Everyone in “ Harrison Bergeron” were being treated equally because they are being treated differently, they have leaders that are treating them poorly, and all of these problems could be because of laws 211th, 212th, and 213th.

“Harrison Bergeron”by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., is a story about a teen that speaks out about the equal but unfair government in a dystopian future. “Harrison Bergeron” encapsulates the importance of celebrating each other’s differences and how equality ruins that. The setting of “Harrison Bergeron” is always in the distant future in a bleak place where mediocrity is admired. Because of the feeling of dullness in the setting, it gives a platform for the government to equalize everyone.The movie’s setting is very 1950s influenced, while the short-story is timelessly bleak.

These two characters showed significant psychological work in hopes of changing their “problematic” social identity. Both of these characters were conscious of the stigmas that surrounded their identities, each, however, had distinct ways in which they dealt with those stigmas and changing their meanings as they grew older. Many would say that the way in which they were able to transform their identities meant either embracing it or denying one’s own identity fully as the film progressed and new societal pressures arose.

The “Harrison Bergeron” has similarities to my family such as Points of view because in my family everyone has a different option on things. Another thing is standing up for what you believe in, in the story it shows a lot of how concrete Harrison belief is that the handicaps are bad and how he is willing to challenge the whole government over it. There are many families but all of them will have the differences good and bad.

Everyone has things that they feel isn’t right and should be different, and most people try to change what they think is wrong. Kurt Vonnegut and Carole Boston Weatherford use this universal human feeling in their short stories. In “Harrison Bergeron” he doesn’t like that people are limited because of handicaps and can’t reach their full potential. In “Freedom on the Menu The Greensboro Sit-ins” the characters wants to be able to have the same rights as the whites and starts “sit-ins” to protest. In both “ Harrison Bergeron” and “Freedom on the Menu The Greensboro Sit-ins,” we learn that in life they’re things that you don’t agree with and you have to stand up against, regardless of the outcome either good or bad.

Harrison Bergeron is an Icarus tale written by Kurt Vonnegut about a society where everyone is forced to be equal. This story takes place in 2081 where people have handicaps to create an environment where everyone has the same physical and mental capabilities. Harrison Bergeron is the main character who tries to overcome his oppressive society and be free. Harrison achieves his freedom, but it is short lived and he perishes soon after. This is almost identical to Ovid’s Icarus, where Icarus flies towards the sun to be free, but dies soon after. In the story Harrison Bergeron, Vonnegut is warning the read not to dwell on insecurities because they trap people in negativity, cause people to lose sight of surroundings, and weigh people down.

In society, it is perceived as peculiar to act different than everyone else; to go against the norm is against the rules, in a way. In “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, George and Hazel Bergeron’s son gets the ultimate punishment for wanting to be different. Breaking the chains of his “handicaps” such as weights hung around his neck and glasses with thick distorted lenses, Harrison Bergeron tried to persuade a small group at a television station to remove their handicaps as well. He had just escaped from prison and called himself the Emperor.
