Should We Celebrate Columbus Day?

In the United States, there are many holidays that are celebrated by its citizens. Some of these holidays consist of individuals taking the day off from work and school, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day. During these days off, individuals have the chance to reflect on the day itself, and rejoice on the purpose of the holiday. Every holiday has a distinct and positive meaning towards the United States and its people, but there is one holiday in particular that is controversial in this aspect- the celebration of Christopher Columbus- Columbus Day. This controversy is JJJJJJ because even though Christopher Columbus had a big role in discovering America, he also was a terrible human being who tortured many. In my opinion, I believe that the celebration of discovering America should continue to be celebrated. Although, the holiday should be shifted from honoring Columbus, to instead celebrating the discovery of the United States of America by the indigenous people who were already settled in our land.

When you think of Columbus what comes to mind? A hero? A villain? Most people think he is a hero, but many do not think of the things he did to people such as slavery, beatings, raping, etc. He is most known for discovering America, but he only got to the Bahamas. Columbus was an Italian explorer that sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because of the awful things that don’t make up for the discoveries that Christopher Columbus did.

     The spirit and values of a nation are reflected in the nation’s heroes. Christopher Columbus has been regarded as an American hero since 1792. Every year Columbus Day is held on the second Monday in October to honor the man and his legacy. However, many people debate whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. I believe that Columbus Day should be celebrated in the United States because he opened up the New World to Europe, inspired a spirit of exploration and adventure that still lasts today, and he showed the importance of diversity and understanding of different cultures.

After many centuries, a lot of controversy still surrounds Christopher Columbus. He remains to be a strange figure in history regarded as a famous explorer and a great mariner who made many discoveries in his days. Other people still regard him as a visionary and a national hero while others chose to remember him as a brutal and greedy person who used the rest of the humanity for his own selfish gains. Despite the fact that there have been protests in his being honored through a holiday referred to as the Columbus Day, he still deserves recognition and acknowledgement as a historical figure performed a great role in the making of the modern world.

Columbus was an italian explorer who took four voyages across the atlantic ocean. Columbus day should be celebrated because he brought attention to america, its history as one of the oldest holidays. He brought attention to america because of its legacy, discovery of america, and having no change in growth in the population for thousands of years. It also had a great history because of the reason it started, why it was honored, and because of how many years it's been celebrated.

We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.

Columbus Day shouldn 't be a holiday anymore because all the Indians he enslaved and killed during his voyage. Columbus had made a promise to bring back slaves, gold, copper, and girls to be used for sex. According to A Patriot 's History ... about 56 million people were killed

The second Monday in October is celebrated across America as Columbus Day. It is a celebration of the man who discovered America. In school, children are taught that Christopher Columbus was a national hero. In actuality, the man was a murderer. It is true that he found a land that was unknown to the "civilized" world, yet in this discovery, he erased the natives inhabiting the land. With slavery, warfare, and inhumane acts, Christopher Columbus and the men who accompanied him completely destroyed a people, a culture, and a land. These are not actions that should be heralded as heroic.

America should still celebrate Columbus Day, even though he was in charge for killing thousands of innocent people he still did have the right idea and stuck with it to find new land and gold to make spain richer, himself too. He had to beg and beg for the king and queen to give him ships for along time, 1 year exactly, once he was granted it he put so much time, his whole life, to find what he didn't know was actually real or there. Even though Amerigo Vespucci found the actual land, Columbus was the one who had the right idea and gave Vespucci the idea to go searching for it. Without Columbus no one would have found it or even knew it was there. Some people think that it shouldn't be counted because he did get innocent people killed, many

Columbus Day is labeled in The United States of America as a whole day to celebrate Christopher Columbus founding America. Kids across America love Columbus Day because they have the day off from school. People who work in Federal Offices get a day off as well, but some are not as happy with the day as the children are.

First of all, I believe that we should keep Columbus day is because he helped establish America as a place for the Europeans to travel to. Even though he thought that he had partially circumnavigated the Earth around to India, his voyage was essential in opening the way for European explorers during the Age of Exploration. This eventually led to colonies being settled in America and eventually the founding of the independent country of the United States of America. The voyages also helped the economy of Europe.

Columbus didn’t discover anything new, making a reason why we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus didn’t discover America. He could have discover a place where people had already live there for years. Columbus contributed nothing to European knowledge. Columbus having no actual discovery meant that there wasn’t anything new to learn. Columbus also didn’t convert any natives to Christianity. “The Indians of the Caribbean were destroyed within two generations by the spanish discovers” (Source 1). Columbus Day shouldn’t be celebrated since Christopher Columbus himself was a cruel man.

"Should the United States celebrate Columbus Day?" In my opinion, the United States should celebrate Columbus Day because it is celebrated as a day when America was discovered. It is a part of history that we can not ignore. While I realize that we should not celebrate a day that marked the start of a massacre and bloodshed for decades to come, I cannot help but think that behind most revolutions and wars in history, blood has been shed. In addition, I feel that we do not celebrate Columbus Day to mock anyone or to accept the crimes of Christopher Columbus, but rather we celebrate it as a day our roots in America began. In addition, our morals are different than what people thought of as acceptable back then. Who are we to judge the actions done by someone else? We have neither lived in that time period nor were we raised the way they were. We were taught what they were taught. It is undeniable that without Columbus, much of what we have today may have not existed. Of course, this by no means show that I encouraging the way he treated the Natives, but rather stating that this is a indubitable part of our history that we should not be so ashamed of

I think that Columbus should be celebrated or at least recognized. While Columbus did do some terrible things like supporting slave trade and destroying the indigenous people. He also started the beginning of the Age of Exploration which played a huge role in shaping history. His efforts really bridged the gap between the New World and the Old World. This resulted in a vast expansion of goods, technology, and culture between them. Though he wasn’t the first to discover America, he started an incredible expedition that has had serious effects on the advancements in today’s society. Though what he did was horrible, conquests and slavery were not only common practices of the time but important parts of the development of civilization. Colonization

The culture in America is more polarizing than ever. People debate complex ideas and issues every day, yet few and fewer people are sitting on the fence or in middle ground. Most people find themselves on one end of the spectrum or another. One such debate that more recently exists in the United States of America resolves around Columbus Day. This day used to be just any ordinary day; however, it has now become a highly contested day that some have even banned from being celebrated. Furthermore, the debate of Columbus Day, orientates itself around some confusion. Is it a day to celebrate Columbus and all that he did – the good and the bad or is it something to celebrate something else? And can people separate the bad from the good? Therefore, in an effort to clear up the confusion about Columbus Day, William J.
