In the article “Reading Literature Makes Us Smarter and Nicer” by Annie Murphy Paul (2013) the author admonishes that “deep reading” increases our capacity of empathy on real life situations. Paul acknowledges the argument that Gregory Currie, professor of philosophy at the University of Nottingham says about how there is no evidence that people become morally/socially better for reading great books. However, Paul continues to support that reading enhances our way of life and understanding of individuals. Deep reading affects our way of culture, understanding, and knowledge in a positive way.
By reading books and becoming engaged in them, it gives the reader a new sense of an “ecstatic experience” as Paul states. If a reader is enjoying a book, thy will take their time to read it and become deep in reflection of their own self. They can connect the ideas from a book to their own lives, and even establish some opinions of their own on what they are reading, which improves our culture as a society. By encouraging other people to read, and young people to read earlier, they can have a finer chance to acquire the skill of “spiritual reading.” In today’s society, many young people have become more engaged in technology, excluding out the other ways to explore the world. However, they can experience both without having to sacrifice one over the other, and it benefits them in the long run.
