Ever heard of Christopher Columbus? Do you celebrate Columbus Day? If you do either then you have probably heard of his “great” accomplishments, and if so have you heard about what he caused and did to get that fame. Christopher Columbus has done some terrible things like almost completing genocide. Celebrating Columbus Day is like thanking him for all the horrible things he has done. Christopher Columbus should be judged by today's standards because he had enslaved many natives to the West Indies when they had traded him things like gold for only silverware and plates. Columbus Day should be not be celebrated instead just be replaced because there are more cons than pros to his accomplishments, and also the West Indies, nor North America were …show more content…
In fact Columbus started a genocide of native in the West Indies. According to Document F Columbus was only trying to earn gold and fame, and that selfishness caused killing and the destruction of an infinite number of souls. This means that Columbus was one of the people who only cared about their success and social standing, which makes him a terrible person because he also enslaved people who thought him and his crew were angels from heaven. This is important because we shouldn't celebrate such a terrible person, because it sets a bad example for younger people. Therefore Columbus Day should not be celebrated because it tells children they will get rewarded if they do something bad but they do something good as well, and it's as if we congratulating Columbus for enslaving people, punishing them, and almost completing genocide. According to Document H Columbus shouldn't be judged because we don't there are things that are being taught today that are more dangerous and it's too late to judge him now, but the reason we look at history is to learn from our mistakes and Columbus has made mistakes that we can learn from and teach the next
In the United States, there are many holidays that are celebrated by its citizens. Some of these holidays consist of individuals taking the day off from work and school, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day. During these days off, individuals have the chance to reflect on the day itself, and rejoice on the purpose of the holiday. Every holiday has a distinct and positive meaning towards the United States and its people, but there is one holiday in particular that is controversial in this aspect- the celebration of Christopher Columbus- Columbus Day. This controversy is JJJJJJ because even though Christopher Columbus had a big role in discovering America, he also was a terrible human being who tortured many. In my opinion, I believe that the celebration of discovering America should continue to be celebrated. Although, the holiday should be shifted from honoring Columbus, to instead celebrating the discovery of the United States of America by the indigenous people who were already settled in our land.
Columbus Day is to honor people but, not a lot of people want to honor him because he was not very kind and nice. Columbus didn’t care about trade routes or getting to know different cultures. When he saw some of the natives wearing gold jewelry he made it his mission to kill or make as many slaves he can. He’s mission was also to steal as much gold as he could. According to Ban Columbus Day? There shouldn’t be a Debate “After landing October 12, 1492, by November Columbus kidnapped ten Tainos Indians.” He wasn’t really nice. His goal was to get as much money as he could.
When you think of Columbus what comes to mind? A hero? A villain? Most people think he is a hero, but many do not think of the things he did to people such as slavery, beatings, raping, etc. He is most known for discovering America, but he only got to the Bahamas. Columbus was an Italian explorer that sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because of the awful things that don’t make up for the discoveries that Christopher Columbus did.
We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.
Some say that Columbus Day shouldn't be a holiday or that the name should be changed, I believe that we should get rid of the holiday. When you are little, you are taught Christopher Columbus discovered America and he's a good person; however, in reality, none of that is true. Columbus didn't discover America, he found some islands in the Caribbean like Haiti and Cuba. In addition, he treated the Natives there with harsh cruelties. Columbus also brought over diseases that lead to the death of many natives because they weren't exposed to measles, influenza, small pox. “Christopher Columbus introduced two phenomena that revolutionized race relations and
Columbus Day shouldn 't be a holiday anymore because all the Indians he enslaved and killed during his voyage. Columbus had made a promise to bring back slaves, gold, copper, and girls to be used for sex. According to A Patriot 's History ... about 56 million people were killed
To change Columbus Day to no longer be a holiday would be turning a blind eye to a difficult history, yet still turning that eye away from a history with a side to be celebrated. I instead ask of you to celebrate Columbus Day, learn the full history, including the wrong doings of Columbus and his crew, and celebrate the good change brought about by this event that ultimately led to the lifestyle you lead today. If the wrongs of every event in history were to be scrutinized would we have a history left to celebrate? Think of the reasons why we celebrate a moment in history, and then think why we have not excluded that from our celebrations. I believe it is to celebrate the good times and the bad and to never forget why we are here in this
Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain in 1492 and claimed all islands around San Salvador looking for gold. Spain eventually sent Columbus back to create an Empire. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of Columbus’ cruel punishments towards others, the way he influenced today's world, and the way he did not prove anything new. Christopher Columbus caused cruel punishment by cutting peoples hands off, making dogs attack the Native Americans, and by silencing the Native Americans. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because he influenced today's world negatively through slavery, stereotyping, and genocide. Finally, Columbus did not prove anything new because people already lived in the new world, he was not the first non-american
The first reason why columbus day should be banned or changed is Christopher Columbus didn't actually discover America. Where he did land is in a unknown Caribbean island.Secondly during his interactions with the “indians” he used them for slavery and forced the Native Americans to convert to Christianity. Finally the last reason that Columbus Day should be banned or changed is that during the “age of exploration”, Columbus brought many different diseases to the native
Columbus Day is a day on the second Monday of October that recognizes the exploration of America. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who worked in the Spanish government who came to the island of Hispaniola in pursuit of finding a shorter route to India. This controversial holiday sparks many argument about why we shouldn’t have the holiday and others defending the holiday. The good does not make for a good argument against all the bad that the day represents, including: taking a land that was not his, the brutal genocide of Natives, and the enslavement of Natives for illogical reasons.
Lately, there have been some questions to whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. This question is highly debateable, but the accomplishments of Columbus overcome any doubt to whether he should be celebrated. Columbus is one of the most recognized explorers ever, he was ambitious, intelligent, and dedicated. Columbus should have a day commemorating him, and that is self evident.
Columbus Day should not be abolished as a national holiday, because Columbus overcame obstacles to arrive in America (Document E). To begin with, Columbus sailed over an unknown sea, without knowing what was on the other side. If it wasn’t for Columbus’ bravery, America would still be unknown to most of us. Second, he made a great proficiency in geography, astronomy, and drawing, as they were necessary to his favorite pursuit of navigation (Document B). Finally, Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds (Document E). In conclusion Columbus overcame obstacles to find America, so we have to show Columbus some appreciation.
Columbus was an explorer who initiated a series of explorations to the Americas and paved the way for new trade routes to Asia; however, a holiday that is dedicated to a man who ‘found’ a territory already inhabited, and glorifies a voyage that commenced a mass genocide and slave trade should not be celebrated.
Despite Christopher Columbus being celebrated as a hero for centuries, some of his actions would not be celebrated by many. For years Columbus has been considered the first to discover America, but research concludes that a Viking had discovered America long before he did. With more and more information about him popping up, should we really celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus has been given credit for discovering an already discovered country, enslaved the natives of America, and almost completely wiped out the Taino people.
Columbus day should not be celebrated because he was part of the Columbia exchange which traded people, animals, and foods. He also had a great thirst for gold like many other explorers. he has also been accused for spreading smallpox and the flu, which killed 70 to 80 percent of the population of the Native American's, but this happen over many decades. holding Columbus responsible is not very logical but some people still believe it because he traveled all over the world and he could have picked up a disease that didn't harm people but could harm a person with a lower immune system from another country. he also called the Spaniards wild, starving, beasts because they tried to take over the Indian's which Christopher Columbus discovered.
