Good Evening, My name is Terri Skinner reporting from TSJJ News Broadcasting, here to discuss the war and who it affected before and after WWI. Before WWI many Americans were in what we considered the “Progressive Era” in which many were faced with inequality, social, economic, and political challenges. Many different groups were affected such as Women to African Americans. Migrations occurred form Europe as well as for African Americans from the South to the North. Many where starting to growing in numbers as well as influence, which included women, churches, reform groups and working classes all played a part in progressivism. In 1912, President Wilson would go on to become president. What greatly influenced his win was the Bull Moose Party in which was led by former president Teddy Roosevelt, would seal President Wilson win into office in 1913. Wilson created unity for our nation and helped fix several problems that were going on before his term and created the Federal Reserve Act helping the economy. He also created the 14 points to create a platform for debate in which proved to be a failure. During the …show more content…
They faced challenges with the migration and between 1915-1916 they faced even more challenges when their crops where attacked by boll weevil which ultimately ruined their crops. This caused economic conditions to worsen for them and then another misfortune was the fact that they were stripped of their rights to vote. Black southerners moving to the North caused more distress for them trying to make a living. While the economic grew, it also caused problems for the Europeans as well which caused labor to become unavailable because of the elimination cheap labor to be replaced with black southerners to fill positions. African Americans started to feel like they were making
During the Progressive Era, pressure from labor, suffrage, and conservation movements profoundly changed the course of American history. Many of the reformers' ideas clashed with the male-dominated, capitalist economic structure present at the turn of the century. Some of the intended reforms opposed the current system, but the level of social unrest necessitated change. Businessmen and activists alike initiated the reforms during the Progressive Era. Government, due to the intention of calming the common man and quieting the seemingly more and more vocal middle class, supported them. In the final analysis, from the year 1900 to 1920, Progressive Era reformers were successful in bringing about reform to the United States.
As a PhD and former president of Princeton University, Wilson had a bit softer of approach to the presidency. Wilson, like Roosevelt, was a progressive reformer, instituting federal institutes, such as the Federal Reserve and the Federal Trade Commission, but Wilson had quite the opposite ideas of war and conquest. Wilson was slow to enter The Great War, and only did so to preserve American life when Germany began targeting passenger ships carrying American citizens. When America entered the war and helped a achieve a quick, decisive victory for the Allies, he was hailed overseas as the “hero from the West.” His creation of The League of Nations, which was shot down by the Senate during his infirm years following a stroke, likely could have helped prevent further unrest in European nations that led to World War
In the Progressive Era, reformers sought change to many industries that didn’t provide protection to the consumer, as well as the way certain groups of people, such as women, were looked at in the views of society. During this period, progressive reformers had a major role in the protection of consumers and the breakup of monopolies to which they were widely successful.
Daniel Zheng APUSH Wells March 4th, 2016 APUSH DBQ: Evaluate the effectiveness of Progressive Era and the federal government in bringing about reforms at the national level… During the period of 1900-1920, which is now also known as the Progressive Era, the United States witnessed many beneficial changes in hopes of improving the American lifestyle hence labelling the era as progressive. Not only did the reformers and the federal government succeed in major changes such as woman suffrage, they also managed to regain control from corporate powers that had formed monopolies during the Gilded Age. Furthermore, with the influx of immigrants through Angel and Ellis islands, the increase of child labor became one of the most prominent issues within large corporations. Precautions for basic sanitary and safety needs were not met hence not
After World War II, the American psyche became permanently stained with new ideas. During this time period, the American government actively sought to change the way the American people thought. The support of the American public was crucial to the success of the war effort. Many ideas introduced during this point of time consisted of new roles of certain people groups in American society. Women and minority groups would prove themselves in the workplace, millions of citizens would be discriminated against, and social barriers would be broken and assembled. Even though World War II took place in Europe and the Pacific, it made lasting social changes that can still be seen in America.
From the 1930s to the 1950s, African Americans were being severely persecuted and ostracized. The Jim Crow Laws allowed for legal segregation and continued control over blacks in the South. Those laws severely restricted the rights of the African American in the southern half of the United States and essentially continued to restrain them even though the United States Constitution forbid it. The North did not have such laws, but blacks still suffered. When African Americans migrated to the North, they were disillusioned by the fact that they were still not equal. The African Americans were instead delivered a subtler form of the discriminatory actions within the South. African Americans struggled for equality everywhere because of white

“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal”(Nightingale). The Progressive Era was a very impactful time period in American history. Inventions were beginning to be made that needed basic necessities such as steel and oil, causing businesses to earn extreme amounts of money. Those wealthy lived an easy lifestyle, while workers in their own factories didn’t. As time went on muckrakers appeared in the industry.
We tend to think of the Progressives as a group that was interested in making the United States more democratic, but this is not uniformly true. It is more accurate to say that most Progressives were mainly interested in increasing the amount of democracy available to middle class, native whites and were less interested in increasing democracy for the poor, for immigrants, and for non-whites.
Other ways African Americans would cope during the process is to peacefully dream of a hopeful, and better future for themselves, or even concentrate on their work in order to gain respect for the men to also be taught proper education. Unfortunately, through this Era, there wasn't much hope or a better-ness of life until the Westward Expansion happened that ultimately divided the North and South on determination to keep expanding slavery throughout the western territories. Leading on from coping mechanisms, we have the Westward Expansion that has impacted slavery in the United States. The Westward Expansion had ultimately divided north and south of their different beliefs such as slavery. The North was starting become the Industrial Revolution, which they progressed from little manufactory to huge quantities of manufactory. "Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special-purpose machinery, factories and mass production. The iron and textile
African Americans moved from southern farms to the North. In the North, they lived in segregated neighborhoods, faced violence, and were given the worst jobs. Conditions in the South were even worse, because state laws deprived them of civil rights and segregated them from whites (Schultz, 2014).
The many social issues blacks faced in the south prepared them for what they would be facing in the north. Blacks coming from a back ground of slavery continued to following them through the many years of the migration. The Great Migration brought about so many social challenges because for centuries blacks were treated like animals. They were not able to find their niche in an economy that was not created for them. Social issues such as Jim Crow laws, racism, discrimination, prejudice, and other issues that effect a certain population of people, all played a
World War II (WWII) had an immense effect on the United States; culturally, economically, and industrially. Although no battles were fought on American soil, the war affected all phases of American life. Among the infinite of changes experienced by Americans during this time, there was a big shift in the industrial complex, a re-imagining of the role of women in society, and economic boost. Social shifts began to shape a new national identity which would change the country forever.
World War II had a definite impact on the United States. It changed how people lived and how other people were viewed. Not many people realize the treatment of people from our own country during World War II. Three groups of people that were affected were women, African Americans, and Japanese Americans. The lives of these people were changed drastically, whether by having to work, mistreatment because of skin color, or by being blamed for something that was done by a country they were native to.
There are lots of aspects in this world that can affect how the world works through individual small and big changes. War, however, is one aspect that cannot only make a difference but revolutionize them catastrophically too. The aftermaths of each war can be brutal and render changes to the economy, social environment, the cultural values, etc. through gender, race, religion, and so on. Such is the case of the two wars of the world that totally changed the world from back then till today. The WWI and WWII have been drastically changing for each country even when it comes to a big country like America. There have surely been setbacks while the WWI has also brought about many changes in the social, economic, military, as well as cultural grounds for commonalities like religion, race, gender, language, norms, etc. They have changed America to give a new deal and showed how America works today and the environment that prevails there today too. It also means that overall America changed socially with politics. Thus, there are many reasons given by the WWI that have turned America on socio-political grounds more apparently in the case of attitudes towards religion, gender, and race.
