Racism is the belief that a specific race is superior or inferior to another, that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics. Racism can also be defined as the belief that some races are superior to others. This definition is not sufficient to describe what racism truly is. For example, people who are racist do not like other races such as their skin color, language, traditions, and place of birth or any aspect that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. Long ago in America, racism was a very serious and immoral problem, and it is very much a problem in today’s society, as it was back then but on a dissimilar level. The African Americans, labeled as ‘Blacks,’ were slaves to white men. The slaves were disregarded, and beaten and insulted badly. Thus, sparked the beginning of a war and civil rights movements, all in attempts to resolve this problem. It is a belief that labels a person’s worth, social, and moral traits based on his/her inherent nationality or biological features (Anti-Defamation League). This mentality has been around for centuries and still exists today. There are several theories about how such came about and why it continues to thrive. Racism can only be thoroughly studied by tracing its roots and history. Knowing the relevant events prior to and after the peak of a racist manifestation in the society during a certain period of time is one of the keys in understanding the nature of racism. It is important to note that the attempt to understand the nature of racism is not necessarily equivalent to the attempt to justify it. The main purpose of racism studies should be directed towards the attempt to lessen, if not eradicate such mentality. The Holocaust, the infamous racist manifestation which took place in Germany is a great example of what happens when racism is not stopped or prevented. Taking such infamous racist events in history under an extensive look, reveals some of the major arguments/concepts/causes of racism that could lead to understanding racism as a whole and thereby help address this issue in the modern-day society. If one hates someone or something that means they have an intense dislike towards them. Sometimes this hate can be so large it can be an influence for mass destruction. We have learned, or even have seen examples of hate turning into something bigger throughout our history. These examples include the multiple wars, terrorist’s attacks, and genocides. Many of these incidents were drove by hate, and did not end well. What drives this hate? How can people turn on one another with just feeling hate towards them? The Holocaust being one of the many genocides in our history was indeed influenced by an intense dislike. That intense dislike was towards certain types of people it ended up taking multiple lives.

When the war ended in 1945, millions of Jews had perished. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime had almost entirely wiped out a single race of people in what would become known as the Holocaust. However, the Jews were not the only people who had been stripped of their dignity and killed. There were other groups who the Nazi’s persecuted against. The Roma, homosexuals, the mentally and physically disabled, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Political Prisoners were all systematically gathered up and killed. When the Holocaust gets mentioned, many don't talk about the other millions of innocent people who were murdered alongside the Jews. Many don't see these people as victims at all. The number of people murdered during the Holocaust reaches close to eleven million people. “Contragenics” is the term used to talk about all of the groups who were murdered under the Nazi regime during the Holocaust. These innocent lives were lost in the Holocaust, and while history hasn’t forgotten, humanity has.

Racism is defined as the systematic subordination of certain racial groups by those groups in power . As a society, we must first eradicate ignorance in order to defeat racism. We must acknowledge that people have different ways of viewing the world and that even though someone may have a different opinion than you, it is not necessarily wrong. Racism is defined as poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race or the belief that some races of people are superior to others. This belief has been instilled in people for centuries. These beliefs have slightly deteriorated due to the civil rights movement. However, racist beliefs have managed to be passed down from generation to generation which is why racism is still quite prevalent today.

Hate crime is a prejudice-motivated crime in which a person is verbally or physically attacked solely based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability or other prejudice. These hate crimes are often involved with violence and can be identified as threats, vandalism, assaults, and hate propaganda. One notable hate crime is the Holocaust which was the Nazi’s persecution of the Jewish people - where Jewish people were targeted which led to at least 6 million deaths of the Jewish community. From 1933 through 1945 was a period of history called the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, people were being killed for their looks, race, and disability. About 11 million people were killed in brutal and tragic ways. Adolf Hitler, the leader, wanted to create a pure race. Racism helped Hitler organize the population into the way he wanted. He wanted people to support the cause of making a pure race. If people opposed, they would be persecuted. Racism allowed Hitler to influence the German people into following his leadership even if it meant genocide.

People made laws against racism and it is not as blunt anymore. But opinions and stereotypes will remain which will cause others to still be treated differently.

The Holocaust is one of the horrible things that can, and did, happen during war, when hate and prejudice was at its highest. It forced many people to hide away in small cramped areas with little to no privacy and food. The Holocaust began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. It ended in 1945 when Allied powers defeated the Nazis. 1.1 million children were killed or died during this horrendous time in history. Not just Jews were murdered, many people were homsexual, hiding a Jew, or did not agree with Hitler and the Nazis. We have seen that the Holocaust was a terrible event that we hope to never see again. It affected so many people back when it happened and it could possibly still affect people today. Young children that survived the holocaust could still be alive today. The ones that are alive and still remember the terrible and tragic events that happened are never going to forget what happened to them. Jews had been persecuted and killed for hundreds of years, but the Holocaust brought to people’s attention that the discrimination towards Jews was really bad. Hopefully the Holocaust will bring to people’s attention of how bad the discrimination was.

Most Jews had lived in Palestine and parts of the Middle East before the second century B.C. Many Jews were to serve time as slaves in Rome before being set free through a process call manumission. They were then made citizens and then there became such a large population of Jews that special laws were made referencing to the Jewish religion by the end of the first century B.C., because the Empire was highly populated with Jews. Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. It is the systematic oppression of people who did not set up the system of oppression (i.e. white people vs. every other POC). This system is not just institutionalized but embedded into every fabric of society from the education system, justice system, media, etc. The oppressors begin to spread their hatred through propaganda, legislation, and stereotypes, which begin to affect even the oppressed who learn to despise themselves and their culture. The oppressors lead the destruction of their lands, the genocide of their people, enslavement, low wealth and social standings amongst others because of the stereotypes that the oppressor has perpetuated. There are different types of racism: casual, institutional, and societal. Casual racism are the little jokes about race that are subtle and/or reflected in everyday life. Institutional racism is racism enacted by the government, media, or any other industry with laws or lack of representation because of any internalized/externalized racial bias. Societal racism is the racism that society is comfortable with and doesn’t seem to want to change because of the racist ideals set in place (stop and frisk, stand your ground, etc.).
