About 80% of teenagers today, have social media and approximately 40% of social media is used for communicating. I believe minors should be allowed to have social media because it has become a major part of today’s way of living by entertainment and has become a major form of communication.
Minors should use social media because it gives them a social life. CNN says that most people communicate over social media and interact with others, like their friends or just random people. First point, humans are extremely social creatures. Human survival has depended on socialization since the beginning of the human race and that adaptation was carried down to this day. Having social media can increase the amount of people teens have the chance to talk to on a daily basis. Humans (more specifically teens) love to make friends with people who share common interests, and what better place to find those kind of people than social media- a platform designed to socialize, meet new people, and connect with others.
Today, adolescents worry more about what they will miss on social media to focus on what is necessary while driving or anything else. As of today, this problem happens more and more every single day. Lives are lost from the distraction social media causes. Social media also distracts people from quality time spent with the people that they care about. Dr. Woods, who also has her Ph.D. in psychology, studied how social media related to sleep quality and a variety of other issues. The study Dr. Woods preformed consisted of 467 Scottish 11-15 year old’s completing a questionnaire in class. According to Dr. Woods, 54% of the time spent online by teens is spent on social media (Woods). It is an issue that more than half the time students are online they are on social media because if that time was cut down then problematic social networking would no longer cut into the adolescent’s sleep. I have noticed in my own personal life that being on social media is a compulsion. I have closed an app because I had gone through everything and my first instinct was to open it back up. I personally went through the compulsive part.
