While Mesopotamia is greatly defined through it development of literature through writings such as Hammurabi's code and religion through Babylonian gods and goddesses, Egyptian civilization is greatly defined through the development of irrigation and agriculture. Egyptian civilization as described in great lengths in the, “Western Heritage” was centered around the Nile River. With the aid of the river, Egyptians were able to develop a complex agricultural system of planting and harvesting, which allowed for a surplus of crops incomparable to the rest of the ancient world. By having an advantageous agricultural system, Egypt was able to place their focus elsewhere, allowing for unified society rather than having individual city states. Under this unified society, religion was the dominant factor, leading to one of the world’s first theocracies, as well as some of the western civilization's greatest dynastic rulers. Although Egypt's unified state allowed for it to become one of the most highly developed civilizations of the western world, it also led to its destruction. The word “civilization” comes from the Latin term for “city.” The first civilizations were the river-valley civilizations, so-called because they all developed alongside major rivers to secure an adequate water supply for agricultural production. 2 of the greatest river-valley civilizations were Mesopotamia and Egypt. All though they both supported having a patriarchal leader or king, Egypt had a strong, centralized government, whereas Mesopotamia was decentralized, and built based on small city-states operating independently.

Although the word “civilization” can have many meanings, it is best defined as a state with monumental architecture and economic/social inequality; Consequently, to be civilized means to be part of an advanced society with the elements of a civilization. Monumental architecture is a key indicator of a civilized society due to the necessity for an abundance of wealth and resources in order to build these monuments. For example, the Egyptians built large and intricate pyramids in their civilization. Since these masterpieces were built on such a large scale, it can be assumed that they had a civilized society with an abundance of wealth and resources. The Latin root of the word, civilization, derives from civ, meaning citizens. The figurative root of civilization is also the development and advancement of the citizens. The three ancient civilizations that were the most advanced were Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and India. However, Egypt presented itself as the most civilized society because of their geography, government, and architecture.

Ancient Egypt was a complex civilization because it had all of the important indicators for a complex society. Indicators started with the hunting and gathering. Then they started settling in river valleys such as the Nile because it was fertile farming land. They begin to farm. This made the population go up because they were selling more goods.

In the beginning, we were hunters and gathers. Then, we started settling and farming. Our population started rising, so we needed more food to live. We put ourselves at river valleys to have water; Egypt ended up at the Nile river valley. Over time they developed the seven indicators of a great civilization: Well Organized Government, Complex Religion, Specialized Skills and Jobs, Social Classes, Long Distance Trade, Methods of Keeping Records, and Cities. This is how Ancient Egypt became a great, complex civilization because it shows all of the seven indicators.

What makes a civilization? According to Google’s dictionary, civilization means “the stage of human social development and organization that is considered the most advanced,” and “the society, culture, and way of life in a particular area. They have a point, but they forgot one thing. Civilizations both promote unity within their boundaries and interaction with other civilizations. Both are fundamental to their society, or else their civilization would be a dystopian society. The following will answer how and why they do both of those things.

According to archaeologist in order to be defined as a civilization certain criteria must be met. Early archaeologists believed in order to be considered a civilization a society must have cultural superiority, which meant they must have the ability to read and write. If this was the sole criteria used to judge if a society was labeled a civilization, then you could say the Inca of South America, who constructed cities on top of mountains and had a complex system of irrigation canals, were not one because they did not have a system for reading or writing. Early civilizations include Ancient Greece, which made an impact to society and still affect people in the modern world. Classic antiquity is the period that begun around 500A.D. This is the period before the middle ages, this refers to Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, the Mediterranean Sea and the South of Asia. Ancient Greece is said to be one of the most influential societies on modern day life.

Civilization is the period in which humans develop and organize their community in an advanced form in different aspects. As time was fleeting the ancient Greek civilization was starting to shape and adopt many alterations which started to center a more stable community. Just as the Greeks there were other civilizations developing some similar to the Greeks attributes and some differing them in different aspects.

For example, they have organized Central Government /Complex Institution, Job Specialization,Cities, Art and Architecture Technology , and Writing / Recording Keeping. Historians do not agree on how many characteristics are essential to success of a civilization. After analyzing all the characteristics, I believe that Organized Central Government / Complex Institution,Job Specialization,and Art and Architecture / Technology.

A feauture that makes a civilization so great is its geographical location. A good geographic location would be one that is close to the water. With water that keeps flowing crops will stay healthy water also helps crops grow. Just like the egyptian civilization they are located by the nile river and the egyptians obtained water from the nile river to water their crops.
