The Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legal document used by schools in order to map out a plan of action for those that are in need of special education. An IEP is created for students who have been classified with a disability and are between the ages of 3 and 21. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written statement of the educational program designed to meet a child’s individual educational needs. The article goes into great detail over the fact that co-teaching, when implemented correctly, has the potential of really enhancing the learning of all students (Conderman & Hedin, 2014, p.359). Before any co-teaching can happen though the article elaborates on the fact that a teacher needs to know who their students are. And when differentiating instruction a teacher needs to be able to address a “students’ unique strengths, interest, skills, and readiness” (Conderman & Hedin, 2014, p. 353). After all helping each child learn, whatever that looks like, is the ultimate goal, and this article shows how teachers can do this with a co-teacher.

Special education students are delayed in there learning process. To resolve the gap in learning abilities Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) obliges by law that all public schools to create an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for every child that receives special educational services. IDEA inspires to create an effective relationship amongst the parents and school that boost an educational team with the goals of providing the student with proper services (Mueller, 2009). In Each IEP meeting it involves the IEP team, IEP sections that addresses the student with disabilities educational progress.

An IEP (Individual Education Plan) is used, before a term starts the school will hold a meeting for any outside agencies, the parents and teachers of the child to meet and discuss the next best plan of education for the child. Discussing the child’s interests preferred learning methods, targets, flexibility and interagency working with the child.

In 1991 the Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was replaced by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This law was passed to provide free and appropriate public education to every child with a disability. In the American system the curriculum serves 5, 000 students and more than 20 countries and we need to review and look at the IEP process. The question that has spark concerns is to look at students direct IEP and how we can look to evaluate it? How students benefits from an IEP and what would be the first logical steps to change the process. We have a mixture of students who are not all English speaking students from all backgrounds and have some disabilities. I’m not here to complain about the teachers in your system, you have wonderful teachers who capture student’s interest and encourage students learning. But we are here to address the IEP’s process issue.

The purpose of schooling is to help our special education students to be functional and independent in the real world. I want them to learn how to deal with real life situations and to be able to understand and adapt to the changes it may bring. Special education has faced many changes during the last century. During this time there have been many opinions on the way students with differences should be taught and treated. This paper will discuss the history of special education during the twentieth century. We will also discuss the laws associated with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Finally we will discuss the current and future challenges that the laws have on special education.

One of the most controversial issues facing educators today is the topic of educating students with disabilities, specifically through the concept of inclusion. Inclusion is defined as having every student be a part of the classroom all working together no matter if the child has a learning disability or not (Farmer) (Inclusion: Where We’ve Been.., 2005, para. 5). The mentally retarded population has both a low IQ and the inability to perform everyday functions. Activities such as eating, dressing, walking, and in some cases, talking can be hopeless for a child with mental retardation.

Throughout my career I have always been amazed by how little regular education teachers know about the special education process. On numerous occasions I have had teachers ask me, “Why don’t you just test him, to see if he qualifies?” And when I tried to explain that there was more to the process then just testing, most of the time the teachers would walk away in disgust, without knowing the steps we had to follow in the process.

Co-Teaching is a research based instructional strategy defined by Hang and Rabren in their article called, “An Examination of Co-Teaching Perspectives and Efficiency Indicators”, as “two or more professionals delivering substantive instruction to a diverse, or blended, group of students in a single physical space.” The role of co-teaching is becoming ever more vital, and prevalent within inclusive classroom settings. As Susan E. Gately, and Frank J GatelyJr., in their article “Understanding Co-teaching Components," state the demand for a co-teaching model increases, so does the need for its structural advancement, and effectiveness. Co-teaching provides many opportunities for two teachers, both a general education and a special education teacher to effectively communicate, build positive relationships, advance professional growth, and model desired behaviors, as well as collaborative interpersonal skills for students.      Special Education 332 (Education and Inclusion of Individuals with Special Needs) has been enlightening for me as a secondary mathematics educator. In the beginning of the semester, my feelings towards special education were those of apathy and insensitivity. I now understand that my feelings were due to my lack of knowledge and my judgment based on stereotypes.
