Squeaky may be small and scrawny, but she can win any track meet. Compared to Gretchen, they both are similar in many ways. In “Raymond’s Run”, by Toni Cade Bambara, Gretchen and Squeaky fight their way to the finish line. Their differences may split them apart, but they both are similar in many ways. Both girls are similar more than they know it. Squeaky loves to run and be the best, while Gretchen runs to try to beat Squeaky. They both were the forgiving type when they came to an agreement and try to get along, even if they were enemies to begin with. They both claimed that they were the best, Squeaky stating that “ There is no track meet that [She] don’t win the first-place medal”(Bambara,23), meaning that she believes that no one can beat her. Gretchen is also a very good runner, Squeaky even stated that ” …[She] smile. Because she’s good, no doubt about it”(Bambara,32). They both agreed that they were very competitive towards each other and Squeaky believes that they can get along and coach Raymond. …show more content…

Gretchen is the “mean girl” of the story, Squeaky stating that “...Gretchen who is, as far as [She’s] concerned, the only one talking in this ventriloquist-dummy routine”(Bambara, 26). Squeaky, on the other hand, seems to be the responsible one in the story, stating that “If anybody has something to say to Raymond...they have to come to [her]” (Bambara,23). Squeaky has to take care of her brother while Gretchen and her friends make fun of Raymond for his disability. Squeeky practices alone and lost her friend to Gretchen, while Gretchen makes Rosie and Mary Louise believe that she was going to win. Gretchen and Squeaky in the story seem to act as opposites, like a yin yang
