. The FDA notes a long list in the article of what they are used for: "GE plants are used to make ingredients that are then used in other food products. Such ingredients include: corn starch in soups and sauces, corn syrup used as a sweetener, corn oil, canola oil and soybean oil in mayonnaise, salad dressings, breads, and snack foods, sugar from sugar beets in various foods. Other major crops with GE varieties include potatoes, squash, apples and papayas." It is surprising to me exactly how much food is processed using genetically modified crops. In this same article the FDA claims GE plants are safe to eat, and that they are just as safe as non-GE foods are. The testing of these crops to see if they are safe for human and animal consumption …show more content…
In the handbook titled GM Foods written by David E. Newton there is a section that explains why GM foods are not labelled, which caused outrage back in the 90s. This section written by Dr. Phill Jones who earned his PhD in physiology and pharmacology. He was also a patent attorney. For ten years he specialized in biological, chemical and medical inventions. He states that "The FDA's authority comes from the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and according to the act, the FDA can only require information on a label that is accurate and material." He also mentions that the labeling of GM food would go against the FDA's regulation system. He mentions that the FDA uses science to evaluate the safety of foods and focuses on the characteristics more than how the plants were engineered. I would think that the safety of the food would also incorporate the plants' health, where and how it grows. He also claims that "advocates for GM food labeling claim that these labels would enable consumers to avoid health risks probably associated with GM foods." I believe people should be aware of what they are eating and have a choice to buy the products or not. We should know where the food is coming from and exactly what and how it is produced or modified. Without labeling people are forced to continue eating GM foods …show more content…
Especially now since they have been in the food source for over twenty years there are still concerns with the resistance of antibiotics. Labeling would give consumers a choice. It is their right to know what is in the products they are consuming. Sydney Lupkin mentions an opposing view of GM food safety in a news article. He mentioned that Lisa Cimperman, who is a clinical dietitian, claims that there is no evidence that genetically modified foods are unsafe and that there simply isn't any real evidence that proves otherwise. I feel it is possible that there is no evidence because the testing is left up to the food developers who are making a larger profit by mass producing GM crops. It is also noted in the article that in 1990 genetically modified soybeans caused allergic reactions in people with Brazil Nut allergies. They found that the soybeans contained a gene from the Brazil Nut. Production was stopped on that specific soybean. This crop was modified, and some people had an allergic reaction to it. If these genes are being absorbed and causing allergic reactions then, in my opinion, antibiotic resistant markers that are
A GMO is a genetically modified organism that goes through the process of genetic engineering. This is when genes of one organism are extracted, altered, and then artificially placed into another organism to then grow. We typically see GMOs in the food we consume every day. These foods include fruits and vegetables, however the most common organisms that are genetically engineered include, corn, soy, and cotton. It is ultimately the unnatural cross breeding of plants, animals, bacteria, and virus genes (Non-GMO Project). But now why is there a debate for placing a label to notify consumers of GMOs in their foods? Do we know the potential harm that GMOs can cause? We have the right to know what we are putting into our bodies and what is found in our everyday foods.
The Federal Government should require labeling of GMO’s on genetically modified foods. The people deserve to know what they put in their bodies. Some of the food is very unhealthy and some people are completely unaware of that fact. Many food companies do not put out all the information about what goes into the food in which we consume, if the Federal government were to require labeling of all GMO foods then the people could be well educated about what they put inside their bodies, and know if it is good for them or not. GMO stands for genetically modified foods, a genetically modified food is “..an organism whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found
Foods with GMO ingredients need to be labeled because they are bad for your health. GMOs are not proven to be safe in the long run. The FDA has not run any tests to tell whether or not GMOs are safe. GMOs are linked to birth defects, and to Gluten disorders. According to USRTK, “ The FDA does not require independent pre-market safety testing for genetically engineered food. As a matter of practice, the agrichemical companies submit their own studies to the FDA as part of a
Many will argue that Genetically Modified Organisms(GMOs) are not safe for human consumption, however they are almost inevitable for our everyday food consumption. Some argue that the recent increase in gluten intolerance is caused by GMO foods (Argument against). Other state that the risk to humans by GMO’s is relatively small (The GMO”). The bottom line is what people put into their bodies is a personal choice and a person should be able to easily tell if a product has been genetically modified or not.
For producers of food animals in the United States this year is not going to be the same as any other year in the past. Why, you may ask? The Food and Drug Administration created stricter guidelines to the Veterinary Feed Directive. For example, any beef producer has used or heard of MGA in their lifetime. Many producers just order MGA, mix it with the feed and feed it. MGA is used to synchronize heifers or to prevent heifers from coming into heat in the feedlot so they don’t waste energy while in heat. Producers are now going to have to take extra steps to get the antibiotics they need for their heard. This is going to affect almost all producers of food animals, large and small. The FDA is going to have to teach and inform producers about how what and why this is put into effect. FDA and researchers are going to have to explain to and keep producers up to date with information like the following.
Whether or not to require labeling of GM foods is a major issue in the persistent debate over the risks and benefits of foods crops that are produced using biotechnology. Bills requiring compulsory labeling have been introduced and proposed in different levels, but not evenly implemented. Some of the common genetically engineered crops include soya beans, canola, corn and cotton. The US Food and Drug Administration policy on the labeling of GM food requires labeling is the food has significantly distinct nutritional property (US FDA par 2). Further, labeling is required if the GM food product includes an allergen that consumers may not expect to find in such a product, or if the product contains a toxicant that is beyond acceptable limits (US FDA par 3).
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an agency within the US Department of Health and Health Service, which is apart of the federal executive branch. In June 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt signed into law the Food and Drug Act, known as “The Wiley Act”after its chief advocate. It was not known by its present name until 1930.
There are two modern Food and Drug Administration (FDA) actions that are important to review and their impact today; the Prescription Drug User Fee Act passed in 1992, and the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act passed in 1997. Under the Prescription Drug User Fee Act, the FDA was authorized to “collect fees from pharmaceutical companies to review their drug applications” (Shi, 2016). This fee collection process shortens the time for new drug approvals and allows the FDA to make the drugs available for use much sooner. Congress went a step further by with the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act that provides for
When it comes to the topic of whether Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO) are safe or not, most of us will readily agree that it has become an issue. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of is it really safe to consume them. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are safe and improve the production of crops, others maintain that GMOs are not safe and should be eradicated. I disagree that GMOs are safe for human consumption because as a recent research has shown they can cause severe organ damage and fatal diseases. GMOs should be banned and remove from all food sources until they are proved safe for consumption.
As the years, products, and medical advancements progress so has regulations, but what surprised me is that these tragedies that had to be the means of creating the FDA to what it is today. The first event that was mentioned was the public outcry regarding the chemical foods and phony medications that were being sold. In discovery of the way these necessities for the population were being handled it made me think that those handling the products were all about the money. I understand that things happen and they were trying to accommodate more people, or better products but of you see a problem address it, it’s disappointing in learning the facts about these issues, and how they were not address until the people demanded a change.
Genetically modified organisms should be labeled because all of the health risks are still unknown. According to the article, GMO Foods Should be Labeled by Ajita White, they state, “Specific engineered
Foremost in the arguments concerning GM foods are the practices and standards of labeling. Currently sixty four countries require mandatory labeling of these products. The United States is not one of these countries that require mandatory labeling. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is currently using a very lenient standard for informing consumers according to
Should genetically modified foods be labeled? Some think GMOs are completely safe and labeling the food would prove unnecessary and will make food increase in price, while others believe we have a right to know everything in the food the population consume. Nearly all processed food sold in the United States were genetically modified in a lab. GMOs are often used to achieve a certain trait, such as drought tolerance, enhanced nutritional content, insect resistance, and reduced food waste. More than 15 countries have stated labeling genetically modified foods, starting with the Europe Union in 1997. While GMOs can be used for positive reasons, but can have a negative effect (list negative effects of GMOs). This paper will explain side with
GMO’s have so many myths behind them and though some of the rumors out there may be true others are not. A big rumor out there is that GMO’s cause cancer and allergies. As the world makes many strides in the medical fields we are noticing many diet related medical problems and of course they are blamed on GMO’s, but is this assumption fair? There is a possibility that because we are extracting genes from one organism and placing it in another there are risks involved causing toxins and allergens to be expressed. However the foods that are produced that are placed on the market go through extensive testing through the Federal Drug Administration and if they feel the product is too toxic for consumption it will not be placed on the market. Another
‘Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally, e.g. through the introduction of a gene from a different organism. Currently, available GM foods stem mostly from plants, but in the future foods derived from GM microorganisms or GM animals are likely to be introduced on the market. Most existing genetically modified crops have been developed to improve yield, through the introduction of resistance to plant diseases or of increased tolerance of herbicides.’ (WHO,2015)
