Research Paper On Racial Prejudice

In today’s society, we face prejudice every day in many forms. Most people in today’s society have either been victims of prejudice or are guilty of exhibiting prejudice towards others.

It has been thoroughly thought over what current topic or issue that people experience in most environments today, at both a micro and macro level that would be able to be examined and have come to the decision of looking at the most widely discussed subject, prejudice. All people are affected by prejudice in one way or another and it can impact on people's lives depending on what form it has taken. Also to be able to acknowledge that all people can be prejudices and see this is the first step to overcoming it.. The question that has been decided upon is that of “What types of prejudice do we see commonly today and how do they affect an individual at a micro and macro level?”

If we take a look at prejudice, which can be defined as socially shared judgement or evaluation of the group including feelings with judgement (Fiske, 2010). Prejudice is one that addresses both explicit and implicit nature (Crisp & Turner, 2010). It can also be based upon a number of factors that are effective from a social perspective as well. Some of the factors that can lead to prejudice is sex, race, age, and also sexual orientation. Some of the issues that occur may be pertaining to racism, sexism, classicism, homophobia, nationalism, and also religious prejudice as well. It can occur when stereotype is put into motion, which leads to a negative outcome. It can be looked at as an attitude, thus has affective, cognitive behavioral component as well. Prejudice has the ability to affect all of us, which include majority group members as well as minority. Gordon Allport discusses prejudice and stereotypes, emerges in part as a result of normal human thinking.

Reverse racism, its existence has been questioned for years now. People worldwide share their views on it and how different they are is astounding, but the question is, is it real or not. No, its not. Reverse racism shouldn’t even exist in the English language. Because, It was just made up by people who commonly want to make a scene over something irrational. For example, when someone says “white people cant dance” people put it off to be more than it actually is. Just because someone says white people cant dance doesn’t mean you have to go through osmoses or something and be salty for the rest of your life, that’s irrelevant, much like the attitude people put off when someone says that.

(Maya Angelou) By definition prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Prejudice to others is hate, judgement, and evil. The effects of prejudice are shown in the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the play The Merchant of Venice, and the tragedy known as the Holocaust. Prejudice affected all people differently, but one thing is true for all; prejudice is crippling and disables those who experience it from being who they truly are and doing as they please.

From a young age, we are misinformed about people who differ from us and are raised in communities with little interactions with other cultures (Tatum, 1997, p.4). This is the fuel of racial prejudice and racism seen in America. According to Dr. Tatum, “prejudice is a preconceived judgment or opinion, usually based on limited information” (p. 5). Prejudice is an expression of racism and is the result of living in a racist society. Likewise, racism is predominately used to describe the negative feelings of one racial group to another (Fredrickson, 2002, p. 1). It involves “cultural messages and

Prejudice is not something new to our society, and it has been able to gain foundation from different sources depending on if it is, sexism, classism, ageism, etc. One of the most prominent forms of prejudice impacting society is racism. Racism presents itself both explicitly and implicitly and in some cases, both, like in stigmatization, which was talked about in chapter 5 of the textbook, “Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination”. To explain it from a stigmatized person’s point of view, it is being consistently characterized as inferior by a group or individual. Furthermore, it is being villainized by another person or group, all based on that individual belonging to a specific group, or identifying/presenting a certain way.

In our society, we are able to witness how our prejudices can affect the way people live. At times, there are people who come forward and confront the injustice in our lives and try helping the victims. However, there are numerous occasions were we fail to confront the prejudice, and take no notice of the consequences that may result; this is evident in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird where the numerous prejudices and injustices heaped upon various characters brings the society itself to moral conflict. We witness first hand how failing to confront various types of prejudices may result large repercussions.

As stated by Maya Angelou, “Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible.” Considering the relevance of this statement, the existence of prejudice seems to be almost embedded into the workings of our society, being present within almost every civilization known to man. Prejudice itself is existent in every facet of one’s life, ranging from seemingly harmless microaggressions, up to systematic discrimination. Through its impact, entire demographics have been diminished to worthlessness, while others are built up upon their suffering, with the subtleties of each ranging drastically. A faulty generalization leading to negative attitudes towards a certain ethnic group is the meaning we intend with the term ‘prejudice’. The term can be made use of quite frequently when discussing the volatile characters and arduous struggles interwoven throughout the history of racial conflict. In this particular context of Merton’s typology, prejudiced is the deeply-rooted feeling of apprehension and distain for minorities; which causes so much violence and discord in America even today. It manifests itself many times by its adherents’ tendency to judge minorities based on stereotypes they may bear. Which is to pass judgment on an individual based on one’s obtuse perception of the ethnic group to which they belong.

Although there has been a lot effort put into race equality, I believe that we still have a long way to go before as a nation we can all say that we are all truly equal. My goal as an African-American woman is to become a Chief Executive officer of a fortune 500 company. Of the 500 top leading companies around the world there are only five African Americans chief executive officers and of those five individuals there is only one woman.

After researching racism, I have found out that racism continues more and more every day. There never really has been an end to the ongoing discrimination. Trying to figure out why this continues is difficult. The only thing that is coming out of this is that we cannot let others be able to be themselves. Even to be able to walk out in public and not being judged at all is extremely hard.

Our world is divided, it has been for centuries. Racially divided, that is. However with modern awakenings and experiences, it is much less segregated than in the past. This is possible because of the sole implication of cultural immersion and exploration. When Europeans venture into Asia or Africans visit South America, they are experiencing cultures and land that is so far from their own, that they are learning new perspectives infinitely. When immigrants come into the United States of America, their whole world is redefined by new views. Transportation and communication breakthroughs are what dissolve racial divisions on an international scale, but we are still seeing racial disunity in America. Race refers to one’s skin tone, hair, and facial features, race is a way to categorize people into groups which then leads to racism. Racial discrimination has always been a problem in the U.S. Though it isn’t as bad as it used to be, it is still an issue that should be resolved. And in order to resolve that issue we need to talk about it. People are being led to think that talking about race is a bad thing but in fact, talking about it can be the key to solving the problem. We need to discuss racial discrimination.
