This aspect of the film relied heavily upon a series of psychological counselling techniques, ranging from one psychologist’s failed attempt to establish a repertoire with Will, to another’s Freudian methods of hypnosis and psychoanalytic analysis of Will’s stream of consciousness (Allen, 2006, pp. 21-22). As Will repeatedly proved to be uncooperative with these psychologists, Professor Lambeau decided to employ the help of a past colleague and friend of his named Sean Maguire. Sean was uncertain as to how well he would be able to help Will, but he eventually decided to work with him and hoped to be successful in determining the reasons behind the aggressive and impulsive dynamics of Will’s personality. Upon first meeting Sean, Will clearly began to treat this new psychologist in the same manner as was previously observed from his past psychological evaluations. Curiously, Will suddenly pointed out a painting in Sean’s office and began analyzing Sean’s life in light of this arbitrary work of art. This was an instance which strongly reflected Murray’s theory of personality as being based on a series of underlying themes that are present in one’s life story (Allen, 2006, pp. 368, 370). Such observations were often extracted by Murray in light of his clients’ narratives based upon arbitrary images which depicted a scene with relatively vague content. The goal of this test, known as the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), were designed to evoke the “themas” present within a
The decision to take this course was rooted in a deepening interest in psychotherapy, self–development, the welfare of other people and in a desire to gain a theoretical base to enrich my current arts and health practice.

The counselling process is based on the exchange of emotions between the client and the counsellor which aims to form an alliance (Hough, 1998). It involves the counsellor using skills in which they possess in order to communicate effectively with clients (Hough, 1998). This reflective essay clearly articulates my application of counselling skills used in this practice session and suggestions for improvement. It will provide a summary of the session, identification of a range of skills used and a brief explanation of the reasons for using the skill. It will also provide an evaluation of my application of the skills chosen, including verbatim examples, suggestions for improvement, also including verbatim examples to demonstrate what could
Throughout these sessions the promise of a higher education or success is shadowed by the aggression that Will Hunting has to over come. Very defensive and isolated Will Hunting is befriended very slowly by Sean McGuire to open up his emotional problem and to let them go. Will Hunting’s inability to trust, love and communicate handicaps him to do well in life with careers and relationships.
This essay is an evaluation of two counselling models applied to a situation where a client has experienced loss and how a counsellor can create a therapeutic relationship with the client using each counselling model. It will also contain other skills a counsellor could use to obtain/maintain a good therapeutic relationship with the client.
Professor Lambeau arranges for this to happen but Will’s emotional instability requires him to attend therapy sessions with psychologist Sean McGuire whose background turns out to be very similar with Will. Hunting blames himself for his unhappy upbringing and turns his hatred into a form of self-sabotage in his lives. As a result, he is unable to maintain a relationship or job so he must overcome
After several therapy sessions, many of the therapist would not take Will due to his foolishness. This was a problem for Lambeau so he went to seek an old friend who was willingly to accept Will as a occupation. Sean is the therapist who was willing to take in Will even when he was hurt by Will’s word about his deceased wife.
For the nature of the approach that I would like to adopt a combination of approaches during the counseling, which might include person-centered approach, behavioral approach, and/ or slightly include cognitive approach too.
The aim of this assignment is to compare and contrast two theories or theorists of counselling from psychodynamic, humanistic or cognitive behavioural traditions and also to assess their strengths and weaknesses. This essay will focus on exploring the contrasting ideas and approaches of Carl Rogers who is a key figure associated with the person-centered approach and Fritz Perls who developed Gestalt therapy. Although they are both regarded as humanistic counsellors, they share a very different approach when working with clients. I have chosen to analyse these two theorists because of their contrasting styles, in particular my curiosity was sparked after viewing both Perls and Rogers sessions with Gloria. I found it fascinating how such different styles could still be successful in therapy. In particular fritz perls style really grabbed my attention as at first, I was really put off by his seemingly rude demeanour. However, after reading information on gestalt therapy and the ideas behind it I started to understand how it works.
He saw five therapists with whom he failed to connect, prior to seeing Sean Maguire. He terminated himself from some of his previous therapy sessions. Two of his therapists walked out on him. Will accused his first therapist of being gay and played his second therapy by pretending to be hypnotized. He was institutionalized for most of his childhood years. He spoke of his three close
Will does extremely well in the math sessions with Lambeau; however, he is averse to seeing a therapist, and quickly drives off several well known therapists whom Lambeau has arranged for him to see. On the verge of giving up, Lambeau takes Will to meet his former college roommate, a psychologist, Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), who teaches at Bunker Hill Community College, to mostly uninterested, uninspired students.
For this essay there will be a critical evaluation of the counselling approaches and skills that are used which can guide the practice of education professionals and benefit relationships with children/ young people in supporting their social and emotional well-being. The approaches that will be looked at and compared are the Person-centred approach and the Psychodynamic approach. The approaches will be discussed and linked to the use in an educational context by teachers with children and young people. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches will also be examined. It is important for teacher to support children and young people’s social and emotional development right for the start of their educational experiences in the early years. The statutory frame work for the early years published by the department for education in 2014 makes sure that every practitioner follows by law the learning and development requirements of every child. The DFE 2014 suggests educational programs have to include activities and experiences involving the children as suggested: personal social and emotional development entails assisting children to develop an encouraging view of themselves, and others; to make positive relationships and develop respect for others, progress on their social skills and acquire the skill how to deal and control their feelings, to know how to behaviour correctly in groups and to have self confidence in what they can do. From this practitioners can pick up on
People who experience troubles can receive help for their problems in both formal and informal ways. An informal helping relationship can be as simple as a chat with a friend while offering advice and support. The counselling approach differs considerably form formal counselling which this essay will discuss.
Finally there is Sean Maguire. Sean is Will’s therapist after he is sentenced to either therapy or jail. Sean teaches psychology at a community college in Boston and also had a tough upbringing. Sean has generally been lost and unhappy since his wife passed years ago. Professor Lambeau and Sean used to be old college roommates and Professor Lambeau is the one who refers Sean as a therapist for Will.
Moreover, Sean wasn’t Will’s first option. Will saw several other psychologist who refuse to see him again, because of his attitude. However, when he starts going to therapy sessions with Sean everything changes. Even after meeting psychologist after psychologist Will still didn’t want to open up. In fact, his first therapy session with Sean was like his other therapy sessions with a carefree and immature attitude. In his first therapy session Sean says, “Do you like books?” Will responds, “Yeah”
