According to John Dewey’s definition of a liberal education, the education that I have received at Jefferson R7 High School has prepared me for life beyond high school. The three Rs of education, reading, writing, and arithmetic, was a large focus of my schooling when in elementary school, which formed the base in which I would later grow upon. The education that was given to me formed a well-rounded student that has the tools to solve problems and find information that is sought after.
When I was in elementary school my teachers focused on learning to read and defining vocab words. Every day Mrs. Wright, the teacher, would have the class gather in a circle and go over our vocab words for the week. Learning to read and focusing on learning complex words gave me the ability to learn other subjects by being able to do my own research by reading information about other subjects. Another subject that was focused on greatly, was math. Every day, the class would have to timed tests, where they would have to answer a certain amount of math questions in a minute. The tests would get more and more complicated every week. What seems like a small action, formed a foundation that I was able to build on throughout my schooling and still build on today. I went from practicing basic multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division, to executing complex problems in pre-calculus much later in life using the same operations I learned in elementary school.
