Influential Person Essay Lucille Ball was a beloved comedian/actress who opened and expanded opportunities for the profession of female comedians. Throughout Ball’s career, she was able to shape an industry allowing females to participate in a career of comedy that mostly males dominated. Lucille Ball is known as the First Lady of comedy. An influential person who has either a positive or negative effect on people is someone who grabs attention and who impacts people. Lucille Ball was certainly a positive influential person.

She is talked about as, “Lucille Ball is known as the First Lady of comedy.” (Patrie 1). Tons looked up to Ball and saw how much she accomplished for the comedy and acting industry. She is also considered as a, “pioneer of the modern sitcom.” (Johnson 1). Ball was seen as an influential person for the ways in which she was able to introduce new ideas. She and Arnaz even introduced developing the production technique used for the modern sitcom, filming I Love Lucy in segments, with three cameras, before a live audience. When I Love Lucy first aired, many people fell in love with the show admediatly. It had such a big impact that, “In 1953, 67% of American homes tuned in every Monday night to watch the show.” (Gehring 1). For that many to be watching the show, they must have enjoyed all the humor and relationships. Lucille Ball was born on August 6, 1911, in Jamestown, New York, to Henry and Desiree Ball. She also had a younger brother, Fred, who was born four years later in 1915. While Lucille's mother was still pregnant with Fred, her father was struck with typhoid fever and passed away. After her father passed away, her mother eventually remarried to Ed Peterson. Ed, not being a fan of children, decided that he and Desiree would move to Detroit without Lucille’s kids. Fred moved in with Desiree’s parents, and Lucille moved in with Ed’s parents. Lucille recalled her new family being very poor and strict, saying that they didn’t even have enough money for school pencils. Ed’s mother taught her needlework, which is how she ended up loving to crochet for the rest of her life.

The cinematic innovations of the I Love Lucy show made it very popular among producers. Arnaz made the decision to film it, rather than do it live, making it possible to have a high-quality print of each episode available for endless re-broadcasts, as opposed to the poor quality kinescopes of live shows.
