The Causes of Homelessness Homelessness has affected many people; more people are becoming homeless every year. Over half a million people are homeless.138,000 people are children under 18. There are many reasons why people become homeless. Some of the reasons are divorce, poverty, mental illness, domestic violence, drug addiction, and sexuality.
People can become homeless because of divorce, usually one person gets the house and the other person has to leave. If the person that had to leave was unemployed it will be harder for them to afford a place to live and find a job. It will also be hard for them to pay child support if they have to. Being addicted to drugs can destroy someone’s finances. Expensive drug habitats can lead to loss of a job, illness, debt, arrest, and even death. A family with an addict parent can become homeless because the parent is spending all the money on drugs, so they can’t pay for anything else.
The last reason is someone’s sexuality. Many homeless youth identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. More than 1 in 4 of LGBT youth get kicked out of their home. They face rejection from their families and discrimination. They have a harder time finding shelters that accept and respect them. LGBT are at a risk of violence and abuse compared to heterosexuals. Transgender people are even more at risk because of lack of acceptance. Some shelters even put up signs that say transgender people aren’t allowed. The number one reason LGBT people are homeless is because of family rejection. They are 62% more likely to commit suicide than non-lgbt homeless youth.
Overall homeless can happen for many different reasons. People can become homeless from divorce, poverty, mental illness, domestic violence, drug addiction, and sexuality. Many people become homeless every year. Some of these things can be avoided like LGBT youth becoming homeless, if their family would accept
