Reflective Essay On Race And Racism

As a returning student, it has been my resolve to pursue an academic arena that will be edifying in lieu of pursuing something purely for career advancement. Currently, I am a liberal arts major with a focused on political science and criminal justice. Over the past few semesters, I have elected to enroll in a few African American studies classes. At the onset of this journey, I would have simply categorized myself as an African American inner city, male and as such, an automatic incidental assumption within our society would have equated my race as an expert related to race and racism. Notwithstanding the pigment of my skin, which inevitably links my life, cultural, and ethnicity to racial injustice. I would define “race” as a particular segment of any culture identifiable by grouping or culture and “racism” as a policy or position that discriminates against another class of people. Racism is simply about promoting one’s self interest in a financial, spiritual and intellectual means. Moreover, we’ve grown accustomed to recognizing the act of “racism” but not necessarily understanding the role that race, culture or entitlement has played in shaping it. Any failure to address “race and racism” in my field of study is quite complicated since “race and racism” is often talked about but never truly addressed unless it related to health care.
