THE USE OF ………………… IN IMPROVING NARRATIVE READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHT GRADERS OF SMP ISLAM AZ-ZAHRA PALEMBANG CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents the background of the study, the research questions, the objectives of the study, and the significance of the study. 1.1 Background Reading is one of the four language skills which are identified as paramount importance in the English teaching and learning process besides listening, speaking, and writing (Brown, 2001). It is necessary for students to have good reading ability as it will influence their successful life especially in academic. In addition, reading cannot be separated from comprehension because its purpose is to comprehend what has been read. Without having any comprehension from the text which is read, it means that the activity is useless. According to Richards and Renandya (2002), reading for comprehension is the primary purpose for reading. According to Nuttal (1996: 168-169), the central ideas of reading are: the idea of meaning, the transfer of meaning from one to another, the transfer of message from writer to reader, how we get meaning by reading and how the reader, the writer, and the text all contribute to the process. Grabe and Stoller (2002) stated that academic success depends on the students’ ability in comprehending the language in the texts. In chapter five, by Cris Tovani, “Why Am I Reading This” explains how educators need to establish a clear reading instructional plan. In order to accomplish understanding students need to concentrate on main ideas from the readings. Tovani explains that it is vital for teachers to model how students should hold their thinking or slow down their reading. Throughout the chapters she gives examples as question strategies, highlighting text, or summarizing key points. As this will benefit students in their reading assignment. Tovani also explains throughout the chapter that teachers should model thinking aloud. This strategy will benefit students on how to negotiate difficult text.
There are many important components involved in learning to read, however, five main aspects stand out. These being early experiences with language and print, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary and fluency. All of these elements are important and depend on each other to generate the ultimate goal for reading which is comprehension. Teachers need to have a comprehensive understanding of the process of learning to read, intensive knowledge of effective strategies to help children thrive when learning to read

After taking the literacy survey I asked my dad why he thought reading was important. He gave me a look that said I’ve told you this a million times and said, “Reading is the key to success.” This is a common truth. However, the real question is, if reading is so necessary, then what can I do to master it. After twenty-one years of life I cannot say that I know all there is to know about reading and writing, but I can say that through my experiences I have learned to love reading and it has made all the difference.
Academic reading is one of the most essential tools in college. It shows us (as students) that we can read for pleasure, but at the same time read to gain knowledge in subjects we did not know before. On page 41 in the book Curious Writer it shows a diagram of purpose and examples of questions that readers’ may have when reading I have used it before and it works because it lets the reader think in a more broader perspective, generate more questions, and find the answers to those questions (aside from the examples’ the book provides). Even when you read (pg. 43, topic Beliefs About Reading) sometimes the text it can make you question or rethink your original beliefs that the reader may have before.
Reading is a basic skill that students develop and improve throughout their whole life. There will always be room to improve a person’s reading skills; whether they be nine or ninety, one’s brain will always be building and making new connections and like Jonathan Seagull, one should strive to improve.

By doing so, an instructor offers the learners the chance to nurture their skills in comprehension, vocabulary, fluency. All these skills are vital for a learner to acquire the proper educational abilities that can have a lasting impact on the learner’s ability. The instructor can help a learner to succeed in a reading program by offering the learner a chance to decode the meaning of the words read easily through practice.
There have been various research studies and debates about how children learn. It started with Webster Spellers and their popular method of reading instruction, which was replaced with alphabetic and phonics methods. The debate soon became about phonics and whole-word method. They found that not one method worked for all children. Soon peoples thinking shifted to learning to read, should be as natural as learning to talk. Current research has found that whole-language and code-focused instruction are important for developing readers. Language helps us navigate through like. Oral language is vital groundwork of literacy instruction. Children with stronger oral communication read more fluently, than those who struggle with oral communication. Language skills identified with reading include vocabulary, metalinguistic awareness, and listening comprehension. Children’s vocabulary is correlational to their literacy skills. Explicit instruction is crucial for proficient literacy to develop in children.
Good reading comprehension is a fundamental element that students must have to attain. Through researches, it is clearly stated that reading proficiency has a strong relationship between reading proficiency and academic success at all ages included in the university level. It is definitely important to discuss what strategy is the best way to practice to improve BSIE students reading comprehension for the sake of students’ success in the field of teaching.
Oral language is also an important component in reading. When a child enters school, they enter with an amount of oral language and background knowledge that would come from their experiences so far. This knowledge helps them to understand their peers and others around them. The amount of oral language development within is student, directly reflects upon their reading level. The easier it is for a child to speak, the easier it is for them to pick up reading. Reading is not an easy task, but oral language does help with the process. Additionally, oral language would also help with the recognizing and association of words to text that is being read. There may be a situation in which the student is reading about for which they can relate too. This could be due to their prior oral language development. Associating words that are recognized in their vocabulary with words that are in the text creates a link that the student can expand on. This
Reading and writing are both important; you can’t have one without the other. They are skills that are increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write today, will somehow affect your future job, family, position, or even your salary.
