After conducting research on all three artist I have decided to look more deeply into Cynthia Sherman, better known as Cindy. My decision on Cindy came very easily to me because I love art through photography. Cindy was born last into a five children house hold to her mother and father. She was born in New Jersey but shortly after birth the family moved to Road Island where Cindy was raised. While at Buffalo State College Cindy began painting but quickly found she was limited. She was unable to come up with her own style and that frustrated her. She then put down the paint brushes and picked up a camera. Cindy found she could quickly capture the art that was around her. Cindy was known for taking snapshots of herself. Many of times she took
I have chosen Sally Mann as my artist as she is an extraordinary photographer that went against the grain to create something completely different. She has a strange way of making outstanding, personal imagery. She inspires my own work because of her ability to see things others would not.

Lucille Ball was a beloved comedian/actress who opened and expanded opportunities for the profession of female comedians. Throughout Ball’s career, she was able to shape an industry allowing females to participate in a career of comedy that mostly males dominated. Lucille Ball is known as the First Lady of comedy. An influential person who has either a positive or negative effect on people is someone who grabs attention and who impacts people. Lucille Ball was certainly a positive influential person.
On July 13, 2015, Sandra Bland committed suicide in Waller County Jail in Hempstead, Texas. Bland was an African-American, and was subject to police brutality. A few days before her death, the police placed Bland in jail as a result of traffic confrontation that did escalate to violence. Her incident with the police is a prime example of the racism that goes on today. Though policies were passed to combat acts of prejudice against blacks, there is always an underlying hatred towards African-Americans that continues to manifest itself. This is because racism in its social has not been as combated, which causes people to continue to live in a continuing era of white supremacy. The better-treatment of white people, causes black people to live
The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement Rosa Parks is one of the most famous people in the history of the American Civil Rights movement, for her refusal to “move to the back of the bus” on December 1, 1955. Although her moment of protest was not a planned event , it certainly proved to be a momentous one. The nature of Rosa Park’s protest, the response of the authorities of Montgomery, the tactics adopted by the civil rights leaders in Montgomery, and the role eventually played by Federal authority, were all aspects of this particular situation that were to be repeated again and again in the struggle for equality of race. Rosa Parks’ action, and the complex combination of events that followed, in some measure, foreshadowed a great deal of
Josephine Baker is a well know African American because of her being an french resident agent. She also was entertainer and activist.
You can never envision the world without Emma Goldman. Emma Goldman passed on May 14, 1940. Emma committed her life to the production of a fundamentally social request. Likewise, she grasped insurgency for its vision; and it offered freedom, concordance, and social equity. Political agitation, in spite of the fact that its foundations are dated considerably before, was conceived only two years after Emma's introduction to the world. Bakunin, a Russia progressive, as Emma was to wind up, split the worldwide socialist development in two, making revolutionaries. She had a profound duty to supreme opportunity and that drove her to embrace a scope of disputable causes. Goldman was a radical scholar. Forty years on she is more than meaningful, she is notorious. The majority of this began with her introduction to the world on June 27, 1869, in Kovno, Lithuania.
There is perhaps no whistleblower in the United States more well-known than Chelsea Manning. A hero to some, her leaks have been credited as being a catalyst for the Arab Spring, exposing the support of the US government for corrupt dictators all throughout the Middle East. She is also credited for exposing the misdeeds of the US military in its campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. She also has a large number of detractors, many of whom claim her leaks endangered the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States. Some go so far as to call her a traitor – an allegation so serious that there have been calls for Manning to be executed.
Terror and mockery come together in the portraits of Cindy Sherman on display at the Crocker Art Museum. Walking into the large, dimly lit ballroom, one may begin to feel a slight sense of trepidation as the viewer looks around to find nine sets of beady eyes watching one’s every move. Sherman produced her History Portraits during the late eighties and early nineties, nine of which are displayed at the museum. In her portraits she uses lush fabrics, lavish jewelry, and false body parts to decorate herself in these self-portraits. Her portraits have been know to cause discomfort in the viewers who find the general stereotypes, depicted in her portraits, amusing, yet confusing and terrorizing.
Mary Cassatt is known world-wide for her impressing art in which she focuses mainly in the everyday life of women and children. She is an American artist born in Pennsylvania on May 22, 1844, but later relocates to Europe in 1866 to pursue to work in art. This was mainly due to her family’s and society’s objections to women in the field of art. There she met and befriended famous Impressionist Edgar Degas. Because of her close friendship with Degas, she grew courage to continue to do art in her own way. She continued to paint until she slowly began to lose her eyesight and later died in 1926. Cassatt was part of the Impressionist style movement, in which she painted portraits unlike many others who painted landscapes (biography.com). Her artwork
The similarities between Rembrandt van Rijn and Cindy Sherman is that they both are passionate artist. They see life their own way. They both use self-portraits to document their life. Other similar is that they both used physical appearance to express what was going on inside like their feelings and moods.
Grew up on the Southside of Chicago, earned degrees from Princeton and Harvard Law School, married the man she loved, became the first black woman to be the First Lady of the United States, improved civil rights for people of color, and changed the face of feminism; these are some, but most certainly not all, of the accomplishments of the same woman, Michelle Obama. She is overall an inspiring woman to so many people that have had to struggle in life. She has done everything in her power to help those people lead a life of justice and equality that they otherwise, had been prevented from doing. Michelle Obama has achieved things most others with her upbringing could only dream of. She used her achievements to give those people a better chance. Michelle Obama has become an extremely important figure in America because of her inspiring advocacy for women, girls, and people of color, and she was doing this far before she became the first lady of the United States.
No other artist has ever made as extended or complex career of presenting herself to the camera as has Cindy Sherman. Yet, while all of her photographs are taken of Cindy Sherman, it is impossible to class call her works self-portraits. She has transformed and staged herself into as unnamed actresses in undefined B movies, make-believe television characters, pretend porn stars, undifferentiated young women in ambivalent emotional states, fashion mannequins, monsters form fairly tales and those which she has created, bodies with deformities, and numbers of grotesqueries. Her work as been praised and embraced by both feminist political groups and apolitical mainstream art. Essentially, Sherman's photography is part of the culture and
