I can remember how proud I was of my dentist, Dr. Risk, when he spoke to my kindergarten class about keeping up good dental hygiene. We all went into a large classroom and sat criss-cross applesauce on the floor to hear his presentation about brushing our teeth to remove the plaque “bugs.” He also talked about how cavities are formed if we do not remove them properly and consistently. This memory has stuck with me, and I have always wanted to make other people feel the way I felt sitting on that tile floor long ago. He was always very good with making children feel special, easing their fears, and connecting to patients of all ages on a personal level. I always loved going to the dentist as a kid because Dr. Risk always made me feel important. While shadowing in Dr. Bellott’s office, a cute little boy came in for a cleaning, and he wanted to know everything from the process to the tools. My encounter with the little boy reminded me of my own excitement as a child about going to the dentist and how excited I am to be able to work with kids like him.
Competency Assessments are regularly carried out by the laboratory head/supervisor so that they get an idea whether all the employees are competent enough to perform the various laboratory tests/procedures on day to day basis(4). If for instance a particular team member is struggling with some procedure then they may not produce the correct results which will affect patient care, as the patient will receive the wrong set of results, thus it will cost them more money and time for their treatment. Thus, these assessments are ongoing throughout the year, plus QAPs are also done regularly in the laboratory to access the skill, performance of all the team members.

Sam’s father is a fireman who works 24 rotating shifts. Sam gets along with his siblings and his elderly grandparents. Sam dislikes brushing his teeth. A lot of parents often use the trick of nursery rhymes to ensure that their kids are brushing their teeth for a stipulated amount of time. All you have to do is download a nursery rhyme that your toddler prefers and instruct them to brush for as long as the song continues. Once they get into a habit of it, they will naturally follow this routine and you won’t have to watch over them like a hawk. You can even use a different nursery rhyme for each day of the week to make it more enjoyable for your toddler. Or choose a different one for the morning session and the night session (if you manage to find that many!).
You’re really doing it – you’re raising a kid with good morals and manners, spirit and spunk, creativity and imagination. It’s fair that “good dental hygiene” isn’t always your primary focus. Really, it’s okay. Lowitz & Meier are here to help.
One way the dentist can go about preparing them is by patient education. Dentists should begin talking to and planning for the future with patients once they are about 50-60 years old.
