There are lots of potential effects related to discrimination. It includes things like disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity and also marginalisation. I am now going to explain these effects and connect them with a case study.

Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race.

Prejudice is when we have a preconceived opinion about someone or a group of people that is formed without knowledge, or even a real understanding about them.

As defined by an online dictionary source, prejudice is “an unfavourable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.”[1] I consider prejudice to be an unfair pre-judgment of someone or something based solely on appearance or action, without actually knowing true facts and the reasons behind actions.

Most people in today’s society may believe that prejudice and discrimination mean the same thing and most people may not pay attention to the fact that there is a huge difference between the two terms. The main difference between these terms is, prejudice is a negative idea about a certain group of people or people of a particular race. The person usually doesn’t act on the idea, they mainly just keep it to themselves. Most would describe it as being a “pre-judgement”. Discrimination, on the other hand, is far much worse than just being prejudice. Discrimination is prejudice put into action/practice. This involves treating people harmfully and disrespecting them as an individual just because they don’t look like you or because they belong to a specific group of people. There are three different forms of discrimination and they are: Individual Discrimination, Statistical Discrimination, and Institutional Discrimination. Both of these terms falls under the category, racism. Racism is the most talked about thing in the United States today. I completely disagree with the term “racism” as a whole and I completely disagree that it is being taught. Blacks and whites of the United States should always be against racism. Racism is not something that we are born with--it is something that we are taught and honestly society, parents, teachers, and movies play a big role in it. Humanity has overcome an immense amount of hardship. We have overcame wars, diseases, natural disasters and so many more things. The biggest hardship is in the making. It is the hatred that we have for one another that is the fuel for this catastrophe. Many prominent people are speaking on this issue, but it is falling on the ears of deaf people, murder, rape, war crimes, racism are everyday events. Out of all of these, racism is something no one deserves to experience. Racism is basically prejudice and discrimination against the people of a certain race and sadly, it still prevails.

Prejudice and discrimination is an action that treats people unfairly because of their membership in a particular social group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs to rather on that individual. It is an unfair treatment to a person, racial group, and minority. It is an action based on prejudice.

It has been over 500 years since Columbus sailed the ocean blue and yet the vast majority of that time has been filled with the woes, hatred and oppression of the American white man for his darker skinned brethren. If we take as our assumption that such racially motivated injustice can not be justified and should not persist then we must first understand how such an obvious imbalance came to be and what can and should be done to avert it in the future. Throughout this class, Religion, Race, and Discrimination in America, we have learned how racism came about with many different theories. Religion can be defined as, a belief or worship in a higher power, normally a God or Gods. Race can be defined as social grouping or form of peoplehood that is marked by traits that are perceived to be biologically inherited. (Prentiss Introduction, slide 9) With race and religion people or groups of people can justify the discrimination of others because other groups do not share the same beliefs or traits they do. It is usually formed without enough knowledge, and is based on negative stereotypes about a certain group of people. Unfortunately, it often leads to discrimination and sometimes death. People often show prejudice to others by oppressing their rights. A few examples of prejudice are women not being allowed to vote, being denied education, and not being able to drive.
