Situated in New York, especially in Harlem, the narrator of Invisible Man felt the effects of large amounts of racism and adversity. According to Alexander LaFosta, researcher of social standings in the 1930?s, racism was largely prevalent across most of America. African Americans had a very difficult time finding jobs, were forced to live in very cramped spaces, and were subjected to piteous education standards. The narrator lived in a time in which people like him were looked down upon. He was not treated respectfully, and that had a profound psychological effect on him. Consequently, his assumption that he was not entirely seen was justified because of the society he lived in.

An example of the narrator’s invisibility is his belief that he is nothing without light. “Without light I am not only invisible, but formless as ... well; and to be unaware of one's form is to live a death. Random House published Invisible Man in 1952. The story is told from the perspective of a black man on the intellectual and social issues facing the African-Americans in the early twentieth century. Because of his coloring, he is treated as invisible, and – consequently – struggles with his individuality and personal identity the whole of the novel. At the outset of the book, the narrator mainly relies on others to determine his identity. He is easily swayed, easily persuaded, and – in essence – a real yes-man. However, as the novel progresses, he becomes engrossed in the racial, reformist movements of the twentieth century, growing more self-aware and out-spoken. The narrator comes in contact with 3 main characters that greatly shape his life and make him the invisible man that he is.       Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man was published at a time when America was racially divided.  The novel presents the theme of the lack of black identity – a theme supported by the fact that the protagonist, Invisible Man, has no name.  The reader knows the names of Dr. Bledsoe, Ras-the-Exhorter, Brother Jack and others - but the reader does not know the name of the main character.  Ellison's leaves it to the reader to decide who he is and, on a larger scale, how white America perceives black America.

In Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, it talks about how the man in the story has struggled to accept who he is, and how he is seen by other’s around him. This girl comes up to him and tells him about a terrible and evil dream she had, showing him that he can accept himself when others don’t need too. He says in the story, “I myself, after existing some twenty years, did not become alive until I discover my invisibility.” (Ellison 4) By him understanding that invisibility is not only within himself, but with those all around him, he knows that he can try to overcome it. Which is how a girl in a religious family relies on those around her.
