Who are the Mormons? The Mormons are a religious group, who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint. The Mormons were founded on April 6, 1830 by Joseph Smith, in Fayette, New York. In 1852, polygamy was made legal. Polygamy is when a male marries multiple women and they all live in one house. The male must be able to support all their children and his wives. Joseph Smith had many of wifes. The youngest wife Joseph Smith had married was a 14-year-old girl named Helen Mar Kimball. The Mormons moved west because they wanted to escape religious discrimination. After the murder of their leader, Joseph Smith, they knew that they had to get out of their old settlement in Illinois.
