What is racism? Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to categorize it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism has changed a lot over the last century.

Racism is an ideology that is based on the principle that human beings can be subdivided and ranked into categories as being inferior or superior. It’s worth mentioning that in recent years the concept or notion of racism has changed. Racism in the post-racial twenty-first century is now marked by subtlety that discriminates against individuals through unnoticeable or seemingly passive methods. Although overt racism has decreased since the 1960s, it has been supplemented by what is called colorblind racism,” which refers to “contemporary racial inequality as the outcome of nonracial dynamics” (p. 455-456).

Racism can be defined by the formula prejudice + power = racism. Racism is when racial prejudice is turned into action that harms others. Racism is the belief that one race of people is superior to another because of their colour or race. Racism is simply based on the colour of a person's skin. Racism is destructive and it disembowels people by shattering their identity.

Racism has been around since the beginning of civilization and was a big deal. During the times of the Old Testament and New Testaments were written, nations did not generally have anything like the modern western concept of equality. Essentially, each culture thought of itself as superior to others around it. Even the ancient Greeks, known for having pioneered the concept of democratic governance, considered mankind to be divided into two general classes- Greeks and Barbarians. Nations did not consider morality when they set out to conquer one another, and ownership could be gained by “right of conquest”. When one nation conquered another and spoils were taken, slaves were often among those spoils.

The Cambridge Dictionaries Online (2011) defines racism as “the belief that people's qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as the members of your own, or the resulting unfair treatment of members of other races.”

The prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races; discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race, is the definition of Racism, according to Webster’s Dictionary. Today the use of the term “racism” doesn’t just fall under one single definition. Racist practices often include the idea that humans can be subdivided into groups that are different in their social behavior and innate capacities and that can be ranked as inferior or superior.

Public places were segregated. Colored people had to use specific water fountains, schools were segregated, and blacks had to sit at the back of the buses. If they were to disobey then there would be consequences and repercussions. Equality was a figment of imagination, a dream the the minority groups had. Throughout the years racism has decreased and many things pertaining to racism were made illegal but that doesn’t mean racism disappeared. Firstly, let’s focus on the learnt aspect of racism. One argument for racism being taught is the fact that throughout human evolution, continental travel would have been extremely difficult and unlikely to happen due to the sheer unfamiliarity with the world. For example, dangers, such as predators, or how to prepare or even prolong existence throughout long travels in transportation such as boats would prove difficult. Furthermore, the technology was insufficient and undeveloped to were ferrying people was an unrealistic concept. This indicates that there was essentially no contact between different races or explicitly different looking people which suggests that humans evolved without the recognition of ‘races’ and therefore without the ideology of a ‘superior’ race existing.

Name-calling, bullying, verbal abuse – are all forms of racism and can be seen in high schools, where all different backgrounds –teachers, pupils or staff – face with negative backlash of racism. Students of different race groups find it extremely tough to bond with their classmates from other “races circles”. How damaging is racism to schools? To society?, is it all black and white or are we blind to it?
