Year 11 Modern History: Republican/Loyalist Murals Source Analysis
Republican Murals:
Mural Dedicated to IRA Volunteers
Located in Ballymurphy, West Belfast, this unnamed Republican mural was created as a memorial for IRA volunteers Bobby McCruden who was shot by the army during the gun battle in Ardoyne in 1972, Pearse Jordan who was also shot by an RUC unit in 1992 and Mundo O’Rawe who was killed in 1973 off the Falls. All major historical references on this mural relate to the presented IRA members to remember the volunteers and their brave actions and deaths for the IRA and Ireland. This is clear through the English text written on the right side of the mural (fig 1) which states ‘Dedicated to Vols, Bobby Mc Crudden, Mundo O’Rawe and

This is because the main purpose they were created was for mostly propaganda. Most murals associated with republican and loyalist groups focus on proving a point to either support them or to discourage the other party. This serves as the primary use of a mural because murals are highly visible to the public and to other members of both groups making them effective propaganda. Murals are considered as reliable sources of primary evidence but the propaganda associated with them can heavily decrease their credibility. An example of propaganda presented on a mural is figure 3 which directly blames Great Britain for causing The Great Famine. This mural is clearly biased because it completely blames Great Britain and does not focus on any other reasoning or sides of the event such as Ireland’s involvement with the event. Another reason murals are not clear historical evidence is because the presentation of the information would be altered to either convince or to appeal to a specific audience. An example of this is fig 5 which is a mural depicting King William III in a heroic pose during the Battle of the Boyne. This figure is propaganda because anyone who views this mural without prior historical knowledge of the figure would consider him to be a heroic king or war hero. To many protestants, William III was a brutal king who killed many people for his beliefs and religion. Since this mural only depicts King William III as a hero, it does not give any other information about his cruel actions thus making this mural a loyalist
Similar material painted around this time in 1817 was John Trumbull's oil canvas “Declaration of Independence,” located in the United States Capitol Rotunda. ii Gilbert Stuart was a renowned artist who was known for capturing the inner character, which he believed was reflected in their physical features. He believed Washington features indicated a man with great passion.i The George Washington portrait brought Gilbert Stuart fame. This period in time a person like George Washington would give the artist more sitters.iii In addition, reproducing this portrait gave Stuart more money, either painting it with his own two hands or having
After the American states drafted the Constitution, there were conflicting ideas concerning how the states should be governed. Some believed that a strong federal government should wield most of the governing powers, but there was another group that opposed a strong federal government. This group, known as the Republicans, believed that the majority of governing powers should reside in state legislatures. Republicans felt that the powers of the federal government should be limited, and the Republicans believed that the Constitution supported this idea.
A primary objective in measuring productivity is to improve operations either by using fewer inputs to produce the same output, or to produce:
In 1854, the Republican Party was established as a response to controversial issues within the United States of America. The founders of this political party ‒ anti-slavery Whigs, former Democrats, former members of the Free Soil Party and Know-Nothing Party ‒ helped to identify their ideals prior to the Civil War.
Painters were not interested in making a picture realistic-they did not use perspective. The more important figures in the painting were frequently made larger than all the others, and often the element of landscape was omitted completely. Members of the Holy Family for example, would be painted against a background of shining gold, which signified the heavens.
My favorite era is the Contemporary Era. In history, the Contemporary Era is a time that had profound changes the modernized the identity of the development of many new cities. In the early modern era, people and cities grew through the spirit of modernism throughout all over the world. People were going away with cultural traditions and starting a new civilization future for the twentieth century. The founding on new discoveries cause new foundation trends to be expressed with a new understanding in believing and living.
The painting depicts one of the most decisive victories of the American Revolution. Prior to the battle American morale was very low, even Washington was becoming doubtful. The continental army was forced out of New York and pushed across most of New Jersey on a desperate retreat induced by many British victories. The British troops that occupied the small town of Trenton were convinced that American morale was much too broken for any sort of attack… Washington had other plans. (Encyclopedia Brittanica)
The creation of murals or any art, for that matter, was in rapid decline. Mexican's at this time were abandoning most of their earlier values, as they were increasingly drawn into the struggle of assimilation, Americanization, and modernization, at all costs. The Mexican community was entrenched in a repressive Anglo-dominated society. It was out of this oppression that the dawn of new revolution was taking shape and bringing with it a resurgence of Mexican art as it transformed to define the identity of Mexican Americans as Chicano.
By the end of the Civil War, the United States was broken, yet intact. The North had prevailed, and what was to be done with the former Confederate States was in question. After the Congressional Election of 1866, radical Republicans gained a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress, which meant that they had the ability to override a veto from President Andrew Johnson. This meant that virtually any law Congress passed would be put into action, so therefore the Republicans dictated the plan for Reconstruction. On March 2, 1867, Congress passed the Reconstruction Act, which split the South into five military districts, established the conditions for readmittance of the former states, disfranchised many former Confederates, and required
The Democratic convention for the Election of 1860 was held from April 23rd to May 3rd at Charleston, South Carolina. During this convention there was a disagreement over the slavery policy, so some of the Southern delegates withdrew from the ballot. The party wasn’t able to nominate a candidate at this convention, therefore they held a second convention from June 18th to June 23rd in Baltimore, Maryland. At this second convention, the party nominated Stephen Arnold Douglas as president with Herschel Johnson as his vice president after they defeated John Breckinridge. Soon after, conflict arose so a large number of mostly Southern Democrats nominated John Cabell Breckinridge as their presidential candidate with Joseph Lane as his vice president. Douglas and Breckinridge ended up becoming the candidates for the Democratic party during the election.
Confederate symbols are symbols like monuments or flags that show people who were Confederate army heros or just the flag to show that they think that the Confederacy should have won. Confederate symbols represent white supremacy and Hate for people who are people too. The people most of the monuments are made for were white supremacists and they believed that so strongly they went to war for it. These people were unjust and they thought one race was superior; which it is not. These statues stand for things that most people in our country do not believe. To learn more about this topic I read an article about Confederate monuments. In the article “Are Confederate Monuments our Heritage or Symbols of Hate?” from Newsweek, it says, “For many
The Republican Party came from GOP (abbreviation for Grand Old Party) and is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. The Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists and modernists in 1854, and the first president was Abraham Lincoln, who served from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. The Republicans dominated politics nationally and in the majority of northern States for most of the period between 1860 and 1932. There have been 18 Republican presidents, and the most recent being George W. Bush, who served from 2001 to 2009. [1]
is a clear, statement of the issues of the 1964 presidential campaign, including the hidden issues within the Republican Party. It gives a inside of the Republican National Conventions since 1936. It answers such questions as, Who, really picks your presidential candidates? How are political conventions stolen? Who are the secret kingmakers? How do hidden persuaders and propaganda gimmicks change politics? This book is about a lady called Phyliss Scallaf and it is about how she worked with congress and political places, and how she found out all the secrets of the libreals . While not be biased to the conservatives, it makes you have a whole different look on how our government is really working.
The historical background of the place itself of the painting is that Washington Square which was known as the Potter’s Field. It used to be an execution grounds and a cemetery in the early 1800s for many slaveries including a young female slave Rose Butler who was executed in the Potter’s Field. However, the cemetery has evolved to become a parade and drill ground for the soldiers for the Seventh Regiment. Washington Square became a historical place because of the many evolutions that it had went through in the United States.
I will be doing a creative project about political art with the intention of creating a portfolio which will capture the current state of American politics. I chose this topic because throughout the presidential election, I observed the way candidates and their supporters used visual images to to support their causes. When I participated in the Women’s March On Washington, I was blown away by the creative, funny, and powerful signs I saw. Throughout this year, I found that the one thing almost everyone in my life agrees on is that it was the we are living in an extremely polarized country and time. I want to take senior exploration as an opportunity to convey this intense political climate. I chose to use art, as opposed to writing or music, because I really enjoy it and do not think I will have the opportunity to do much art after high school.
