Throughout the semester deviance has been our primary focus of the class, I actually have gotten into the habit of determining things that I do whether they fall under the spectrum of deviant behavior. Certain behaviors correlate with certain theories that have been enmeshed into categories. Since many theories can be grouped together to explain certain behaviors I actually have a few that I am going to be talking about today. But the main form of deviance that I will be focusing on today is rape. Emotional numbness, Anxiety, loss of confidence and constant flashbacks are just an array of things that these young girls will have to deal with for the rest of their lives.
Rape is something that continues to happen not only in the United States, but in every country, and is continuing to ruin many people's lives. Also there are myths that women and young girls are the main victims when it comes to rape cases, although there may be many cases that are directed mainly towards women , men and young boys are also victims. I believe that because it is more common for women to get raped it's easier in a way to report it as to where if it were a male, he may not want to report it because he would feel demasculinized, and embarrassed. But what if you lived in a country where rape is considered normal amongst the villagers because young girls , simply had it coming to them because for some reason they looked at a man or said thank you to them. Obviously she was flirting with him and
Almost two-thirds of sexual assault is committed by someone known to the victim. Yet rape and sexual assault are one of the least reported crime in the united states with only 39% of attacks being reported to the police each year. Rape culture has been present throughout history in the entire world and sadly it continues to exist. Rape culture needs to be talked about more openly, so victims are not afraid to accuse their rapist or attacker. Communities should come together to create a culture of care and stop shaming men, women, and children into victim blaming. Educating society about what is right and wrong while offering victims support can potentially prevent rapes from occurring and putting the sick people who committed the crime into prison.
Rape defined is forcing sexual intercourse upon someone without his or her consent. This isn’t just a girls’ problem, boys have to deal with this too. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly one in ten girls and one in twenty boys say they have been raped or experienced some form of sexual assault (Atlanta Journal, 1). Almost more than half of rape victims know their attacker; they don’t report it or tell anybody. In most date rape cases, the attacker and victim have known each other for at least a year or even longer. Only about 10 percent of rapes are reported, less than that go to court. According to data taken by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, one forcible rape is reported to the police every six minutes, on
However, I am privy to the fact that the U.S ranks amongst the highest in the number of female rapes. It seems that the US is at war with itself. Here in the U.S individuals rape others for their own personal gain rather than a war tactic. Rape in the U.S is created by our rape culture instead of being a weapon of war. Rape culture is all around us. There is a sort of "tolerance" for rape that has been normalized in society. This is not acceptable. Our rape culture takes form in many ways. One being victims seem to always get the finger pointed at them when they gather the courage to report it. Personally speaking, I was taught if I do not want to be raped then I should not wear certain outfits, drink alone, leave my drink unattended, I also should not walk alone at night, and the list goes on. And if I were to be raped, I should be prepared to be bombarded with questions that paint me as partially responsible for getting raped, which in turn, takes some of the blame off of the assailant. This is not right, however, it is justified due to our rape
Deviance is defined as the recognized violation of cultural norms. Violating these cultural norms can also be labeled a crime whether or not it is an actual written law in our society. Deviance isn’t something that is set in stone; rather it can vary based on location or on time (present and future) as a victim of cultural lag. When deviance and crime are thought of in the context of the internet, an impersonal location readily accessible to the masses, the numerous types of deviance actually occurring can become daunting to think about. Some of these are mere deviances against folkways which could be considered a slap on the wrist infraction, while others would be labeled as more formal crimes with moral
Rape has been an issue for many centuries. We have laws to prevent and reduce rape, but laws are not perfect. There are always people out there that cannot follow the laws. If a criminal is caught, the will be brought to justice; however not all the criminals or offenders that break those laws are punished. An uncommon rape that is rarely addressed is correction officers raping female inmates.
Rape has become a huge crime in the U.S. Most rapes are not reported; therefore many of the offenders never spend a day in prison. It has become a huge issue for women because now every time they go out they have to think of the things that may happen to them. They have to think about the way that they are dressed; if the clothes they are wearing are a little too revealing and may provoke sex offenders or rapists. But women are not the only ones who need to be aware of sex offenders. Men can be sexually harassed and raped as well. Many may not believe that rape happens, but it does, more often than you think. Somewhere in the United States, someone is getting sexually harassed every
I want to elaborate further on gender issue from a different approach – rape. Recently, I have heard news about a brutal gang rape in Brazil involving over 30 men raping a 16-year-old girl and some of the rapists even posted videos and pictures on social media after the incident. Despite the severe nature of the event, many people even criticize and blame the girl for what happened. According to them, the victim bore responsibility for being raped because she was getting drunk and wearing a short skirt. Nevertheless, this is a confusing and unacceptable leniency for the perpetrators, along with a cruel, unfair and unethical attitude towards the victim. What is happening, when a girl was raped – who needs to receive sympathy from the society, but the
It is necessary to recognize rape and sexual assault as the heinous crimes they are in order to increase public awareness and build a better support system for victims. Small solutions can help to resolve the problem. Media and news sources can bring an end victim-blaming by focusing instead on the rapists. If we hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions, we take an active stand against sexual assault and rape culture. Today, many areas of the world, including the United States, lack comprehensive education regarding rape because of a general unwillingness to discuss topics involving sex. As a result, an idea of sexual power and dominance persists in modern society despite being out-dated. Some believe that it is normal and even acceptable to exhibit the aggressive behavior present in instances of rape and sexual assault. Efforts to adjust the education system could have a profound impact on the way people view these crimes and their reactions to them. By presenting sexual intercourse as a consensual partnership, we can create a new environment. We can and must end the sexual objectification of people to bring about change and eliminate rape
Studies have shown that 20% of women have been raped in their lifetime. Rape is actually pretty common in America. Some people actually joke around about rape culture. Women in America are oppressed in many, many ways. One major example of this form of oppression is rape. Rape has been a major problem in America for a while now and it needs to be fixed. Studies have shown that one in five women get raped. They rate is actually pretty extreme. An argument commonly used is that men are raped too. This can show that women aren't the only ones raped, but also men. One thing a lot will say is that women are oppressed in a lot more ways than just rape, but just harassment in general. There are multiple ways to help with rape
There has been a lot of discussion of rape within sociologists, criminologists, and feminist networks. In my own words, rape is someone engaging with someone else sexually without their consent. Rape is not strictly vaginal penetration, nor an exclusive heterosexual only act. If two people are in a relationship or married, there is still no justification to the perpetrator for their act. In the 21st century, although rape crimes have dropped 24.1% from 2001 to 2010, but not all rapes are reported (Eitzen, Zinn, & Smith, 2010). Curtis (1997) reported that 42% of rape victims do not tell anyone of their assaults. There may be a number of reasons why victims don’t speak out. Victims of rape typically fear their own safety and lives if they speak out on it. Men who are victims typically don’t report rapes because it’s considered demasculizing to their gender. Rape victims are traumatized for life, they live with the burden, as their perpetrators walk away free (Curtis, 1997).
This is a problem everyone should be concerned about regardless of gender. Rape culture is damaging society in countless ways. Rape cases must be taken more seriously and that cannot happen when jokes are made daily about raping someone or the ideology prevails that rape is a myth for attention seekers. Victims deserve to receive closure that the awful person who took advantage of them would serve time but, sadly, that is a rarely the case. As long as this continues it is less likely people will report rape and those criminals will go
Girls are getting rapped at a young age. Mostly rape happens by people the victim knows. Many people argue that this problem is caused by the own victim, blaming the victim of “asking for it”, people think that only because a girl is wearing a skirt there asking to be sexully abused. Society takes rape as if it was something that has to happen, if a girl is raped people tend to think it’s okay because it happens to other girls to “it’s just life”, how is getting raped life? People believed that getting raped is either going to happen or not, they believe that if you did get raped it was just bad luck or you wanted it either because of the way you dress, act, talk, or even the way you look. The problem here is that society sees this a normal, when we all know it’s
In Roxane Gay’s article, “The Careless Language of Sexual Violence,” she breaks down rape in the perspective of our society nowadays. Gay states that our world today does not take the act of rape as an important issue to pay attention to by saying, “the idea that male aggression and violence towards women is acceptable and often inevitable.” Also, that in many cases the idea of victim blaming plays a big role in the way our society looks at the subject; saying that the individual that was raped is in the wrong and the rapist is not at fault. In the article, Gay states that we live in a “rape culture,” meaning that the way the world is today is to view violence towards women as something that is not an important
Although rape is obviously wrong, some people argue that it’s human nature and that victims of raped shouldn’t be noticed. It’s mostly men who say it’s okay because it’s mostly men who have been sexually assaulting
The main reason we will examine is “Rape Myth Acceptance” (Stahl, Eek, & Kazemi). According to Stahl, Eek, and Kazemi, rape myths are beliefs that are mostly untrue but widely accepted as a means to justify sexual aggression towards females (2010). Some examples of rape myth acceptance include: the belief that a women is lying about the rape and the belief that the woman did something to provoke the rape. The public uses these beliefs to make victims feel ashamed about the crime that took place. As a result of this, women are “highly reluctant to report that they have been raped” (Stahl, Eek, & Kazemi 2010). As well as very unlikely to testify in a court of law against their attacker. There is an underlining belief that there is always some way that the victim could have prevented the crime which proves detrimental when attempting to get the victim to
