After viewing episodes of " Criminal Minds" and "Special Victims Unit" I found it hard to decide which episode to discuss as the episodes in both shows are actors, actresses, victims, and the criminals are just portraying a scene that they are being paid to "act" without knowledge, experience, or any qualifications on psychology. They are all character's in a TV show used for entertainment, not for learning. My guess would be that they have no idea what the ethical or unethical codes are since they are not neccessary for their profession in acting. In my opinion these TV shows are not realistic. Psychologists, and therapists take their job seriousely and adhere to their boundaries and code of ethics which they have knowledge and training to help others in a professional manner.
According to the website https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/fulfillment-any-age/201203/we-re-not-psychologists-we-play-them-television it states:

After all, bringing psychology out into the media should be a good thing. At least we're talking openly about mental health problems instead of trying to keep them hidden. Unfortunately, the effect is less than sanguine. Viewers may get a good laugh out of watching an emotionally crippled therapist. However, they're not then going to be particularly likely to pick up the phone and call their nearest professionals after seeing how prone they are to meltdowns. After all, why would you seek therapy from a professional who you imagine is in even worse shape than
lawyer, how do we know if he is not like that towards other clients and judges. I understand that people get emotional when things like divorce and custody arises and things can get out of hand, but in this case, I feel he went a little overboard only thinking about himself and not considering the consequences this all had on his ex wife and minor child. He was definitely unprofessional and even one of the judges said “ if someone asks me what vexatious litigation looks like, the former husband's various filings in this divorce case, especially his antics in these post judgment proceedings, are an excellent example” (Judge Farmer, 1997). Judges and lawyers have a higher standard to go by, if this type of action is not tolerated when representing a client, then it definitely should not be tolerated by a lawyer in his own case.
In today’s psychology profession, a therapist and even the client can cross many boundaries if immediate boundaries are not put into place during the initial visit. Some boundaries that are crossed are not a problem at first and then the problem progresses. Leonard L. Glass called these, “the gray areas of boundary crossing and violation” (429). However, there is further description, “Boundary issues mostly refer to the therapist's self-disclosure, touch, an exchange of gifts, bartering and fees, length and location of sessions and contact outside the office” (Guthiel & Gabbard). This statement by Thomas G. Gutheil, M.D. & Glen O. Gabbard, M.D explains the meaning of boundary
Not only does it discourage people who need help from seeking it out, but alsomaking a mockery of therapists and their profession. Therapy is an extremely valuable tool in understanding and overcoming mental illness, and is a healthy way to vent when in a high-stress environment. The University of California – Los Angeles (2007) found that “verbalizing our feelings makes our sadness, anger and pain less intense,” which is the main focus of psychiatry, to talk it out (p.
You have a really good post. Ethics codes are important to have so there can be boundaries. Ethics codes are rules and regulations for services to keep both the client and worker safe. Human services are supposed to follow these guidelines to give the best and proper care that the individual or family needs. They have broad range of skill the caseworker can use to help by following the guidelines (Martin, 2014). If a worker goes over the boundaries by breaking a rule he or she can lose her job and even license. The Bible verses that you chose are really good one that can relate back to human services code of ethics. The Bible is full of guidelines and understandings on how we should treat one another. One big difference human service
However, ethics codes have been criticized. APA ethics code have been criticized for being more protective of the profession than of the consumer (Kitchener & Anderson, 2010). Criticism has also been given because more emphasis of concern has been placed on protecting psychologists from legal liabilities than with instilling ethical ideals (Kitchener & Anderson, 2010). A limitation of ethical codes is that it does not address many important ethical concerns. The text provides an example regarding questions of justice, such as access to psychological or counseling services. This is not generally covered in ethical standards. In addition, other areas not covered include issues pertaining to the rights of consumers or research participants. For many decades focus on research for the APA has been to establish standards that are enforceable when psychologists are accused of unethical behavior. Kitchener and Anderson (2010) suggest that this focus on identifying activities that have restricted activities has distracted the APA from applying more positive ethical
Another ethical issue is competence. A clinical psychologist must provide services for the area that he or she is specialized in. The psychologist must also maintain competence in whichever area they specialize. This means that the psychologist must stay up to date in their field and have appropriate training, skills, and continuing education (Plante, 2011).
I believe as a profession it is important for all psychologists to have a set of standards that all individuals should strive to meet, for this profession it is the APA Code of Ethics. Having all psychologists aspire to an ethical code gives all psychologists a sense of unity, this is particularly important when the field is so vast and includes so many different careers, especially those in the helping profession. Most importantly it is essential to have a set of ethical standards that must be followed whenever work is being completed with humans. I do not necessarily believe that one particular code of ethics would be better than another. For example, if psychologists instead followed the AU’s core values that would be acceptable so long
There is great debate over psychologist’s roles and violation of their code of ethics in this category. For example, psychologists are used to observe and provide feedback on interrogations. Issues have developed where the psychologist provided confidential medical information on the detainee to interrogators to help find ways
The purpose of this paper is to compare the experiences in my practicum to the ethical issues addressed in American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. According to 2014 ACA Code of Ethics, “the mission of the American Counseling Association is to enhance the quality of life in society by promoting the development of professional counselors, advancing the counseling profession, and using the profession and practice of counseling to promote respect for human dignity and diversity” (p. 2). In the ACA Code of Ethics, there are six main purposes identified. The six identified purposes are: 1) The Code set forth the ethical obligations of ACA members and provides guidance intended to inform the ethical practices of professional counselors. 2)
According to the ethical and legal principles of the counseling profession, it is our morally professional responsibility to break confidentiality in order to eliminate the possibilities of chaos, to the best of our ability. The American Counseling Association (ACA) code of ethics explains adherence to confidentiality in a number of instances. In standard A.2.e., Mandated Clients, it describes the requirements for informing mandated clients of the limitations to confidentiality and, should an issue arise, to whom the revealed information must be shared with. This rule applies to all clients. The counselor’s responsibility to do so must be conveyed to the clients at the very beginning of the counseling relationship, with periodic reminders throughout sessions, and include the dangers involved if the client refuses to participate in the mandated sessions. ACA code of ethics further explains in standard B.1.c., Respect for Confidentiality, that counselors are to guard “confidential information” and “disclose” this “information only with appropriate consent or with sound legal or ethical jurisdiction.” Therapists must also “identify situations” where breaches can void or challenge confidentiality (ACA, 2014, B.1.d., p. 7).
The ethical codes are strictly regulated to ensure that members providing and the individuals receiving the psychological services are protected against any violations that may cause physical or emotional harm (Code of Ethics, 2007). However, in cases where breach of conducts is found, the psychologist is obliged to report; also the colleagues of the psychologist is authorised to report without fear of breaking the code of ethics (Code of Ethics). To foster an ethical environment in a professional psychological service, all psychologists must uphold the same ethical standards because they have been entrusted to care for some of the most vulnerable individuals (Furman, Downey & Jackson, 2004). For suggestions, Dr Ida should have taken actions immediately when an ethical problem is identified. By beginning to identify the ethical issue, she can consult her peers and supervisors, in order to determine the ethical trap possibilities and critically examining the possible consequences, so that an appropriate ethical resolution can be carried out (Steinman, Richardson & McEnroe, 1998; Miner, 2006).
As I enter training as a professional in psychology, personal values that I will bring are trustworthiness, empathy, listening skills, openness, and beneficence. During training I will make sure to practice what I have learned so when the time comes for me to serve clients in the real professional settings, I will have the skills to apply. I believe that these values align with the code of ethics because they are part of the foundation needed to build a therapeutic relationship with clients and understand their situations. By building a therapeutic relationship with clients, effective objectives and goals can then be put into place to begin the process of recovery. As I work with clients, their needs will be my priority and all my efforts
"Our results indicate that the informal methods ("manager sets an example" or "social norms of the organization") are likely to yield greater commitment with respect to both employee attitudes than formal methods ("training courses on the subject of ethics") (Adam, et al, 2004).
Our country was founded on certain moral principles. The moral principles which guide our lives are referred to as ethics. These ethics have an impact on how we interact with the world around us and shape our personalities; this happens even if we do not realize their immediate impact. It is for this very reason that ethics in psychological research became necessary. “One may also define ethics as a method, procedure, or perspective for deciding how to act and for analyzing complex problems and issues” (Resnik, 2011). We are expected to behave or be treated a particular way in society, therefore we should be granted certain ethical treatments in regards to research.
In this case, the psychologist is presented with several ethical issues which could cause harm to the client. The first ethical issue that arose in this case is the potential for a role conflict. The psychologist and Mr. Hartwig had contact prior to the development of a therapeutic relationship when the psychologist bought a car from Mr. Hartwig. It may not be enough that the brief, informal relationship ended. The psychologist must assess the dimensions of the previous relationship from the viewpoint of the client as well as his/her own personal feelings (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2008). For example, the client could feel that he gave the psychologist a good deal and that the psychologist was indebted to him. This could leave the
