Redefine Freedom: The Lie that Benefits us All

Flags burning under raining bombs, gunshots echoing through a field of raining terror, while hiding underground for the day where humanity can roam free again; situations as so aren’t exactly what people imagine when thinking about one’s future. Every death was honored by those who lived; lives lost during wars of any kind are unlike lives lost in our country today, not for the value of those once living are greater than another, but from how much those lives mean to this day. Establishment and preservation of freedom wasn’t easy and will never be easy; many people served until their last breath, for the freedoms of our lives today. That is why we must continue to grasp for freedom, and to establish and preserve our freedom most effectively we must have the heart to be free, and have united dedication to freedom itself.

With more change to the definition of the freedom the word becomes less and less free. Just like the pigs, the government, in Animal Farm, they would change the seven commandments on the barn wall; therefore, giving themselves new powers and privileges, while restricting the other animals, common peoples, freedom and power. “Harrison Bergeron” short story also follows the same ideas as Animal Farm, by the government controlling the people’s freedom so much that they couldn’t think, act, or speak making them not free at all. In “Harrison Bergeron” it says, “If Hazel hadn’t been able to come up with an answer to this, question, George couldn’t have supplied one. A siren was going off in his head.” This shows that the people have lost the freedom of thinking and speaking without even knowing. This happened by the people in the story being born into a not free society, even though they think there free because they were raised believing they were living a free life. The story “Harrison Bergeron” show the importants of freedom over equality because freedom you have the power to be or achieve anything you want to be able to while equality, everyone’s equal and there’s nothing to strive for. This is just like Animal Farm and how at first all of the animals could read and write, but as time went on only the pigs learn how

As human beings, we strive for freedom, and as we see in both our world and the one in the story, no one is truly free. “They know that they, like the child, are not free,” writes the narrator, showing the reader that although the citizens apparently live “free” in a perfect society, inside their souls, they are not free. There are no slaves in this utopia, as described by the narrator, but in actuality, the child’s freedom is taken from it, similar to slavery.

A majority of people that chose to accept freedom believing it would give them better opportunities in life soon realised that life as a free person wasn’t as positive as they initially thought.

Freedom is a capacity that helps people to choose, to behave without restrictions and prohibitions. It is a term that defines people’s rights and it helps people to behave independently. Freedom that is mostly expressed in the language of rights determines people’s acts as long as it respects the rights of other individuals. Self-respect and intelligence are also derived from being free. Kurt Vonnegut wrote a story named “Harrison Bergeron”(1962) which demonstrates the importance of freedom and being free. In the story it can be seen that government to protect the equality of human beings uses the technology. The story demonstrates how equality is one of the fundamental principles in the society. “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion,” is a quote written by Albert Camus, which displays the complexity of defining the term freedom. Jean-Paul Sartre’s play “The Flies,” defines the concept of freedom as the accountability of one’s own guilt, which allows individuals to recognize their own freedom. Furthermore, an individual that accepts accountability for one’s own guilt and responsibility for the city, or complete isolation, is living in freedom. Perhaps a most straightforward understanding of freedom is the laissez-faire emphasis on limiting the power of government to interfere in economic and social matters. Our world today is filled with unnecessary oppression. Slavery is one common form of human oppression, but there are numerous other forms as well. War, death, hunger, and sadness caused the elders in the society of The Giver to force each citizen to live extremely structured, controlled lives. That structure and control effected each person’s ability to live unique, private, and free lives. The elders in The Giver wanted all the citizens in the community to be undifferentiated for their own safety, so they greatly censored all citizens. Lack of freedom to pursue individual happiness is, indeed, a form of oppression not only faced by fictional book characters, but also by twenty-first century Americans. American society is changing so rapidly that we as independent Americans must decide whether safety, or freedom, is more important.

Freedom is defined as being at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint; furthermore, to be released from an external force or control (dictionary). “Harrison Bergeron” is a short story that is in a society where the government is trying to make everyone equal, using handicaps to decrease certain individuals traits or qualities that are above average. In the novella Anthem, the people and society went back to the past when they are far into the future. The people are living in caves and have seemed to have lost or forgotten what people before them have discovered and believed. “Harrison Bergeron” and Anthem are very different but also have many similarities, especially referring to family and education.

The power or right to act, speak or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. A word created by man to escape the bonds of tyranny to express the idea of what it means to persist one's own ambitions. Freedom. Freedom is not the absence of confinement but the will to achieve freedom when imprisoned. After carefully concluding the reading done over this semester one is able to clearly understand the confinement these early Americans felt and their decision to achieve a form of freedom. Freedom has always existed but it is the history of this nation that will define what actions freedom takes.

Many ideas are important within the American culture, but to the American sense of patriotism, freedom is most fundamental. The idea of freedom is central to the American politics – which is at times referred to as liberty. Since the birth of the nation, freedom has been the vocabulary of the American language and its importance cannot be underestimated. The Declaration of Independence, for instance, ranks liberty as an inalienable right. On the other hand, the Constitution reckons that it purposes to protect civilians’ liberty. The importance of freedom has even stretched further than the political arena and has prompted the birth of civil rights movements and other activist protests. The Cold War and the Civil War were all for the cause of freedom. The importance that Americans attach to freedom can also be demonstrated from the erection of statues, banishment of slavery, use of liberty poles and a right to vote for adults. For many years, women and the African Americans have for a long time fought against denial and infringement of their freedom . However, given the importance that Americans affiliate to freedom in the conceptualization of their country, it has been the subject of modifications over the course of years especially before the Revolutionary War.

Just as every plants and animal as evolved and changed throughout the course of its existence so has the definition of freedom while its’ meaning has stayed constant. Freedom has a perpetual meaning, however, humans have tried to change the definition based upon moral, ethical, social, and legal ideals that have through history been debated upon and never satisfied all. Freedoms’ perpetual meaning is that everyone, no matter race or gender, has the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. As time progresses and new ideas flourish the definition of freedom either flourishes along with society or takes a drastic spiral downward usually with the opinions of humanity. Freedom means, to carry out one own choices, actions without coercion or constraint by necessity or circumstances. Fate often take a hand in the distillation of freedom. When this distillation occurs at weaker levels, benevolent slavery begins. A benevolent master usually receives gratitude from those slaves who are aware of their good fortune and will, in turn, work willingly. This form of slave's future is relatively certain, assured and predictable. Their offspring, born into a benevolent slavery, find the thought of freedom disturbing.
