Reasons And Differences Of Spain And The Ming Empire

The empires of the Mongol empire and the Ming empire are different from some things and similar in other ways the way they were established was very different, but the way they came to an end were somewhat similar. There are many comparisons between the two empires and what they did. The way the two empires the Mongols and the Ming where establishes are very different, but the way they were maintained are very much alike. The Mongol empire was established by Genghis Kahn in 1206 AD and he built the empire to be one of the largest empires ever.

Zheng He and his fleets needed to establish Chinese presence and influences in those countries in order to enforce the tributary system. Although China had no interest in imperial expansion through oceanic exploration like the Europeans did, navy power was traditionally associated with the strength of a nation. Therefore, the gigantic treasure ships, the significant scale of Zheng He’s crew as well as the Chinese goods he brought to the foreign countries all served the political needs to display wealth and power of the Middle Kingdom.

In the early 1400’s ,the Europeans began to have control over the world by setting colonies in the Americas, along the coast of Africa, and parts of southeast Asia. This is referred to as the Age of Exploration . This Age was  caused by advances in technology and it was motivated by the desire for glory, religion , and economic factors. The accomplishments of the European Age of Exploration were that ideas and goods were being exchanged, wealth allowed them better ships and navigation tools, and they had the chance to claim land and territories. These factors contributed in bringing a European Golden Age.

Because of this, Asia then can be classified as a compilation of many key eras such as the Medieval Age in China and the Golden Age. Some may argue that the greed, power, land are the motives for a country to undertake a maritime program. Others may say that religion, commerce, trade are other possible motives that leads to a maritime program. The Kingdom of Spain & Portugal and the Ming Empire both took their grand maritime programs in the 15th & 16th centuries. When examining the societies of the Spanish/ Portuguese and the Chinese during the 15th and 16th centuries, one may say that both are trying to reach a common end goal of wanting their society to flourish at any means necessary.Although the two societies shared a few common interests to reach that common end goal(s), the difference in their motives did outweigh the few similarities they had between one another

During the 15th through 16th centuries, The Portuguese and Spanish explorers were very attracted to valuable resources, new land, and trade routes. These motives encouraged them to seek out new explorations and search for items that would benefit their home countries. Common resources that both the Spanish and Portuguese sought out included silks, porcelain, spices, persian horses, silver, and gold (Chasteen, 2001). Although the Portuguese and Spanish explored and sought out new land for many of the same reasons, they also had some different causes for exploration which were often very specific to the needs and goals of Portugal and Spain.

     The Age of Exploration was a time of struggle and wealth for many European countries. The pursuit of a trade route to the Far East led many countries across the ocean, looking for the great spice cities that were rumored by Marco Polo. These countries knew that whoever found the shortest or best route would become rich, very quickly. Explorers from many European countries embarked on journeys that not even they had any clue where they were going. This search for the Far East led to many discoveries that would otherwise have never been found.
