Over the years, women in Hollywood have endured sexist work environments, lack of character roles in front of the camera and wage inequality. The representation of women in early Hollywood cinema during the 1940s and 1960s were more dependent on the notion of ‘The Male-Gaze’. Women were represented as sex objects and an illusion and desire for men, by e.g. idealizing female bodies. Still in contemporary world, women are facing similar injustices. The conversation about how women are treated in Hollywood is amidst the key concerns on feminist issues, addressed by presidential candidates like Hilary Clinton and Carly Fiorina in America, and as well by the author Sheryl Sandberg’s ‘’Lean In’’ Campaign.
In this dissertation, I will attempt to examine the impact of feminism movement on Hollywood cinema. The paper will consider the representation of women in Hollywood, starting with the chronological order from classic representation of women to the modern female roles today. I will be taking films prior to feminism movement and films during the feminism movement and how the representation of women was altered. For this argumentation, I will be analyzing the film Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and The State of Film and Media Feminism (Kuhn, 2004), where Annette Kuhn argues that the women in cinema were crafted according to the male desires. Then I will proceed to discuss about films that were made from a woman’s point of view, rather than the way a man might perceive or see a woman.
