Response Paper #1 Christianity and the Reformation “Reflections on Persistent Whiggism and Its Antidotes in the Study of Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-century Intellectual History Richard A. Muller’s “Reflection on Persistent Whiggism and Its Antidotes” presents Muller’s argument regarding recent methods of study of the Reformation. Whiggism refers to not simply a party, but an idea of progressivism that projects itself upon the past. I like to use the word lens to describe this phenomena as the research being critiqued is viewing the past through the lens of modern thought. Muller also offers ways to reform this system for a more accurate study of the Reformation. He gives five main issues, and systematically describes the problems with each one, with supporting historical examples. Instead of being looked at through the historical context to help us understand the motives and theology of the Reformation, often the Reformation is looked at through a modern understanding of what this time period looked like. Muller encourages historians to use contextual vocabulary to describe and understand the time period in which these men shared their ideas in order to more fully and accurately understand them. An example he uses is looking to historical dictionaries and texts to help understand readings in their context and what they meant during the time they were written in order to extricate the authors’ true intent. Furthermore, Muller talks about the importance of properly placing people and ideas within their historical and intellectual context. This shows the linkage between thought and ideology of the time and the implications and radicalism not from the perspective of modern thinkers, but in the context of the time and society in which these men

The Protestant Reformation of the Catholic Church devastated the religious unity of Christian Europe, resulting in a great deal of antagonism, which in turn led to the persecutions, denial of civil rights, expulsion, and ultimately the torture and death of many men, women and children. The ongoing conflict was not consigned to one distinct European nation, but was experienced in every European nation that the Catholic Church ruled and reigned. There was no worldview in Europe at that time that allowed for the religious differences of men to coexist peaceably.

The Reformation was quite a time of change in Europe during the 16th century. Many people studying the Reformation and learning about what happened at this time make ask several different questions about it. The main question being “How did the Reformation remake Europe?” After studying the Reformation, there are many different topics that could be discussed. 13. ‘01 Discuss the political and social consequences of the Protestant Reformation in the first half of the sixteenth century.
Throughout history there have been examples of religion being regarded as traditional and of people dissenting from the traditional religion. This essay will trace the footsteps of tradition and dissent of Christianity in England between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries by looking at the statement “… a previous generation’s “dissent” itself becomes “tradition”, and a previously dominant tradition becomes dissent.” (Tradition and Dissent p72). With particular reference to the differences between Protestants and Catholics.
The intent of this paper is to evaluate the distinct character and quality of the expressions of the Protestant Reformation. This paper will discuss Lutheran Reformation, The Anabaptist, and The English Puritans as well as the Catholic Reformation also known as the Counter Reformation. It is the hope that after the reader has had the opportunity to view each of the characteristics and the expressions of each of the reformation the reader will have a better understanding of each and will be able to articulate the differences of each.

When we look at the Protestant Reformation we will see that key individuals such as Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli, even though they are protesting similar things, develop differences upon the way, especially in the way they interpret Scripture. These differences, in any movement, will ultimately affect the outcome and the development of the Protestant movement that started in 1517 with Luther. This essay aims to examine these differences between Luther and Zwingli and find out how the Protestant movement was affected by their differing opinions. Firstly, Luther and Zwingli’s reformations will be observed individually and what they each stood for and then we will discuss their major differences and the influence they had on the Protestant movement.
The attendant effects of Martin Luther’s reformation in the early period of the sixteenth century occasioned by his posting of the 95 theses that raised objections to some of the then prevalent practices of the Roman Catholic Church eventually led to a significant breakaway from the church of a relatively more liberal Christian sect known as the “Protestant”. It is worthy of note however that the Roman Catholic Church tried albeit unsuccessfully to placate the breakaway by instituting a “counter-Reformation” but this only achieved a cleansing of the church internally without achieving much in its most important mandate to prevent the protestant breakaway. Consequently, Europe was enmeshed in bloody religious war largely between forces loyal to the papacy in Rome and those who sympathized with the runaway protestant movement. As a result, the Roman Catholic Church invariably began to lose its pole position in the scheme of things in an already divided Europe.
The renaissance and the reformation were two of the most significant changes in history that has shaped our world today. Both of these great time periods are strikingly similar in some ways and totally different in others. This is because the renaissance was a change from religion to humanism whether it is in art or literature; it is where the individual began to matter. However, the reformation was,” in a nutshell,” a way to reform the church and even more so to form the way our society is today. The first half of this paper will view the drop in faith, the economic powers, and the artistic and literary changes during the renaissance, while the second half will view the progresses and changes the church makes during the reformation.
