In The Kite Runner , by Khaled Hosseini, Amir needs to to earn redemption.Redemption is the act of being saved from error. Amir has hurt many people in his life and needs to redeem himself. Amir has a father named Baba who has been hiding a secret from Amir. Amir has his childhood best friend named Hassan. Amir needs to accept the secret Baba has, amend his problems with Hassan, and heal himself. Amir has to accept the fact that he and Hassan are brothers and Baba has been hiding the secret for his entire life. When Amir was younger he and Hassan were best friends. They did everything together. Baba always knew that they were brothers but never told him. When he goes to talk to Rahim Kahn the truth comes out about Amir and Hassan. Amir has a difficult time accepting the truth, “ How could you hide this from me? From him? I bellowed” (Hosseini 223). He can’t believe he has been lied too for so long in his life. He can’t accept the truth. Amir thinks about how everything his entire life was a big lie. He begins to figure out clues that made sense. He understands why Baba lied to him and why he had to. He begins to …show more content…
When they were younger they grew apart due to an event neither one of them talked about. Amir felt different about Hassan and didn't want to interact with him as much. They never seem to be the same with each other no matter how much they tried. Hassan wants to be friends again but Amir says, “ I want you to stop harassing me.I want you to go away” (Hosseini 88). Amir can't seem to forgive himself for letting Hassan get hurt. He has trouble accepting this and instead of trying to amend problems he pushes Hassan away. Amir becomes older and has learned that Hassan has been killed but has a son in Kabul. Amir decides he must go and get Hassan's child. In doing so he believes that he is making things right with Hassan. Amir believes that saving Hassan's kid will solve any problems he had with him in the
Their relationship doesn’t flourish because Baba is still showing Hassan more attention than Amir. Amir realises this when Baba is concerned for Hassan and the way he is acting, clueless of confrontation Hassan had with Assef. Amir believed that being the winner of the Kite Running Tournament will make Baba love him more because he has used his talent, to become well known in the community.
Baba could’ve steered Amir to helping Hassan’s son in the end. It was Amir’s decision to save Sohrab in the end, it also could’ve been Baba’s dying wish; to help Hassan. In chapter 18, Amir puts the puzzle pieces together for Baba being Hassan’s father and also realizes that what Rahim Khan wanted was for Amir to redeem his own sins and Baba’s as well. And he decides to save Sohrab. “On the rickshaw ride back to Rahim Khan’s apartment, I remembered Baba saying that my problem was that someone had always done my fighting for me.” This proves that Amir had decided to redeem himself and Baba by fighting for what is the truth. Baba’s redemption followed Amir by Amir going to save Hassan’s son from the Taliban raided country. Eventually, this can be turned into Amir’s own redemption for what he had done to
Amir and Baba do not try to involve themselves with Hassan and Ali. Just like when Amir starts to understand the low social status Hassan has and accept the status quo. He says “That Hassan would grow up illiterate like Ali
While Amir is lying in the dark, with nothing but his own thoughts, he feels that his guilt is taking over his life. He realizes that he is going to get away with his betrayal and yet he feels terrible. He decides that the only way he is going to live with his remorse is to ignore Hassan, blot him out, so he does not have to think about his sin. Amir’s guilt is so great that he cannot bear to have Hassan under the same roof, so he commits another sin. He lies to his father and accuses Hassan of stealing. “…I took a couple of the envelopes of cash from the pile of gifts and my watch, and tiptoed out…I lifted Hassan’s mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it…I knocked on Baba’s door and told what I hoped would be the last in a long
Amir's entire life had been haunted by what he saw happen to Hassan. Although he was a child at the time, he couldn't accept his shortcoming during a time of need. He was jealous of his father for being able to stand up for himself and others and Hassan's undying loyalty to him. He developed a pattern of behavior - of covering up his mistakes and hiding his past – that he could not rid himself of until he suffered like Hassan did. He made it up to Hassan by saving his son, and he made it up to himself by suffering the way he
While Amir defeats his final obstacle to win Baba’s approval, he reciprocally falls down and fails to show courage in Hassan’s rape. Amir assumes that Hassan “was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba” as he watches Assef sodomize Hassan, and he “actually aspired to cowardice” (77). The atonement of Amir’s sins to Baba sparks the commencement of Amir’s betrayal to Hassan. Furthermore, Amir runs away and hides from his sins in Amerca knowing that he cannot gain the courage to redeem himself and completely fulfill his quest to adulthood. Nonetheless, Rahim Khan provides Amir an opportunity to accomplish his redemption. After decades of hiding, Rahim Khan calls Amir to tell him to “come” back to Kabul since “there is a way to be good again” (192). Amir must successfully accomplish his final obligation to complete his quest to maturity. In addition, Amir must stop hiding like a boy and begin to stand up like a man. As Amir returns to Kabul to save Sohrab, and ultimately redeem himself, he must fight Assef one last time, which results in Amir’s “body being broken – just how badly I wouldn’t find out until later – but I felt healed. Healed at last” (289). Amir now receives his deserved punishment and, most importantly, he learns to stand up and finally matures into a man. Although Amir completes his quest to adulthood, readers must realize that Amir must ultimately grant Sohrab a
On contrary to Baba not understanding Amir, Amir does not understand Baba. He has done so much to try to win Baba’s approval and his love, but nothing seems to work out well. Amir ended up
The book explains how Amir had an underlying hate for Hassan, even though they partook in so many activities together during their childhood. One example of Amir’s underlying hate and betrayal towards Hassan was when Hassan was getting attacked in the alleyway while Amir was watching it occur, and not taking action. Based off Hassan’s loyalty, if the person getting attacked in the alleyway was Amir, and Hassan was watching, Hassan would have taken action and helped him, but Amir would not do the same. The reason why Amir did not take action was because he wanted to gain affection and love from his father, Baba, as explained in the book, “… Assef was right: Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba.”
Amir’s 12th birthday has just passed and Baba had bought him lots of expensive and sentimental gifts. As a scheme to get rid of Hassan , Amir framed him as if he stole his money and expensive watch. Thinking Baba would make Hassan and Ali leave after this incident , Amir told his dad and Hassan told him that he did it , even though he didn’t. Baba’s reaction surprised Amir and angered him, he forgave Hassan. At this point Amir knows he’s wrong and simply admits he was a liar. Ali also moves away with Hassan. Hosseini states “I was a liar, a cheat, and a thief” (Hosseini 105). In other words , Hosseini shows the reader that Amir is conscious of his doing ,although Hassan was extremely loyal to him. This regards to honesty because if Amir was just honest from that point on he could have both redeemed himself and their family situation wouldn’t have gotten that far.
He tried to avoid Hassan as much as possible. Amir did not have the heart to face Hassan after what he had seen.He sent Hassan away from his life by blaming him for stealing his money. Hassan left and so did Amir’s innocence. He was no longer that pure and innocent Amir who once read stories to his friend Hassan. He was a completely new boy, who had lied to his father because of Hassan’s Rape. Amir had betrayed Hassan.Amir was not naive
Weight loss, depression, and physical illnesses take their toll on him; however, Amir does not go completely unscathed, he suffers from guilt, irritability, insomnia, and nausea. Unable to accept responsibility for his actions, Amir decides the only way to stop the bleeding is to get rid of Hassan. “Baba would dismiss them, there would be some pain, but life would move on. I wanted that, to move on, to forget, to start with a clean slate. I wanted to be able to breathe again.”
Sooner or later someone would find out the truth, and it was Amir. Rahim Khan, Baba’s closest friend told Amir the truth because he felt that closure was needed before he died. “How could he have lied to me all those years? To Hassan? He had sat me on his lap when I was little, looked me straight in the eyes, and said, there is only one sin.
His actions and words shape Amir in a negative way, causing Amir to have a have a distorted image of a father-son relationship. In addition, Baba’s actions that would prove him
Baba and Amir were together at home most days but Baba would pay more attention to Hassan and how he was doing and that would make Amir jealous and feel unappreciated. When Amir set up Hassan he not only made Baba look down upon Hassan but also gained a better relationship with Baba. Once Hassan left Baba and Amir went on a long and dangerous journey together. They escape from Kabul and see people being killed and their own town turning into a scary, unknown place. Then they end up in California starting a new life together.
Amir's relationship with Baba hasn't been good ever since Baba's wife died a couple of days after the birth of Amir. Amir always thought that his father hated him a little for killing his wife. Amir says" I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all I have killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess." Furthermore, Amir is not turning out the way Baba wished we would. As a kid Baba was very athletic and wasn't afraid to stand up to what he believed in. Amir however, likes to read books and is shy; because of the major difference in personalities their father son relationship is not prosperous. In the novel we don't learn much about Hassan's and Ali's relationship. Nevertheless, we do learn that Ali and Baba knew each
