Rainsford is a good survivor because he is experienced and careful. One trait that makes Rainsford a good survivor is his experience. Rainsford’s experience allows him to survive in any situation. Because he “has hunted for a long time,” he was intelligent enough to climb the tree and hide from Zaroff (Connell XX). His knowledge of hunting helps him when he becomes hunted by Zaroff. He is a skilled survivor because he trusted his experience to guide him to his survival. Another trait that makes him a good survivor is his ability to be careful in every harmful situation. While he was in the tree, to keep him careful “he flattened himself down on the limb,” when he realized “something was coming through the bush, coming slowly, carefully, coming
"I will not lose my nerve. I will not." is what Rainsford when the General let him go, even in the face of death he keeps his nerve through sheer willpower. Throughout the story, Rainsford continues to be smart and due to this, does not change in any way. This shows how Rainsford is a proficient hunter, and not even the face of death will make him show his true character. This is because Rainsford already is his truest self and does not need any support to reveal that to the reader.
Rainsford seems more kind than Zaroff and would not kill humans for pleasure. Rainsford thinks that the world is made up of two groups, the hunters and the hunted. He does not care about how the hunted feel until he becomes the hunted. But as he realizes what it feels like to be the hunted his perspective changes. He ends up becoming a better person because of this experience. After being the hunted, he takes more though into agreeing with what Whitney said in the beginning which was that animals may actually have feelings.
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
Even though clearly distraught Rainsford was able to make key decisions to save his life. “Nerve, nerve, nerve” he panted, as he dashed along …. Then he leaped far into the sea.”(18). This quote tells the reader even while battling nerves and running away from a pack of dogs Rainsford was able to make a imperative choice to save his life. Rainsford survives the three days to beat Zaroff and win the game but still feels uneasy will not rest until General Zaroff is dead. “I am still a beast at bay,” he said, in a low, hoarse voice.” Get ready, General Zaroff.”(18). This quote discloses to the reader that Rainsford felt like quarry and wanted Zaroff dead and was not satisfied with merely winning the game. This quote also shows what kind of man Rainsford is and how he is willing to die for what he feels is right. Rainsford battled many trials throughout the story but somehow managed to make the best out of each one.
Rainsford keeps his hope in the beginning when he thought that hunting other people was not humanly and considered murder. When Rainsford sets off to hide from being hunted, his initial objective is to get as far away as possible from General Zaroff, “Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours. ‘I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve,’ he said through tight teeth” (Connell 16). Rainsford repeats that he must keep his nerve,
But since Sanger Rainsford has intellect, he can survive, unlike the animals who have intelligence and instinct. At the end of the hunted, Sanger Rainsford makes it out alive using his knowledge and reason.
Rainsford is not a hero due to his egocentric attitude and hypocritical behavior. After Rainsford hears the hounds and sees Ivan and General Zaroff approaching, he then creates a trap to kill General Zaroff. When Rainsford hears the footsteps stop, he looks back at the trap and “[sees] in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not wholly failed” (Conell 14). This quote proves that Rainsford does not obtain the qualities of an altruistic and civil being. This is due to Rainsford wanting to kill General Zaroff for his own survival. Furthermore, once Rainsford accidentally kills Ivan, he swims away in refuge from General Zaroff.
To live you must overcome challenges, defy odds, and in a mental way and physical way, become a strong person. Zaroff says:“Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and if needs be taken by the strong.” Zaroff believes that in order to live in this world comfortably, you must be strong. The general was tough, he hunted the simplest game to the most dangerous. He was physically strong, but not mentally, he gave in. Rainsford, however, was both. For rainsford to win this game. He needed to be mentally and physically quick, which he is. Zaroff said you need to be strong in life, and Rainsford definitely was. He overcame his challenges and was
Rainsford is an intelligent man. Early in the story, “Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right, and he doggedly swam in that direction” (34). Rainsford had just fallen in the water,
First, rainsford is adventurous man because when he was in the forest getting chased by zaroff. “Whenever rainsford gets to go own a hunting trip he goes to some other place to hunt and that is why he is adventurous( page 1,2).” Rainsford was adventurous because of all of the things he was able to do and survive. Rainsford is Adventurous because he is able to survive and stay away from zaroff. Whenever rainsford was begins chased by zaroff rainsford was climbing a tree to sleep but when he got to the top he saw that zaroff was right under the
The first trait of a true survivor that Rainsford and Katniss both possess is that they both choose intelligence over strength in order to win their “game”. This is proved by Rainsford and Katniss when rainsford eludes General Zaroff, when Katniss drops the tracker jackers onto the other contestants, and when Katniss blows up the pile of supplies. The first example is when Rainsford eludes General Zaroff. Even when General Zaroff has his companion Ivan and a pack of dogs, Rainsford still eludes Zaroff. He does this by setting traps along his path to slow Zaroff down. These traps include a Malay Man catcher, a burmese tiger pit, and he also ties his knife a a stick
He went through a traumatizing thing but he still stayed strong. He never quit. He persevered and stayed strong. He found a way to calm himself down. He calms himself down by promising to never touch a gun again. And when he found out he killed his brother he showed determination by promising not to touch a gun. And he also showed enthusiasm, because he really felt like that decision to not touch a gun was the right thing. So he had passion for what he was doing. He supported himself and that is how he got through his adversity. In “The Most Dangerous Game” it states that, “Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable. For a moment he stood there, thinking. An idea that held a wild chance came to him, and, tightening his belt, he headed away from the swamp” (Connell 21). It also says “They would be on him any minute now. His mind worked frantically. He thought of a native trick he had learned in Uganda. He slid down the tree. He caught hold of a springy young sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife, with the blade pointing down the trail; with a bit of wild grapevine he tied back the sapling. Then he ran for his life. The hounds raised their voices as they hit the fresh scent. Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay feels. He had to stop to get his breath. The baying of the hounds stopped abruptly, and Rainsford's heart stopped too. They must have reached
Beyond his reactive and resourceful ways of thinking, Rainsford is visibly aggressive and energetic when he has to fight instead of fleeing. He refuses to allow himself to give up and be killed by Zaroff and decides to keep on running forward. As the hunter is escaping, he says, “Nerve, nerve, nerve!” and then “forced himself on toward that gap”, where he “leaped far out into the sea.” (14). Rainsford believed that he still had enough energy left to swim in the harsh waters. As a result, he experienced a rush of adrenaline due to how
In the story, Rainsford and Whitney were on a large Island that was called Ship-trap Island. The two travelers were traveling the sea looking for the island. They were looking through a dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness upon the yacht. When they arrived at the island they see a moose getting picked a dragged away.
