Cleft Lip and Palate A cleft lip is a split in the upper lip, and this split can be on only one side of the lip or on both sides. Cleft lips sometimes happen alone, while other times happen along with a cleft palate. A cleft palate is a split in the hard and/or soft palate. These conditions are often not seen until the baby is born. Because a split in the palate is not always detected right away, these babies will have trouble with feedings and only then will the condition be seen. A cleft lip or palate alone is the most common defect a baby is born with in this country. Surgeons repair the cleft lip/palate, and the child may need to see a speech language pathologist if feeding help is needed or if their speech is affected by the cleft. The reason this birth defect interests me is because I have a younger brother who was born with a cleft lip. He is now fourteen years old and has had two surgeries as a baby plus orthodontic care to help correct the problems caused by the cleft lip.
