Effective teaching involves effective communicating, planning, managing and evaluating the actual process of instructing. Reflective teaching plays a major role in making of informed decision relating to the effective teaching strategies (Mabrina, Church & Tayler, 2010). Through reflective teaching, teachers can be able to do a critical analysis their actions and their decisions. Reflective teaching allows teachers to foresee the impact of the teaching methods and in the process may make relevant changes in improving their strategies. In addition, the teacher gains a deeper understanding by scrutinizing the goals of the teaching practice. I am writing this reflective journal in accordance with the CNO`s reflective practice standards and the LEARN model. Though my time on 600A has only just begun I have learned so much. Like many second year students, this is my first experience in the hospital. It has proven to be much different than my previous clinical experiences. My time with my first client stands out in my mind as a key learning experience.

Reflective practice is constantly changing as it adds in the learning gained from experiences. Reflective practice links events together and compares what is already known and make a decisions on the basis of this comparison. Reflective practice helps nurses to become expert practitioners due to the fact it operates from a deep understanding of the total events. Reflective practice could also be beneficial for patients and service users as it gives better standards of patient safety and is focused on individual and also evidence based care derived from their needs.

Discuss how reflective practice is used by a Professional Body to ensure continued professional development

Reflection is an essential attribute for the development of autonomous, critical and advanced practitioners. It is the ability to examine one’s actions and experiences in order to enhance individual clinical knowledge and nursing practice. Reflection is a professional motivator to “move on and do better with one’s practice”, with the common goal of learning from one’s experiences and examining oneself (Caldwell & Grobbel, 2013). According to Chong (2009), “reflective practice should be a continuous cycle in which experience and reflection on experiences are inter-related”.

There are a number of approaches to reflective practice. This is to ensure that learning practices are fully evaluated and not just based on thinking alone. These practices include:

Reflective practice is used in nursing to improve practice. This is done through a self-examination of work done in the past .consciously analysing the decisions taken in the course of one’s practice. It also involves an analysis of the individuals thought processes during and after the clinical event. Relating them to theories and concepts with a view to modifying decisions, behaviour, learning needs, treatments and actions in the future.

More and more I find myself reflecting as I’m teaching and adapting my teaching as the session progresses to meet the needs of individuals who have brought their own view to the session and presented me with an additional way of looking at the subject matter or prompted me to use an example which I had previously dismissed or forgotten about.

Reflection means deliberately taking time to review the happenings of a certain matter and processing how that matter was handled, how it could have been better handled, and how it should be handled in the event that it happens again. This is a practice that I have made a part of my daily life. I reflect over my day on my twenty minute drive home. It allows me to process my day with a critical eye. Often, I feel that I could have handled things differently. There are also days that I feel that I have handled situations remarkably, and I am proud of myself. By critiquing my behaviors and the occurrences that have happened throughout the day, I am able to learn the areas in which I need to grow.

What is reflective Practice? Reflective practice is when you reflect on what you have done to see how it has worked or improved your teaching practice. The reflection practice is very important to the instructional practice and helps the student teachers to develop responsive practice. Reflective practice is part of the teaching professions standards for teacher education programs.

Reflective practices are beneficial. In this class, having the chance to reflect on the draft assignment, in conjunction with having Errol’s comments, allowed me to critically think about my writing skills. The professor comments pointed out my writing and grammar flaws. In turn, the professor’s comments helped me to see what I was doing wrong as well as right, when it came to my writing skills and the assignment. Having the chance to reflect on my mistakes, in combination of having Errol’s comments and instructions, I believed assisted my writing. Therefore, from reflection, I am 1) learning from my mistakes and 2) developing a better understanding of the things that I do

The importance of reflective practice in continuously improving the quality of service provided are :-

The GTCNI have argued that, “Professional knowledge, by its very nature, is organic and, to an extent, evolutionary, reflecting a synthesis of research, experiences gained and expertise shared” (GTCNI, 2007:10). The GTNCI further reinforces this statement when it states that, “Teaching can never be reduced to a set of discrete skills to be mastered in some mechanical process of assimilation” (GTCNI, 2007:5). Teaching today has moved beyond the outdated view that the most important thing for a teacher was solely to have professional knowledge. Professional knowledge encompasses a range of different forms of knowledge such as knowledge on the curriculum and children and pedagogical knowledge e.g. how to manage a classroom amongst many other forms. Whilst this is still of great importance professional knowledge is of no use if you are not able to adapt this knowledge to meet the ever-changing dynamic situations that you will encounter in the classroom. There is a usual but important cliché for a teacher´s career: a teacher has to be a life-long learner to be an effective teacher. Research on effective teaching over the past two decades has proved that effective practice is related to questioning, reflection and continuous professional development. Reflective practice can be a satisfying experience for a teacher evolution.
