Reclassification: Arguments Against Legalizing Marijuana

Legalizing marijuana will lead to many societal benefits that will reduce illegal activity while helping the government control the use of the substance and making a profit that can be used to help taxpayers. Marijuana is not a dangerous drug and should be legalized because it does not cause harm to anyone and by legalizing marijuana the government will take control of marijuana distribution and it can benefit a lot of people in many ways. If the government controls the market for marijuana people would no longer be in danger of trying to acquire it illegally and there would be tax for selling marijuana which will benefit both the government and society. By legalizing marijuana the government can make laws about its use.

Depending on the generation of people who bring up the topic their side on being for or against legalization is usually based on information handed down by someone else opposed to knowing facts. Unless a person has dealt with the subject at hand personally, one should not pass judgment. Being a marijuana user does not make anyone more of a bad person as going to church does not make anyone inherently more of a saint. Legalizing marijuana, a plant used for both medical and recreational purposes, can bring an abundant amount of positive attributes to benefit our country.

Not to mention, legalizing marijuana will also take away money used for stopping illegal transportation and distribution of marijuana therefore that money and manpower saved could be used for the termination of other more important crimes. Taking it off the streets for illegal sell also helps the consumer because distributers will have guidelines given by the FDA as to what can be cut into the drug. Street marijuana is hard to decipher what other dangerous substances may have been cut into the drug.

It would also probably help reduce prison sizes. Most importantly though it would result in the major loss of business for drug dealers. I would have to agree, they shouldn’t criminalize marijuana for medical purposes. I feel that’s equivalent to denying a cancer patient treatment. IF, those who choose to or need this form of medication have the right to take it why punish them for something out of their control. An individual should have to full opportunity to receive medical marijuana as an alternative form of medication. The federal law shouldn’t have the right to punish people whose are handling and managing this drug correctly.
