The play, “A Raisin in the Sun,” written by, Lorraine Hansberry, tells the story of an African American Family from the 1950s.The play opens to with an early morning view of what the Younger Family goes through on a daily basis. Early in the story, the reader learns that the Youngers are going to be receiving an insurance check of $10,000 due to the recent death of the husband of Mama. Walter Lee mentions the check and how he wishes that he could use the money to manage a local liquor store with a couple of his buddies. As readers, we are also exposed to the tense nature of the family; once one fight ends another seems to begin shortly after. Beneatha gets into a short argument with Walter about her choice of career, a doctor. Beneatha seems to be the only one to understand that the money is entirely Mama’s. We learn of Mama’s dreams and what she wants to do with the money which is to build a house so that she can provide better for her family while Ruth believes it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to give Walter some of the money for his dream. Despite Mama’s objections, Beneatha invites a new friend over, Joseph Asagai who is an African intellectual student. Beneatha shares her concerns with her mom that their family does not know more about African culture. Because she fainted, Ruth goes to a doctor and learns that she is two months pregnant. Beneatha’s friend comes over and gives Beneatha a few gifts from her African background. She is disappointed when he doesn’t approve of her dream to become a doctor.
