Social media is expanding due to its popularity; however it may be used for many different reasons. Many minors use it as a form of entertainment and interaction between friends and even other people around the world. Although minors use social media as a form of entertainment and interaction, nevertheless minors should not be able to use social media because it causes health issues, exposes them to explicit content, and promotes violence. Social media causing health issues in minors is shown and proven in “In Defense of the Internet: The Relationship between Internet communication and Depression, Loneliness, Self-Esteem, and Perceived Social Support” and “Psychological impact of Social Networking Sites: A Psychological Theory” …show more content…
In “Does Social Media Perpetuate Youth Violence?” and “The Impact of Media Violence on Children and Adolescents: Opportunities for Clinical Interventions” the violence on social media is discussed and indicates it promotes violence behavior in minors. In “Does Social Media Perpetuate Youth Violence?” it directly states that “Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have become a platform for youth violence… gangs used these social media sites to make threats, “call out” rival gangs, promote violence and recruit members. This activity led to real “Stomp-Outs”, real shootings, and real deaths and… a new trend called “Fight Compilations” has become increasingly popular on sites such as World Star Hip Hop and YouTube” (Bostic). This shows that social media is too violent for minors to use. Likewise, in “The Impact of Media Violence on Children and Adolescents: Opportunities for Clinical Interventions” it is specified that “children’s exposure to media violence plays an important role in the etiology of violent behavior” (Beresin). This shows that social media causes violence. In both articles, evidence there is strong correlation between social media use and violence in minors is presented. Consequently, minors should not be able to use social since it promotes
Social media allows minors to connect and interact with others. They learn to be social with others and make friends. Minors tend to be very shy and sometimes self conscious of themselves. Them being introduced to social media gives them a chance to open up an express themselves, once again with limits. In addition to this, it also allows minors
The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
About 80% of teenagers today, have social media and approximately 40% of social media is used for communicating. Some of the popular social sites today may include Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Facebook. I believe minors should be allowed to have social media because it has become a major part of today’s way of living by entertainment and has become a major form of communication.
“While fights can erupt at any school, the theory is that violence often shows its ugly head-first on social media before it occurs” (Solnik, 2016). Any Web site that allows social interaction is considered and referred to as social media sites. Today’s teens, like our students, has a portal for entertainment and communication, which has significantly grown in the last few years. “For this reason, it is important that parents become aware of the nature of social media sites, given that not all of them are healthy environments for children and adolescents” (O’Keeffee & Clarke-Pearson,
Minors should use social media because it gives them a social life. CNN says that most people communicate over social media and interact with others, like their friends or just random people. If CNN says that people everywhere talk on social media then minors should be able to interact as well so they can be informed about what’s going on and do what everyone else does. In addition minors use social media so they can make
One reason to let minors use social media is for communication use. A minor might use their web pages to communicate with family that might not live in the same place they live. Minors use social media to be able to communicate with people all over the world. In addition to minors being able to communicate with family elsewhere, minors can also use web pages for making friends. Minors use web pages to make new friends
Teens and even adults post fights of themselves and other people on platforms like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. The crime rate in the last four years has gone up 780 percent due to social media, and about 650 people have been charged with crimes due to social media. “A blockbuster violent movie has a direct effect on crime as more individuals are exposed to screen violence, but also has an indirect effect on people as people are drawn away from an alternate activity and its associated level of violence” (Dahl 681). Violent movies and social media platforms are the main causes as to why the crime rate has gone up. Social media is everywhere and people cannot go about their daily lives without seeing some form of social
The number one cause of adolescent health issues is not illness, but violence around and towards them. Has this always been the issue? A new development within the past decade has been distribution of smartphones. These items may seem completely devoid of association to violence, but when viewed further in depth these handhold devices can be seen as a tool for more than innocent communication. The phones are able to perform similar functions to a computer, act as a phone, and a high tech pager. With the development of the smartphone come more methods of communicating and transmitting messages, the realm of social media. The display of violence and threats in social media influence adolescents, perpetuates fear, and is carried on by the same
Social media seems to be one of the many hot topics of discussion recently, and consequently many people have the false sense of security that they have a profound knowledge on how it affects the health of the teenage population. A sedentary lifestyle, decreased sleep, as well as other physical health conditions seem to come to mind when one links health and social media. However, there is a much bigger problem that can go unnoticed because it can be impossible to see: the impact it has on mental and emotional health. These branches of health are just as important, and even arguably more important than physical health is. Social media can be utilized to connect with distant friends and express oneself; however, teenagers should refrain from the overuse of social media due to its detrimental effects on their mental and emotional health.
Young children under the age of sixteen should not be allowed to use social media. The reason is because our overuse of social media is a bit frightening. Using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is equivalent to creating an open door into our daily, personal lives. How you may ask? Social media gives us the freedom to share personal information and pictures with our friends and family, and although we can change our security settings to say that, “Hey, we are only going to share this with friends and family”, all the pictures and status updates we put online stays online for the world to see and not just whoever is on our friends’ lists. In an article by, Peter W. Cardon and Bryan Marshall from the Journal of Business Communication, they explore the facts of how many people young and old use social media as well as explore the facts of how it is used. From a study they performed in 2012, about 86% of teenagers aged from
In agreement with the first study, a study by Boxer and colleagues focused on mass media’s effect on those already at risk for violence and anti-social behavior: high school students and juvenile delinquents (Boxer, Huesmann, Bushman, O’Brien, & Moceri, 2009). The research team sought to determine whether an increased number of risk factors would correlate with an increase in violent and anti-social behavior. Participants were asked to report their digital media habits throughout their childhood; which were ranked an a 5 point scale according to amount of visible violence; and they were also asked to provide researchers with information and complete surveys on potential risk factors (Boxer, Huesmann, Bushman, O’Brien, & Moceri, 2009). The researchers identified a risk factor as any characteristic or event that would leave an individual more prone to an act of aggression such as an abusive parent or poor school
Social media is one of the most common ways for people to communicate anywhere and at any time in modern society. Some people think that it is beneficial to have in society. Although, many people are starting to see negative effects arise from the use of social media as well. These negative effects are increasing and becoming more problematic every day. The disadvantages of social media far outweigh the advantages. Social media effects everyone in society, especially teenagers by negatively impacting their lives, face-to-face interactions, and mental health.
In discussions of social media, one controversial issue has been social media is good to use for children. On the one hand, some people argue social media is okay for children to use freely. On the other hand, other people even contend social media is for children to use with regulation. My own view is that we should understand and regulating the use of social media by young children, because overusing social media can create strong addictions, develop mental or physical disorders, and waste our time.
In recent times, the news media has cried out against violent media, painting it as the leading cause for youth violence. Following events such as the Columbine massacre, news sources have vilified violent media, claiming that it is a primary cause of violent behavior in youths. This analysis provides firm research on the subject from the opposing and supporting sources, giving a thorough definition to the term “violent media” and brings forth evidence that other psychological effects and environmental factors are more significant causes of increased youth aggression than violent media.
Social media sites allow millions of people to interact with friends, family and anyone around the world. A large portion of social media users are teenagers; researchers and parents both believe that social media is having a multitude of possible effects on teenagers. This literature review will analyze research of the positive and negative effects social media are having on today’s impressionable youth. Much of the research focuses on the age range of 10-16 from well-to-do families and college students. Understanding the online environment that teenagers live in can help parents relate to their children and teach then about the dangers and benefits of being on the Internet.
