“[T]he core of racism essentially includes a prejudiced sense of superiority…Individual racism occurs when individuals discriminate against members of another racial group because they believe that their own group is superior” (Utsey, Ponterotto, & Porter, 2008, p. 339). The chain is only as strong as its weakest link in a military service. Racism, prejudice, and discrimination are kinks in the moral integrity of the chain that have negative effects on employee morale and the service’s reputation. In September of 2007, Admiral Allen released an “All Hands Message” to the fleet summarizing the noose incidents. Furthermore, the message announced the investigation by CGIS and explained Admiral Allen’s stance on the racial incident (Allen, 2007). Admiral Allen stood firm, writing that racist conduct goes against the USCG’s core values and will never go unchallenged (Allen, 2007). All members of the staff should feel safe in their work environment. Discrimination in the workplace may cause the victim to feel unsafe, so it is the manager’s responsibility to help make them feel whole again. Investigating the act and punishing the offender can be part of the victim’s healing process. The requirement of immediate action also shows other staff members that leadership will not tolerate further actions in the workplace. Also, it is an opportunity for the manager or higher leadership to reiterate their position on zero tolerance of prejudicial behavior by any employee. Discrimination is when someone has a bias opinion on a specific crowd of people due to their race, sex, religion, or order of rank. This basically goes hand in hand with the phrase judging a book by its cover meaning the person with the negative opinion will not give the other individual a fair chance for the reason being they are being stereotypical and not thinking of the other person’s talent, or character. A modern day example of discrimination would be if a male employer were to compensate a female employee a lower pay due to her gender. At some time in everyone’s life due to today society, we have all been victimized by discrimination. Whether it may be a dirty look from a random person, or the way you dress, talk, and even look.

The article also mentions the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Age Discrimination Act of 1967 to explain the root of the guidelines, and gives further analysis using different clarification approaches to clarify the legal concerns involved. In order to describe prevention methods, the article straightforwardly states what a manager prerequisites. Training and informing the employees is the law. The article’s approach and statements mentioned how to deal with legal matters and to make sure that they are valid. Managing harassment and discrimination problems is not only a responsibility, but also makes good business sense. Maintaining a workplace free of discrimination and harassment by doing whatever is necessary to prevent complaints from occurring in the first place, and stopping them before they reach the level of lawsuits are acceptable methods of dealing with legal issues.
In today’s society we have a term that is called casual racism. The term casual racism is forms of interpersonal racism, such a racist slang. These incidents mainly occur on casual or at unexpected basis. Casual racism can be used in many different ways. Some of the ways that it can be used are negative words, prejudices, and by someone’s race. An example of this could be a joke and also a comment. Casual racism can be used on anyone and everyone. It’s not a good thing to use but many people use it in ways to talk, therefore some people may not get offended if the right person uses it towards them.
With this new evidence, millions of white people now have a substantial insight into the nightmarish reality that black people have to live day after day. In state legislative hearings carried out by the Black and Latino Caucus of New Jersey, the interviews of former state troopers revealed that barracks bulletin boards were once covered with racial epithets and that troopers would use racist banter over the radio, describing cars with black drivers as “buckets of coal.” This testimony, along with other first- hand accounts given at this conference provides proof that when entering encounters with African- Americans, police often have a pessimistic view instead of an objective one.
While in dangerous tactical situations, officers are now taking into consideration, the race of the offender, and what might be implied or taken out of context, if the offender is African American. “Most of the people who now live in terror because local police are too intimidated to do their jobs are black” (Martin, Jonathan). Furthermore, it also causes a danger to society by slowing officer’s reaction time. It puts law enforcement officers in a very tough spot, if they act to quickly they could be labeled a racist and face lawsuits, or even loss of job. However, if they don’t act, they could be harmed or even civilians around them.
In the case study of whistle-blowing at Corcoran State Prison, two corrections officers were all but shunned for the actions they took to put an end to the mistreatment of prisoners. Officers Richard Caruso and Steve Rigg witnessed their fellow corrections officers abusing their power by placing rival gang members in a small recreation yard in the Security Housing Unit (SHU) to promote fighting. The officers would make bets on the inmates, treated the fighting like a sport and used unnecessary deadly force with a firearm at will (Dryburgh, 2009). Caruso and Rigg, both former marines, had superior comprehension of ethically handling a firearm; the actions of their co-workers became unacceptable so they took action (Dryburgh, 2009).

Racial stereotyping is a certain belief about a particular class or group of people. Every racial group weather it is African American, Asian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern and many more have been a victim of racial stereotyping. For example a common racial stereo type about Mexicans/Latinos is that they are poor lazy uneducated people, yet Mexicans/ Latinos are some of the hardest working people I know. Sure there are Mexicans/ Latinos who are not as “educated’’ as others may say ,but there is a big difference between them not wanting to continue school and them not being able too because they need to work in order to support their families. Media is also a big contributor to racial stereotyping we see it in TV shows like “love & hip hop”.
We obviously have racial inequality in our country. If you’re in doubt, simply look at the home prices in predominately black neighborhoods and compare them to those of whites, or look at black unemployment rates. Furthermore, since racial inequality exists, social inequality automatically exists too, and so both realities should be indisputable. Even though oppression is a main part of the book, racism is seen throughout many parts. One significant part that shows a white individual being racist actually happens to Sofia. One day Sofia is walking in town with her new boyfriend and children when they come across the mayor and his wife. The wife asks Sofia to be their maid. which Sofia declines. The mayor does not like this and becomes violent to Sofia, and she defends herself. Because of this the mayor imprisons Sofia, and seen is beaten repeatedly. Her family finds a way to get Sofia out by telling her to become the mayor’s maid. By doing this, she is not in jail anymore, and would be able to see her children. Even though Sofia is released from jail and becomes a maid, she still believes that she went from one prison to the next.
