I have always been interested in the healthcare profession, and as I got older I fully understood and admired what it meant to be in this field. The fact that I will be able to work with a large variety of people and help them directly has always drawn me to healthcare. The idea that I will be responsible for people physically getting better and witnessing it at the same time is beautiful, and there is truly no better joy. I have always enjoyed science class as well, and when I entered high school I began to take medical classes at Ben Barber Academy. Every year I made sure to further my knowledge in the field and every year I fell even more in love with it. Throughout high school I have taken CPR and first aid classes, pathophysiology, anatomy,
The first time I realized I wanted to specialize in medicine was when my father took me to the fire station when I was around the age of fourteen. He began to show me images of different cases and trauma scenes they had participated in. Since then, I have constantly asked my dad questions about different calls and scenarios about patients he has rescued. By having a father in the medical field and continuing to take science and medical courses throughout high school, I began to learn more about medicine throughout the years. Deciding to partake in these courses further advanced my understanding in medicine. These courses helped it become clear to me that the medical field is something I continuously
Biology has always intrigued me; that is why I took advanced biology courses every year during high school. I chose cardiology in particular for medical school because cardiac diseases run in both sides of my family. I have seen my grandmothers get pushed into the emergency rooms and I thought they were not going
After my observations, I have learned a lot about how the the medical aspect of the health care system worked. I always had the mindset that the doctors were the ones who ran everything in a hospital or a clinic. Upon observing, I realized that this was false and that it took teamwork, cooperation, and communication to help create an environment to best serve its patients. When I came into the University of Michigan as well as the Health Sciences Scholar Program, I had set my target to go into family medicine in order to pursue a career as a family physician. I also saw that there were many health disparities and inequities among patients in hospitals as well. I thought maybe I could help fix this if I became a physician. After my observations, I had an ambivalent feeling if I should still continue with what my heart was set on. I never really thought about exploring the vast array of other health-related professions. There were many fields of health professions I had really never thought about and this class as well as my observations had really helped open my eyes to the complexity of the health system to make it work.
Although science has been my favorite subject in school for as long as I can remember, my passion for medicine started in fourth grade, after I spent three weeks in the hospital. The doctors and nurses were so good at explaining what was going on inside my body, and I learned so much about medicine and myself. It really improved my healing process knowing what was happening and how I could make myself feel better. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted a career helping others feel the same way. So, I met with my father’s friend, who was an anesthesiologist, to discuss all the options that are available in the medical field. After he listened to some of my interests and dreams for my future, he said that he thought
While interning in the Children's Clinic, I had the incredible opportunity to go and visit the NICU. This program had also introduced me how to write a medical research paper. Mini med school gave me a lot of informative information everyday by health professions which they discussed about the ongoing medical issues and other problems like drug use and criminal issues our community is facing. I have also taken classes in High School such as Ap Biology, Ap chemistry, and AP Psychology that exposes me to everyday medical terminology that health professionals use. Information offered by these classes made it easier to communicate and understand doctors.I have taken every opportunity to better prepare myself to the challenges of the medical field. During the internship, I mainly focused on the nursing branch, I shadowed nurse practitioners and registered nurses in action and how they handled medical issues and was also given the opportunity to learn and ask about their challenges in nursing school and how they had overcome it. I was able to learn about the responsibilities and special skills required to be a nurse and received advices from the nurses on how to be successful in nursing school. I have also been self studying Human Physiology and Anatomy. Its the medical field that best describes me. I love to give back to my
One of the cool parts of the medical field is the diversity. There are so many different choices and careers a person can branch off into. Take a look at the nursing field alone. There are so many specialties within nursing to take. It's really interesting to see how a person can easily customize their medical career to their personality and personal goals.
Based off this information I had decided that nursing was not for me. Long hours and demanding, uncooperative patients was not appealing to me. As for other medical fields, nothing stuck with me, my senior year in high school I considered pathology, but the more I researched the more I became uninterested. Back to the drawing board it was, until that first ultrasound I went to with my friend. As I researched I became more interested and learned that sonography is more than just OB/GYN, there is so much more to learn and explore.
Intro to Health Occupations opened my eyes to the many, many amazing healthcare career choices that there are. After completing a two week long career project, I was certain that my answer to the question was, “I want to be a physician’s assistant!” I have seen how much healthcare workers have positively impacted people, and that also really helped me to figure out “what I want to be when I grow up.”
After being taking anatomy during my junior year of high school, I realized that I enjoy learning about the human body. As time went on I started to realize that I enjoy helping people and taking care of people. Eventually, I realized that I really wanted to be a
The only consistency in my career plans as I grew up was that they all involved science, not that I noticed this at first. However, as I got into high school, and started taking classes such as biology and anatomy, I realised that these were the topics that truly interested me, and they helped me to realise that I wanted to do something in the medical field, although I still was not sure what. The sound of a doctor interested me, but I didn’t want to spend that much time in college and I could not see myself in a hospital setting. Not until I read the description of a physician assistant, did any job really seem to suit me. With similar responsibilities to a physician, but less schooling and a lower percent that work in hospitals, it checked off all the boxes I was looking for in a job.
My interest in Health Sciences started in 2013, my freshman year at Health Sciences High and Middle College (HSHMC). Prior to high school, I wasn’t sure what my passion is life was and every time someone would ask “What do you want to do when you grow up?” it was followed with a bow of the head and a shoulder shrug. As I moved into high school, I was offered an internship at SHARP Memorial Hospital and I decided that if I wanted to go into healthcare I would only know if I tried. My second internship at SHARP Mary Birch really started my love for health care and was the spark of a future career that I would make me smile when answering the aforementioned question. Health Occupations Students of America: Future Health Professionals has helped me work toward my goal in more ways than one.
Growing up, I wanted nothing to do at all with anything medical. I thought blood was disgusting, even tiny little paper cuts completely grossed me out. Instead, I wanted to be a teacher, more specifically, a kindergarten or first grade teacher. When my little sister and I played school I was always the teacher. I was determined that no matter what, I was going to be a teacher. During a seventh grade biology class, I became fascinated with the human body. I thought it was amazing how all the little bits and pieces of the body work together. That biology class changed my
I went through medicine and did choose Pediatrics as the field that took all my senses and found myself the most in it. Here at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, I did my 4 year residency program; we do the Emergency rotation 1 month each year of residency. Since that time, I find myself attracted to this field of medicine
Healthcare has many different areas one can go into if interested in this field. I have chosen two that have always been an interest to me; Nursing (particularly registered nursing) and an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). Both jobs are very demanding and extremely important. Both are respected jobs and require a tremendous amount of caring for others.
I have always been interested in science, especially biology. However, I never saw myself doing a career in a health field until one of my closest aunts was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. After her diagnosis , I devoted myself to taking care of her as I was the only one available to stay with her. After accompanying her during each of her therapy sessions, I discovered an interest in Physical Therapy and saw myself disposed to helping others with mobility problems such as those my aunt experienced.
