As a character, the dragon serves to speak with Grendel and illustrate how meaningless the world is. He does this by describing the blend of past, present, and future of which he experiences. He also does this by telling Grendel to “find a pile of gold and sit on it.” This conversation shows the view point of the dragon in that, being content with his state of being, he is able to see the world change moving forward and backward simultaneously.

"Fighting over power. Like every dragon ever. But it's not their power - it's Darkstalker's, and they want to use it, the same way Scarlet used mine. But that scroll is too dangerous to be in this world. Even if a good dragon controlled it... even if it didn't change that good dragon to have that much power... even if we could somehow guarantee that it would never fall into evil talons... it shouldn't exist. (3 Marks) Throughout the short story, it is evident that at times the psychiatrist retreats to his conscious state often. This is shown when the psychiatrist unwittingly sits in Kirk’s chair and looked at his office as if it were his first time there. Unknowingly the psychiatrist had “moved around to the other side of the circle and lowered himself into Kirk’s chair”. This shows his conscious mind making decisions revealing his true feelings, that the psychiatrist deeply relates to Kirk and can easily put himself in Kirk’s shoes.
