Within a federal republic, such as the United States, we tend to rely on representatives to represent us as a nation rather than us representing the nation. This is due to people’s capacity of knowledge as not everyone can be the best of themselves in every area. Eventually, leading to representatives, who have the knowledge in politics and government, in representing the people of every state. This type of situation is when the people, who are the principals, gives authority to the representative, who are the agents, to represent them. By definition, the principals are those who possess authority and agents are individuals who execute the authority on behalf of the principals (Kernell 29). Although this is common, not many individuals are aware that they are entering a principal and agent relationship. In the United …show more content…
Though it is not necessary for it to just involve politics, it can relate to legal matters, personal matters, or work related relationships. One example of a principal and agent relationship is a lawyer and its client. In this relationship, the principal is the client and the agent is the lawyer. This is a principal and agent relationship because the client is delegating its authority to the lawyer. The lawyer ends up being the agent who has received authority from the principal to handle the issue that the principal is requesting. The client gives authority to the lawyer because the client does not have the necessary knowledge to handle a matter that requires additional knowledge. The lawyer will be the representative of the client who has no background in legal cases. It will allow the client a higher chance of winning the case or having a better perspective on the matters that they are concerned about. Since the relationship involves a lawyer and client, this example will revolve around the law and legal issues, such as divorce, personal injury claim, or financial
When looking how effectively a country represents its citizens, it is important to take into account the manner in which they are represented. The two main types of representation are descriptive and agency representation. Descriptive representation is the concept that those who represent the American people should not only have the same political interest, but should also mirror the demographic makeup of the people. Agency representation, which is what the United States congress looks like, is when the representation does not reflect the demographic, but they speak for their constituents’ interests in congress. The constituents are able to hold the representatives accountable and can choose not to elect them in the next term, so the representatives
Representation in the form of a republic; the best way to settle disputes between the people and the elite, is by making the elite the representatives of the people “passing them through the medium of a chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of their country.” Madison even claimed that such an arrangement would render “the public voice, pronounced by the representatives of the people . . . more consonant to the public good than if pronounced by the people themselves.” Madison’s fear of the general public, illuminates the intended audience for Federalist 10, wealthy elites, being assured that their interests would be best served (and protected) with this Republic form of government, instituted by the Constitution. Therefore, thanks to the Constitution, the interests of the propertyless, like those of women and children, could be represented effectively by wise, fair-minded, wealthy white
It was John Adams who noted that "men in general, in every society, who are wholly destitute of property, are also little too acquainted with public affairs for a right judgment, and too dependent upon other men to have a will of their own."1 This shared attitude guided the Founding Fathers in their establishment of what has become America's modern day political system. When today's modern day student is asked just what sort of system that was, it seems the answer is always "democracy." In reality, the House of Representatives is the nearest idea in accordance with a system of democracy that this country would ever reach.2 Washington, Adams, and Jefferson were the wealth and success of their time, and coincidentally, it was these same
As an ethical and successful leader I believe that one must remember is that you should always considers your followers over yourself. Without them, you are not able to get anything done. You are best able to gage if your being a successful leader if others are willing to follow you to accomplish positive change. If you are always considering others then it is easy to maintain an ethical approach because you make yourself more aware of what could be viewed as unethical within not only your contextual view but also others who think differently then you. The Relational Leadership Model is useful to build the mindset for thinking about others if you focus on the ethical and empowering side of the model (Komives, S. R., Lucas, N., & McMahon, T. R, 2013). The way your treat those around you makes an important statement to your leadership style. Over all we do see men and woman in the field of museum work but the way they are treated is vastly different. Male curators will be involved in a more science and research field while women will usually fill the maintenance and care role. These two positions area not equally respected though they both use the title of curator. To maintain a collection is admirable but why collect if no information is obtained. So the woman in these positions are just a stepping stone for a researcher to come in and reap the rewards of intellectual discovery. The difficulties to practicing this form of leadership is that it is impossible to consider every
In a political system where nearly every adult may vote but where knowledge, wealth, social position, access to officials, and other resources are unequally distributed, who actually governs?” (Dahl 88) From April of 1775 to September of 1783, the Patriots fought to alleviate the colonies from the oppressive rule of Great Britain. All those for independence, rallied together to bring about a freedom which was at the time inconceivable and formed the United States of America. American Government, with deep roots in Greek Democracy and the Roman Republic, The United States pioneered a Democratic- Republic which had the greatest changing demographic and ethnicity levels of any other country in the world, developed under the theory of a pluralistic
The type of relationship I will be analyzing is my friendship with Jeremy Orner. The relationship model that best describes this relationship would be the one developed by Mark Knapp (Knapp & Vangelisti, 2006) who broke down relationship development into ten steps. This model explains friendship throughout our ten years as friends, so far we have been through 9 of the ten steps; Initiating, Experimenting, Intensifying, Integrating, Bonding, Differentiating, Circumscribing, Stagnating, and Avoiding,
In their roles, they have to identify the particular issues in their situational surroundings. They carry their individual liberty risks while serving their duties in the public service. The pursuit of interests through politics depend on their values, beliefs, and choices they make that will shape individualism rights. In the recent indictment, the sewer contamination industry caused local residents’ health conditions in danger because of elected leaders have ignored the concerns of hazardous effects. Now, Americans look at them as greedy and heartless leaders that have put their lives in a major connection to a live and death situation. These leaders face their consequences in pursuit in their selfish interests that turn out illegal and unnecessary evil. Now, the mobilization of political power is based on their liberty choices when they are in the leadership positions. In the world of politics, the hope of cooperative efforts toward common ends is necessary disappointed and, in a situation where each individual focus in pursuing their own interests selfishly (Bellah, 2007). Politics portrays the power status in the role of professional individualistic term clearly (Hudson, 2013, p.106).
I am submitting this letter to you regarding the matter of the Constitution, which is currently a matter of great debate in this country. The frame of government that the proposed constitution petitions, will properly represent the views and interests of the population of America (Livingston, 1788). It shall do so by granting the elite a role in governmental duties and offices, which will curtail corruption, influencing their ambitions in favor of public service, rather than allowing it to lead towards personal gain. Logically, a representative government is one that is supposed to represent the interests and desires of the population (Lloyd. Livingston 1788), and in order to do so, it will have to appoint representatives that are appointed to office not because of their wealth, instead for their virtue and dedication
For over two-hundred years United States’ senators and representatives have attempted to make life better for the citizens of our country. Yet, as time passes, our leaders fall in and out of the thoughts of ordinary people. Many people have become apathetic in their view of Congress, and this has resulted in a partly uninformed public. Both senators and representatives share the common roles like writing our nations laws, setting a budget, and overseeing the aggregate operations of the federal government. There are many differences, however, between the two offices of these elected lawmakers.
which power is vested on the public, who vote and elect people to represent them in leadership (Melina, 2011).
The kind of government created as a result of the ratification of the United States Constitution was nearly unprecedented in its day, but this does not mean that the framers of the Constitution developed their particular form of social contract out of thin air. Instead, they drew from a long line of legal and social contracts and writings in order to develop a robust system of governance meant to protect the rights of the individual while maintaining a sufficiently strong federal government. Examining some of the most important documents and ideas that the framers drew on will serve to demonstrate how the United States Constitution represents the culmination of nearly five centuries worth of political and social thought.
The sixth section of the first article of the United States Constitution, while complex in language, has a simple purpose. It acts as a safeguard against corruption and patronism within the government by disallowing the appointment of a congressman to an office within the executive branch, and preventing members of the legislature leaving their posts for higher paying positions. This section was written under the assumption that human nature is inherently self serving, and the actions of those in positions of governmental power tend to reflect that.
Throughout our time on Earth, us humans have always tried to form a way to govern ourselves whether it was with a representative democracy, monarchy, or dictatorship along with many other forms of government. Of all these forms of government a representative democracy has been appraised as the best form of government by many civilized nations, but a representative democracy still has an array of issues which are not the fault of the government itself. The blame lies on the people. A representative democracy requires for the people living under that democracy as citizens to be diligent and knowledgeable about what’s going on in their government. Citizens must stay informed constantly to make proper decisions on who they
An example of the principal-agent problem is elections. Elections produce responsiveness. Responsiveness breeds trust in politicians. In order to gain that trust, politicians must obey the wishes of their voters to the best of their abilities. The voters use this to their advantage by voting, monitoring, and, if necessary, voting politicians out of office. However, the problem of low voter turnout prevents the solutions to the principal-agent problem. If people do not vote, their wishes can not be expected to be granted. In the United States of
Most of agency problems exist when there is legal relationship between principle and an agent creating the Principal-Agent Relationship. Commonly, principal-agent conflict may arise when agent is not practicing his duties as an agent. Such as;
