Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, gave a eulogy for her on September 6, 1997. In the eulogy he speaks of how much Diana meant to the people of not only England, but also the people of the world. Within the speech, the Earl becomes passionate about his sister and the things that she did during her life. One example that he gave was that on her birthday, she did not celebrate the day but instead was the guest of honor at a charity fundraising event. The speaker is Earl Spencer, the brother of the late Princess. The audience is all of the people who are
“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation or reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” This quote shows why Princess Diana was known as a kind-hearted person. She overcame a lot of obstacles, as in the tragedy of her parents, her marriage, and the problems she faced as a Royal Princess.
During that time, Diana's brother, gave a eulogy speech. Similar to the Queens speech, the eulogy also contains pathos throughout his speech. He described Diana as “The very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty.” (Earl Spencer’s Eulogy To Diana) The eulogy clearly described that her title of royalty didn't make her who she was, and that her “magic” will continue on forever. Although, unlike the Queens speech, logos are found throughout the eulogy. Light is shed on all that Diana is, both the good and bad. He used factual evidence such as “Diana remained throughout a very insecure person at heart, almost childlike in her desire to do good for others so she could release herself from deep feelings of unworthiness, of which her eating disorders were merely a symptom.” (Earl Spencer’s Eulogy To Diana) He wanted the public to know that although Diana was an amazing person, she to had problems just like any other average
Princess Diana is considered to be the most favored member of the Royal Family in the history of the British Monarchy (biography.com editors 1). She is the former wife of Prince Charles, and the mother of Princes William and Harry. Her charitable work with impoverished children has formed her reputation as a role model for the people of Britain and much of the world. Much of Diana’s life has been devoted to traveling the world to help others. Her work in Africa with the children injured by landmines brought her into the global spotlight (Wexford 3). When Diana was nine years old her parents were divorced, and her father won custody of the children. Princess Diana was homeschooled for the first few years of her life, and when she reached the age of nine she was enrolled into Riddlesworth Hall, an all girls boarding school. When Diana was twelve, she moved to West Heath Girls’ School where her sisters attended, and later failed her exams and did not graduate with what we call a diploma. Diana did not return to school, instead she began forming her own charities and started working with other charities. Some of the charities that she was involved in include: “the homeless and starving, the children with AIDS, the battered women, and the destitute, and she worked towards banning landmines in places of war” (Gitlin, Martin). Princess Diana was associated with over a hundred different charities in her lifetime.
Suffering from the depression of having lost her paternal grandfather, and accepting that she could no longer put forth effort and move forward with her education took a major toll. Emotionally, Diana lacked a stable emotional foundation. When it came to relationships, she did not believe in happily ever after due to the collapse in her parents’ marriage. The difficulties that she experienced surrounding her own marriage seemed to make her stronger and more noticeable when it came to the type of charity work she carried and the media speculation. Those played a significant role in providing a support system for her – she focused her attention on helping others in order to make herself happy.
For the Merced Sun-Star on September 2, 1997, Ellen Goodman wrote an article on Diana. She felt as if we all helped kill Diana in a quote she states “How many forgot that Diana was real until she bled?” According to Ellen people would follow her like a celebrity when she was a normal person trying to do good deeds. In another article by William Montalbano in Los Angeles times quotes “As much as she hated the intrusion, Diana was an expert at using the press and paparazzi to her own advantage, the Daily Mirror newspaper’s veteran royal watcher…. Diana allowed herself to be photographed at length in the south of France with Fayed.” Diana knew how to use the media but I do not believe it was to be a celebrity but a strong person that demonstrates
