Women and men are viewed differently since the beginning of time. The men were to be said the “head” of the house; they worked outside the house and brought bread to his family; while the women stayed inside their homes and did their chores and raised the children. The men had the privileges of studying and voting, but the women had to work hard to earn those privileges. Since beginning of time, woman was seen as the “weak link”, someone who did not have power over men, lead, think for herself or speak up. Nowadays, that has changed. Women are successful in whatever they do, they lead, they work, they vote; yet they still are viewed differently than men. In Puerto Rico, or in any other place, society plays a big role on how we view men
* Gender Roles in Puerto Rico have become more progressive in recent years, however the topical gender roles are traditional. Boys are boys and girls are girls. Recently a new governor was elected, Gloria Ruiz Kuilan,a reporter from " El Nuevo Dia" characterizes the recent outcry from LGBT community that wished to challenge the typical traditional ideas of the school system. Even still, the overall consensus in schools are that gender roles are more conservative.
Women throughout time have experienced position changes more times than can be counted. Not just in modern times, gender roles began in the B.C.E era. In Egypt and India, gender roles were a huge part of society. In both locations, male’s word was law. What they said was the final answer and a woman could not change that. The gender distinctions were similar in ways that women had minimal power in familiar locations, like their homes. They had a small opinion about certain subjects, but they never ventured out of the comfort zone of subjects they were allowed to discuss. Men were treated better than women, yes, but the power women held was used for some of the most important topics.
The cultural topic that our class looked at was the impact gender roles have in Latin American communities. Machismo was one specific gender role that was highly discussed in our interactive oral. The articles that we were provided with talked a lot about the idea of machismo, more specifically how it impacts the way men act and feel in Latin American societies. Machismo can be defined as the social expectations that men have in Latin American societies. Expectations for men are things such as being masculine and not showing weakness by going to the doctor. Men can also almost do whatever they want sexually in a machismo society and not receive any consequences. Last but not least, one of the most important expectations in a machismo society
Generally, women are seen as weak and fragile and not able to deal with much on their own. In some ways, this is true, even
For many years women have tried finding their place in society, which is hard when males are usually perceived as the leaders or ones who control their wives.
There are many different cultures with vast differences throughout the world however most of them share the same fundamental ideal that women are the inferior gender and men are the superior ones. As Mary Wollstonecraft states in A Vindication of the Rights of Women men think of women as being “created to be the toy of man, his rattle, and it must jingle in his ears whenever, dismissing reason, he chooses to be amused” (cite pg 372). Ancient historical documents portray the domination and suppression of women by men in almost every civilization that has existed. While there are clearly physical and emotional differences between men and women why do most men consider women to be less than and most women consider men to be superior? As times have progressed women have had opportunities to show that women are in fact not the inferior sex but are indeed equal to men however there are still fundamental differences that separate us.
Throughout the course of human existence, there has been a clear division line that defines the gender roles that have been followed. History has taught us many things and included within that list is inequality. Men and women haven 't been treated equality for many years in the past, but the good thing is that now, women have at least a little bit more justice done towards them. Although throughout time in recorded history, women have shown and proved not only through words but most importantly through actions that we are all capable and and brave human beings that deserve the same rights that the men possess. There have been many books, movies, and play in which women are portrayed in many different ways.
Throughout history, women have always been seen as a less important piece in the role of politics, economy and even in society. Many times the woman is seeing as not capable enough human beings to do certain jobs, and while men were out studying or working, women were just useful to raise children and being killed at the age of 45 because she had already given birth, cleaning or just to look beautiful.
From the beginning of time men were the ones that held the power. We never had anybody to challenge that power. Even through the events of the eighteenth century and through the nineteenth century men did everything. Women was the one that stayed at home and made sure that the house was kept up and there was cooked food on the table. Only recently in this last century has women made the charge to change that outlook. It took world war two for people
Women have always been suppressed within society. Expanding from the end of the hunter-gathering era, women slowly started to lose the little-to-nothing social influence they had. It has been a struggle for women to gain power, let alone respect. Equality between both genders is quite rare. It has become a universal social construct that males are the dominant race. In fact, societies have been built where males have most, if not, total power compared to women. Although there have been a handful of female rulers, there has never been constant female domination. If females did have any type of power, it was through a male superiority complex. After hunter-gathering societies evolved into agricultural societies, women started to be affected
Throughout the past century women have evolved greatly and the way people have thought of women has also changed greatly. From not having the the right to vote, to having a place in the workplace, to becoming heads of companies. Although these changes took almost a century, they did not come easy and women still continue to struggle with people thinking less of them due to the gender.
Women are most likely to be discriminated for their gender and are made less than man in any type of activity in society. The men usually tries to make the women feel bad about their gender by telling them that they are not worth anything but in reality if a women decides to she can overcome all the obstacles even better than a men. Women are also different than men in the way they interact with each other (physically and socially). According to the author “In public places, men touch women more often than women touch men. Men also touch women in more places on the body than women touch men” (Andersen, 2015, pg.3). In our society the women’s reputation is always questioned or put to risk when performing any type of action. In many cultures
Women have always been looked upon as property rather than people. They have been told that they are lesser beings and must find the perfect man to depend on and start a family since the beginning of history. “Give a man what he wants in order to live a happy life” is a phrase many elderly women tell young women. Men have always been seen as independent while wanting a wife to cook, clean, and provide a family. Men today continuously make rash and sexist comments about women needing to be in the kitchen cooking or taking care of the kids rather than pursuing a career. Sexism is “prejudice or discrimination based on sex, especially against women” (Merriam Webster, “Sexism”). Despite extensive research into the human mind and body, many people continue to believe women are inferior compared to men.
For many years, women have been considered inferior to men and, as a consequence, they have been subservient to men and to their own families. For instance, they had to be chaste, obedient, sympathetic, powerless, they could not go out when they wanted or dressed as they liked, but they were expected to stay at home and dedicated themselves to the education of children and to the domestic cleaning.
Women have faced major discrimination when it comes to work and sometimes in education. Women decades ago had a wide range of opportunities denied to them due to their sex. Women have always been looked upon as the weaker sex and men as stronger and as the rulers. Women years ago were not seen as individuals, they were basically their husband’s slaves. Women were the ones to stay home, make dinner for their cranky and tired husband, look after their children, clean the house and answer to their husband. It was pretty safe to say that women were never the ones that over ruled this society, but “there have been huge changes…” (182) in gender equality. Gender equality has changed dramatically over the years and the shift
