Some extremely memorable moments in my life occurred in Washington D.C., when a huge sense of awe struck me, on the Jesuit Pro-life Club’s trip for the 2017 March for Life. It started off rather simply: the Jesuit High School Pro-life Club was traveling to the capital for the annual protest of abortion in the United States. After two flights by plane and a few hours napping, we finally arrived in D.C.! The club collectively boarded the Metro, which would be our main mode of transport during our stay. We were off to our first Mass of the trip! The religious reasons for our pilgrimage would neither be neglected nor delayed, so we immediately began our prayers at various chapels and churches in the "American Rome." The churches we visited filled
I am pro-life. I always have and always will stand firm in my beliefs. I will especially remain firm in my belief that no innocent human being, especially unborn, should have to pay the consequences of someone else’s actions. Realizing that many others tend to disagree, I do not shove my opinions on abortion on anyone. However, being criticized for having the opinion that I do happens all the time and has only solidified my beliefs on this touchy subject of societal controversy. Growing tired of many endless conversations and arguments in my life, I interviewed a member of Planned Parenthood to get more insight on opposing opinions of mine.
Since 1963, there are many movies, shows, books, and poems that are dedicated to this horrific event to commemorate the loss of the four girls and their families. During that time period, it is imperative that we know and understand where we came from and remember the people that dedicated their life to help us get our freedom. In the poem, a mom has to tell her daughter that she can’t participate in the march, but she has to go to church and same goes with the film. Families took their faith very seriously and not going to church was never an
The sound of blaring car horns and chatter of important phone conversations filled the city of Washington D.C. Men and Women dressed in business attire raced frantically up and down faintly painted crosswalks pushing by me as if I weren't there. A place I once thought was professional and mindful turned out to be more deceiving than I imagined. as I walked through the city I realized it was a place of chaos and oblivious people. I walked around the city for a few minutes before I discovered Pershing Park ( a park known for its protests). Along the perimeter of the park I saw mostly business people walking in and out of government buildings and occasionally a tourist snapping pictures next to a historic landmark.
Abortion has been one of the largest disputes for a very long time. Abortion is the action of
Another pro-life group is known as the Pro-life Action League. This group holds prayer vigils outside abortion facilities and provides sidewalk counseling to women and/or couples seeking abortions. The goal of this is to provide abortion alternatives, counseling, access to pregnancy resources, etc. This group is also involved in public protests to raise awareness of the injustice of abortion; they participate in marches, pickets, prayer vigils, and also raise awareness by holding large abortion pictures on busy streets to show what the end result of abortion is on an unborn child. They also hold a monthly protest at Planned Parenthood in Aurora, one of the busiest Planned Parenthood clinics, and protest pro-abortion politicians and other public figures that oppose the rights of unborn babies. Some of the other objectives of this group are to confront abortionists, abortion promoters, infiltrate pro-choice group meetings, and provide training to pro-life activists to help them organize effective programs and become successful pro-life leaders. I have discussed four very different groups, half are pro-choice and half are pro-life. While researching groups actively participating in rallying for or against abortion, there were so many with different tactics and resources available for both sides of the abortion debate.
Abortion is a very serious situation in the world. It is a medical procedure to end a pregnancy. There are many reasons why women abort their babies but none of these reasons are valid. Therefore, mothers should think of other ways instead of termination. These innocent babies are victims in the womb. Abortion needs to stop because it is clearly wrong to kill our children, our faith teaches us otherwise, and we should protect human life.
In the article “Defending Choice, Yet Again: An Unapologetic Defense of Abortion Rights-- and About Time,” written by Lindsay Beyerstein in The American Prospect, abortion and the reason chose to be Pro Choice are addressed. Many people throughout life can overcome the question, is abortion right? The only problem is no one can never give the reason for yes or no. The information provided in this article shows of ways that people should look back and reevaluate their decision on thinking that abortion is wrong. It has been detected that in many places recently, “Abortion access has decreased dramatically in Texas since the state’s restrictive anti-choice law went into effect in 2013” (Beyerstein). Also it is described how, “...Texas
Imagine a world where you are forced to give birth to a child you cannot support financially or emotionally, a child that was produced from rape or incest, a child that would suffer from prenatal diseases, or a child that threatened the life of the mother. That is the world that a pro life advocate sees for our nation’s future. We are all entitled to our own opinions, but the moment we start to impose our beliefs onto others is where the line is crossed. The main difference between the pro life and pro choice stance is that the pro life movement infringes on women’s right to bodily autonomy. Along with the pro life sentiment is a sense of ignorance and blatant misogyny. For example, Republican Rep. Todd Akins stated, on the issue of pregnancy as a result of rape, “It seems to be, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, it’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.” Akins clearly represents the misinformation of men in particular about female anatomy. Case in point would be during the debate over an anti-abortion bill when Rep. Lisa Brown was indefinitely silenced from speaking on the House floor after uttering the medically correct term “vagina”. Republicans in the room were shocked and offended by their fellow humans anatomical structure, demonstrating the fact that if one cannot discuss a woman’s reproductive system, one should not be able to regulate or dictate it. As another tactic to shame women for
According the Merriam-Webster dictionary pro-life is defined as, “opposed to abortion.” However, through my Catholic education I have learned that being pro-life expands to other topics rather than just abortion, such as human trafficking, genocide, ethnic cleansing, the rise of ISIS, clean water, and euthanasia to name a few. While I may agree on a moral level with the pro-life stance on several of the issues listed above, I would not classify my beliefs as being pro-life. I do not believe that one has to be pro-life, simply a halfway decent human being to understand the unjustness in human trafficking, genocide, and ethnic cleansing. Such crimes are especially heinous. Nor does one have to be pro-life to understand the repercussions of ISIS taking control of the
On January 21, 2017, an estimated 500,000 Americans marched on the National Mall, continuing a longstanding tradition of protest on this public space. On this particular day, protesters sought to send a message to President Donald Trump regarding women’s rights. Known as the Women’s March, this event is only one of the more recent examples of large-scale protest and dissent on the National Mall. Throughout American history, protest movements have often made their way to Washington, D.C., the capital city and political center of the United States. Although the National Mall was not necessarily designed in a way that fosters protest, it quickly became the foremost venue for American demonstration. As AIDS activist Cleve Jones once stated, “the
Abortion policy has been shifting throughout American history as American views have simultaneously transitioned from more conservative to more liberal. Doctors, specifically regular physicians, have surprisingly guided the discussion surrounding abortion in the most influential way. Their power, in particular, their medical expertise, has allowed them to take hold of the issue and push against abortion from a medical stance. As a result of the change in traditionalistic views, the power the doctors held for a long time was taken by women, and abortion simultaneously became not an issue of health, but one questioning morality as well as a woman’s right to choose: pro-life and pro-choice. In America, abortion policy has transitioned from an issue of health and morality to one of women’s rights over time due to the power shifting from doctors to women as a result of modernization and the change in how Americans saw religion; this shift in turn impacting how the abortion issue’s sides are defined and how the issue is argued.
Pro-life is one side of the highly debated topic of abortion. However, by pro-life being viewed as the “God” side of the argument, abortion has more of a moral and ethical base to the discussion (ProCon). By understanding the views behind pro-life which aid in understanding the views and standpoints such as the role the government plays in how abortion functions in American, the role religious views and values play in how abortion is viewed from a religious standpoint, as well as how abortion is viewed from a medical standpoint, and finally a ethical and social view on the issue.
The Pro-Life act of 2015 and 2016 is a proposed policy in the United States that is currently a bill which stands for the act of being against all methods of child abortion. This bill gives the Public Health Service Act the power to prohibit fetal tissue to be exchanged for scientific research, or payments that may include the surgical implanting, transporting, or storing fetal tissue (). Even though the fetal tissues that are used to help cure diseases, it is still using the tissues of what could have been a living offspring. As you are curing a life you are taking life away from another living being. This bill has been recently issued this year, because abortion is now becoming more common trend in the United States of America.() It is at the moment under the debate between the Democrats who believe in the Pro Choice Movement and the Republicans side with Pro Life. The bill has not been passed yet, but later on in 2016 we should see if it gets passed by the senate or not.
Throughout this entire course we have learned about several different issues that women have faced for several years and that they still face even today. One of the lessons that stood out the most to me was the one about abortion. This is not just an issue that affects women but this issue affects men as well. Abortion is a major topic in today’s society. You have a great number of people who against it and there are also some who support it. There are many different situations that a person takes into consideration before making their decisions. I believe that the article “And So I Choose” by Allison Crews that we read in class was a major eye opener for many people. Though I am pro-life, I learned a lot from this particular piece. I think
Twenty to thirty million legal abortions occur worldwide each year. The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between – (Mother Teresa). Before 1973, individual states were allowed to decide whether abortion would be legal within their borders. The topic of abortion and whether or not it is right or wrong is a constant debate in todays society. Everyone has their own beliefs on the matter, but it should not be a question of what we believe, it should be the question of whether or not this procedure should be considered an illegal act. There are hundreds of woman everyday that have an abortion, and hundreds of innocent lives being slaughtered legally. The fact that this procedure is legal in the U.S, and that people actually see it as their “choice” or “right” to abort the baby, disturbs me immensely. Preforming the procedure of an abortion should be illegal in all states because abortion is murder, the fetuses can feel the pain during the procedure, and abortion can lead to psychological damage.
