In the novel Dr.jekyll and Mr.Hyde By Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr.Jekyll is a gifted doctor who discovered a potent which can separate his good side from his bad side. After taking the potent Dr. Jekyll starts acting weird. Later on Mr.Utterson, a lawyer investigates what is happening to his friend, Dr.Jekyll. While Mr.Utterson is investigating Dr. Jekyll. In this book, evil won by showing the pure evil of Mr.Hyde and Dr.Jekyll turning randomly into Mr.Hyde without taking the potent. In the book, there was a struggle between good and evil, and in that struggle, evil won. Mr.Hyde was pure evil, here are some examples of him showings his cruelty. According to page. 6 “All at once, I saw two figures: one a little man who was stumping along eastward …show more content…
Well, sir, the two ran into one another naturally enough at the corner; and then came the horrible part of the thing; for the man trampled calmly over the child’s body and left her screaming on the ground.” This shows pure evil because nobody tramples over a little girl and leaves her crying. Mr.Hyde just walked away like nothing happened, it is like he doesn't care about the little girl that he hurt. This shows evil is winning over good because a good person would help the little girl but hide it was like swatting a fly from his shoulder. Here is another one of Mr.Hyde’s act of pure evil on page. 27. “And then all of a sudden he broke out in a great flame of anger, stamping with his foot, brandishing the cane, and carrying on (as the maid described it) like a madman. The old gentleman took a step back, with the air of one very much surprised and a trifle hurt; and at that Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth. And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling …show more content…
On pg. 83 it states,”Yes, I had gone to bed Henry Jekyll, I had awakened Edward Hyde.” This shows that without taking the potent Dr.Jekyll had turned into Mr.Hyde. So this means his evil side took over him randomly without any reason. His evil side won over his good side in his sleep without taking the one thing which would change him into Hyde. This is showing that his bad side is slowly taking over him by changing into Hyde whenever it wants to . Another example is on page. 89 “ It was a fine, clear, January day, wet underfoot where the frost had melted, but cloudless overhead; and the Regent’s Park was full of winter chirrupings and sweet with spring odors. I sat in the sun on a bench; the animal within me licking the chops of memory; the spiritual side a little, drowsed, promising subsequent penitence, but not yet moved to begin. And at the very moment of that vainglorious thought, a qualm came over me, horrid nausea and the most deadly shuddering. These passed away, and left me faint; and then as in its turn the faintness subsided, I began to be aware of a change in the temper of my thoughts, a greater boldness, a contempt of danger, a solution of the bonds of obligation. I looked down; my clothes hung formlessly on my shrunken limbs; the hand that lay on my knee was corded and hairy. I was once more Edward Hyde” This quote is saying they now at
Good and Evil in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Mr Hyde is introduced surprisingly to the reader because of his iniquitous action performed on the little girl and this is very different from the way in which Mr Enfield and Mr Utterson are introduced. Mr Utterson and Enfield are introduced to be sincere gentlemen shown to have prestige in the society as Mr Utterson has a respected job of a lawyer and Mr Enfield is the ‘well known man about town’ whereas Mr Hyde is instantly portrayed as sadistic, merciless and ferocious. Mr Hyde “trampled over the child’s body and left her screaming on the ground” therefore this ensures that the reader’s response to Hyde is negative because only a malevolent person would do this despite being mature. The fact that he trampled over the little girl without any reason suggests that he may attain pleasure from doing such hideous activities which would give Mr Hyde an image of being sadistic
In the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson provides insight into the inner workings of the duality that exists within humans. Dr. Jekyll is a well-respected doctor in his community while his differing personality Mr. Hyde is hideous and considered by the public as evil based on appearance. As the novel progresses Dr. Lanyon begins to investigate Mr. Hyde, he begins to realize similarities between both Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll such as their handwriting which results in the discovery that they are the same person. Dr. Jekyll is able to transform himself into Mr. Hyde by drinking a serum he has created which was intended to purify his good. Stevenson stresses the duality of good and evil that exists
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the play Trifles are similar and different in their acts of violent behavior. In both genres the man and woman took a life, killed a person and had no regret. However, in the late nineteenth century in London, England Dr. Henry Jekyll dark side is kept under control. The dark half of him has a vicious appetite to do evil. There is no love lost between Jekyll and Hyde. Edward Hyde enjoys the tasteful lust of violence. His barbaric cold expression is noted by Mr. Utterson. The first impression Mr. Utterson got from Hyde, Hyde’s a friend to Satan. In spite of Dr. Jekyll honorable personality, fear grips Mr. Utterson mind. Mr. Hyde dwarfish appearance and bold displeasing smile is cause enough for Mr. Utterson to fear for Jekyll safety and involvement with such an evil man.
In the novel evil is portrayed by Mr. Hyde and as the novel progresses evil begins to gain more power over good, Mr. Hyde begins to take over Dr. Jekyll and becomes more dominant. Jekyll is beginning to lose control and his evil side is taking over:
“All human beings are commingled out of good and evil.” Robert Louis Stevenson was no fool when it came to understanding the duality of human nature evident within mankind. In his novella, the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson is able to explore his interests concerning the dark, hidden desires that all human beings are guilty of possessing. In his story, a well-respected professional by the name of Dr. Jekyll experiments with the idea of contrasting personalities and successfully undergoes a physical separation of such identities—one which would soon wreak havoc upon his very existence. As a result of his success, Edward Hyde is born. Hyde, characterized as a miniscule and terrifying, apelike figure from the start,
In the novel “The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde” there is a theme of good vs evil. [He] seemed to listen with an ill-contained impatience. And then all of a sudden he broke out in a great flame of anger, stamping with his foot, brandishing the cane, and carrying on (as the maid described it) like a madman. The old gentleman took a step back, with the air of one very much surprised and a trifle hurt; and at that Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth. And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway. To what extent does the novella The strange case Of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde explore the notion that human nature is comprised both of good and evil, and how does the imagery support this theory? This essay will confront the issue of good and evil, and its usage and theories throughout the book "The strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde". The story is based around Mr.Utterson's, a longtime friend of Dr.Jekyll, search for the truth and the connection between Jekyll and Hyde, ending in the realization that they are actually the same person. The story centers around the idea that there is a struggle between people's good and evil sides, it merely depends on which you nurture more. There is also this idea that one side of you will
In the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde it is regarded that these identities are two different persons but this is not the case, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are one in the same. There is much confusion when reading this literary work by Robert Louis Stevenson; this piece is regarded as horrific and disturbing in many ways. But the biggest twist is when it is reveled to the reader that these two people are the same and that below the surface of Dr.Jekyll is an evil man who enjoys committing evil acts. Mainly that Dr. Jekyll believes he has no choice but to commit these horrid acts because he has no control over is evil side. I don’t believe this is the case, Hyde isn’t a real person and doesn’t exist, nor is he someone who commits
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. The novel is set in Victorian England and follows a man by the name Dr. Jekyll, a respected doctor. Dr. Jekyll is a revered man in society and has every intention of remaining that way. However, one day he goes too far with one of his experiments and he creates a draught that unleashes a split personality within him. This personality goes by the name of Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll does not seek a cure at first because he enjoys having an outlet for all of his desires that are deemed unacceptable by society. Hyde commits evil deeds, such as murdering an old man and trampling a young girl, which Dr. Jekyll could never normally let himself go through with. Dr. Jekyll believes that he can remain a good, reputable man even when a part of him is doing wrong. However, he soon learns that this is impossible. Soon after, Dr. Jekyll loses control over his ability to transform into Mr. Hyde. At first, he would only change during the night. Then, he started transforming during the day as well. Dr. Jekyll finally admits that the problem is starting to get out of control. However, he cannot create a remedy any longer. Dr. Jekyll is eventually completely overtaken by Mr. Hyde and the reader does not hear from him again. In this novel, Dr. Jekyll illustrates the duality of human nature through his struggle to choose between good versus evil, societal expectations versus unacceptable desires, and
In each of us there are two people; one we show to the world, and one that we keep private and show only to our friends. This is a natural part of being human, something that exists in all of us. This is also the case in Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, as demonstrated by Dr. Jekyll himself. Jekyll is a well to do doctor who is widely viewed as a respectable person. Outwardly, he presents as though he has no dark secrets. However, we learn at the end of the book that this is not the case. In fact, Jekyll has so much darkness in him that he feels the need to create a potion to escape from them. Thus, Mr. Edward Hyde is born. Hyde is the complete opposite of Jekyll, a being of pure evil who has nothing except bad intentions. The rest of the book presents us the struggle of Jekyll and Hyde, good versus evil. However, unlike the stories we were told when we were young, evil wins. Mr. Hyde takes over Dr. Jekyll, contaminating him to the point where Jekyll can no longer control Hyde. Hyde comes out whenever Jekyll lets his guard down, and continues upon his evil way until the death of Dr. Jekyll, and Mr. Hyde with him. We see that evil wins, that Dr. Jekyll is unable to suppress his evil side. This book gives us a great example as to what happens when we let our evil selves run wild. Because no matter how hard we try, evil will win.
Hyde’s violent act is an important essence of the book and Hyde is the representation of the failure to control the evil in human nature. As Dr. Jekyll quotes, “If I had lost my identity beyond redemption and must flee before daylight from a house that was no longer mine;” (Stevenson 52) Dr. Jekyll talks about the firs time he turned to Hyde, here and says that he lost his identity beyond redemption. This shows that Hyde completely took over Jekyll and Hyde was overall, more dominant than Jekyll. Hyde is described as pure evil and the evil side of Jekyll, which completely took over him when Jekyll drank the elixir. He also says that he must “flee before daylight from a house that was no longer mine.” In here he is saying that since Hyde completely took over Jekyll’s body, the house he owned is now Hyde’s property. This shows how Jekyll failed to control his human nature within himself. “Evil, I fear, founded evil was sure to come of that connection. Ay truly, I believe you; I believe poor Harry is killed; and I believe his murderer.” (Stevenson 36) In this quote Mr.Utterson is talking about the ploy where Hyde kills Harry and is portrayed as evil. In here Hyde’s evil is proven by the violence behind the murder. This shows that Hyde’s evil nature is shown through his violence towards others, therefore the scene starts out with Hyde killing Harry with his cane. Also by showing this,
“The battle line between good and evil runs through the heart of every man.” (Solzhenitsyn) In the story “Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr.Jekyll has this battle of good and evil within himself. He has the idea to separate his evil half known as Mr. Hyde with a potion. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde focuses on duality of man and human nature. Stevenson develops the theme of good and evil throughout the story using the setting, characters, and the city of London.
first introduction to Hyde is far from pleasant. The man “trampled calmly over the child’s body and left her screaming on the ground” (Stevenson 7). Already characterized as a depraved human being because of his actions, it’s obvious that the one narrating this event, Mr. Enfield, and all those who witnessed the scene absolutely loathe him. Even the doctor turned “sick and white with the desire to kill him”. Stevenson has revealed to readers Hyde’s cruel nature. His reaction to the whole ordeal, “carrying it off, sir, really like Satan”, only further demonstrates his depravity and disregard for the lives of others. The biblical allusion implies that Hyde’s nature is comparable to that of the Devil himself. His physical appearance is no more appealing to other characters, “something displeasing, something downright detestable” (Stevenson ). Stevenson depicts him as giving off a “strong feeling of deformity”, however, there is no specific outward malformations that illustrates this. The characterization implies how hideous crimes make hideous appearances, and is symbolic of how actions taken by a person drastically affect how they a viewed by society. Stevenson once again demonstrates this upon further reading, in which he provides a more detailed description of Hyde, for “he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he
