The United States was changing in the 1800’s. Many settlers moved to the west, populating the plains. For many Americans, the movement westward brought new economic opportunities, but for others it meant conflict and a way of life.

1. How can an understanding of the complexities of culture help us make sense of the day-to-day world which we live? Give an example from your life to illustrate your answer.

The early 1800’s were no different, America being finally free from British domination, was ready and able to forge its own way. This time while America was still in her infancy, was an important pivot point in our country and where it was headed. Warranted by the situation

The early 1800’s was a very important time for America. The small country was quickly expanding. With the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition, America almost tripled in size by 1853. However, even with the amount of land growing, not everyone was welcomed with open arms. With the expansion of the country, the white Americans decided that they needed the Natives out.

During the time between 1800 and 1850, America was going through a great change. A revolution began, which shaped the way people live their lives. This alteration in American society was known as the Market Revolution. Changes were seen within areas such as transportation and communication. From 1800-1850, the Market Revolution caused major change in America as it introduced new inventions such as steamboats, and telegraphs that significantly impacted the way we communicate and travel.

Throughout the 1800s, the United States made advancements as a nation. The expansion of territory towards the West brought new beginnings for some citizens and an increase in nationalism of the country. But, it also caused problems. This once unified country started to show a prominent divide of two regions, the North, states in the Northeast of the country, and the South, states in the Southeast and South of the country. At first, it was not as visible, but started to show when slavery was more dominant in the Southern states and decreasing in the Northern states.

The early decades of the 1800’s fostered significant political changes (Schultz, 2009). The American politics were becoming more democratic, which resulted in historians referring to this part of history as the “the era of the common man.” The political changes of the early 1800’s were significantly impacted by the following four reasons: economic booms and busts, expansion of vote, presidential election of 1824, and the second two-party system.

The late 1800’s were a booming time for the United States. Reconstruction had ended and Westward Expansion was on the rise. People from all over the U.S. were moving west and claiming land and many groups from across the world made their way to the United States to find new opportunity and to escape oppression. This led to a huge growth in diversity in the United State and helped make a major impact on what we consider to be the modern united states. Everything from the economy to social groups were affected by this and this led to some interesting outcomes in our country. It is therefore easy to notice factional differences in relation to regional differences. The South was already worried about the survival of their institution of slavery, as from the onset of the creation of the National Government already what they viewed as Northern interests were being advocated in Congress, they and their were not then as eagerly represented in Congress as they would have liked to be.

During the years of the 1800’s there were many technological, social and political developments in America. The country experienced growth through the Industrial Revolution, slavery and the women’s rights movement all in one century. The nation experienced reforms, utopian societies and compromises all in pursuit of a “perfect” America. All of the inventions, movements and amendments of the 1800’s helped shape America’s industry, government and society, overall shaping the United States.

There were many changes in the 1800’s when it came to politics. Changes were needed especially since the New World finally had their freedom. People had to change to be able to go along with the needed political changes that were put upon them by their new government. Some would say this was a better way of life for the people, and the reasons for the changes was to create a better way of life for everyone financially so their family would be taken care of.

During the early 19th century, especially before the American Revolution and after the War of 1812, American society has changed greatly. The North and the South followed different paths, gradually developing into two distinct and very different regions. And in the 1800s, the disparities between the two regions because of the difference in economic, social and political structure, continued to widen leading up to the Civil War that raged across the nation from 1861 to 1865 which concluded the decades of diverse ideas and culture between the two regions. The South’s economic were known vastly for its agriculture and farming. Its fertile soil and warm climate were ideal for large-scale farms and crops like tobacco and cotton.

In conclusion, the U.S has changed so dramatically from 1787 to 1860. It changed physically from only thirteen colonies to a whole 50 state country. It also changed socially from small population to millions of people. Lastly, America changed politically by starting having federalists and anti-federalists to having republicans and democrats, also it starting out as Articles of Confederation to a Republic to a Democracy. American culture refers to the traditions and practices of the people of the United States. Culture comprises of the nature of buildings, religion, music language and marriage. The population of the United States is more than 320 million people making it the most culturally diverse country in the globe. Books such as Crabgrass Frontier, Manifest Destination and Muscular Christianity are important sources of information about American culture. This paper is a reflection on the methods that these books use in providing information about the evolution of the US culture. The paper examines the relationship between these three sources and ways they challenge or inform an understanding of the American society during the late 19th and early 20th century. There is an analysis of the efficiency of the issues tackled by these books in influencing the contemporary discourse surrounding American culture. The major argument of this paper is that Crabgrass Frontier, Manifest Destination and Muscular Christianity provide reliable information about the evolution of the US culture and they supplement each other through the use of relevant examples.

The United States of America being the third largest country in the world with more than 315 million inhabitants, consists of multicultural societies with ethnically diverse population. Since there are a lot of foreigners, the US culture has evolved in such a way accepting and tolerating other foreign cultures. US is very much influenced by protestant work ethics according to which people believe in themselves and their efforts to attain the goal of self-actualization and success. The rich diversity in the culture brought by foreigners, prevailing values of protestant ethics, hard work etc. have helped US to emerge as a superpower in the past years. Nearly every religion had its impact on US culture in one way or the other. The
