeached by the house in 1998.The house voted two articles of impeachment against him on December 19. the article accused him with obstruction of justice because he withheld information about his affair with his intern. Many members of the house who supported the articles of impeachment contended that lying under oath and withholding
A big difference under The Article of Confederation and the Constitution comes in the form of taxes. The Articles of Confederation did not allow the national
When the Founding Fathers resisted these taxes on principle that Parliament did not have the authority to tax the colonists, Britain attacked and minimized colonial self-rule , declared colonists subject to any act of Parliament , reestablished internal taxes , closed colonial ports, dissolved
The Constitution gave sole authority to declare war, as well as raise and support an Army and Navy, to the legislative branch. Furthermore, Congress was granted the power of the purse. Modeled after the British Parliament’s control over the King through the control of money, the framers of the constitution created a separation of powers supported by the philosophy of Locke and Montesquieu, oversight through funding. The frames intent for these powers would enable Congress to balance the authority of the President, the Commander in Chief, and submit him to Congressional approval for the use of force.
In this essay, I will be writing about how the power relationship between the United States Congress and the presidency has changed during the past two hundred years. I will be talking about how the executive branch is more powerful than the legislative branch and how the changing relationship between Congress and the president affected American democracy in a good way.
Another disadvantage of the Articles of Confederation was that it created a flawed financial system. The Congress could not pass taxes; it had to request funding from the states. “The taxes for paying that proportion [government funding and debt],” read the Articles of Confederation, “shall be laid and levied by the authority and direction of the legislatures of the several States…” (Article VIII) The states could
“When it came to levying taxes the Articles stated Congress could request states to pay taxes. The Constitution states Congress has the right to levy taxes on individuals” (Feldmeth, Greg D. "U.S. History Resources" http://home.earthlink.net/~gfeldmeth/USHistory.html (31 March 1998). “A federal court the Articles
The framers of the Constitution did many things to limit the power of the president such as creating a system of checks and balances, establishing a process of impeachment, and requiring congressional approval for many presidential decisions; however some believe the president was given too much power by the framers by allowing executive orders and court packing. Through trying to limit the power of the president, the framers also set requirements to become president. These include being least 35 years old, living in the U.S. for consecutive 14 years, and natural born citizen of the United States of America. The framers of the Constitution did enough to limit the power of the President. This was done by creating a process for impeachment,
The constitution gave the government power to control taxes. Before the constitution was created no state had to pay taxes if they didn't want to. And who wants to pay money if they don't have to? This caused our country to have no money, we were broke. Interest on our debt was stacking up causing our debt to multiply everyday. We were drowning. The constitution helped us by allowing the government to control taxes. And allowing the people to know where the taxes are going. Document 1 shows all the problems with the Articles of Confederation. One of them being the articles gave the government no power to collect
Congress retains a number of special powers. It can act as a judicial body to impeach and try a president or other civil officer for misconduct. For example, the House of Representatives impeaches the official and Senate does a trial. Congress is also empowered to create and use administrative agencies and boards, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to determine facts and to enforce its
The first government was based on a very weak document called the Articles of Confederation. This document established a very weak national government that lacked many of the traits found in the Constitution of the United States. According to the Article the national government was a subordinate to the each of the state governments. The document was intentionally written in this manner because the states were in fear of a large powerful government that they fled in Great Britain and Europe.
In 1789, The Powers of Congress was formed. Congress was given specific powers in the Constitution. It was also denied certain powers as well. The Constitution, grants the national government different kinds of powers and prohibits it from taking certain types of actions.
I feel the system is biased because there are inequalities among the representation and participation of interest groups and constituents in the political system. Unfortunately, poor and uneducated citizens aren’t as organized as interest groups, lobbyists and PACs because they lack the money, resources and connections necessary to influence congress members on legislative bills. It is evident that, “businesses, interest groups and labor unions are spending more than $100 million a month to lobby the federal government”(Associated Press, SFC, 3/7/98). “The actual population of interest groups in Washington surely reflects that there is a class bias in the membership of interest groups”(JBG).
The powers of the Legislative branch meet the American’s needs and concerns in many diverse ways. One way they meet American needs is through the rules regarding taxes. An example of this can be seen in Section 8 of the Constitution, where it states, “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;” (https://docs.google.com/document/d/19AW16JBuIuBv30MsFuoRlfU1fzvFXuMo-N7ZvMSOlpk/edit) Summarized, this means that the Legislative branch has the power to impose taxes on the people of the United States to do things such as, pay off debt, maintain our security, and provide for the general welfare or needs of the people and government. When
The United States: Bicameral Legislature “It is important we have a checks and balances system. A bicameral legislature provides a diversity of membership, leadership, and outlook that can’t be achieved in a unicameral legislature,” (Ari Adler, 2017). The congress is the legislative branch of our government and the most important which is why the framers of the constitution listed it first in the constitution. A great nation has great legislation, and a nation with legislation will strive. The United States should stay with a bicameral legislature because a bicameral congress represents the popular will of the people, prevents tyranny, and simplifies a thoughtful approach to legislation.
Model Congress has been one of my favorite extracurricular activities. This club which I have participated in for four years now has helped shape who I am, introduced me to new people, and given me memories to last a lifetime.
